This was a building year for the Star- fire Cross Country team, having only one senior on the roster. Considering their lack of experience, the South Adams team ran well all season, even though they won only one meet. In a tough NEIC meet, SA placed 7th. October 8, the date of the Adams County meet, was a bad day for most of the team, but one member sparkled. By all standards the Stars lacked the numbers, heighth, and experience re- quired to have a winning season, but because of their desire, spirit, and willingness to work together, they finished with a 13-8 season record. Although the entire team worked together to compile this record, two boys deserve special recognition. The wrestling team this year, capably coached by Mr. Benton, compiled a 4-8 record. The team competed in two townships and the sectional. In the Manchester Invitational Tournament, Gregg Werst took second in the heavyweight division. Randy Winteregg took third in the 112 pound class, Ed Liechty took fourth in the 133 pound class, and Ron Hirschy placed 4th in the 154 pound class. In the NEIC tourney Ron Branstetter and Gary Liechty placed 4th in their respective weight classes. Steve Ford took 2nd place in the 95 pound class, and Gregg Werst was the NEIC HW champion. On the surface, the Kirby Warren coached track team appeared to have an imsuccessM season. Although the Stats didn ' t win very many track meets, they did gain much experience. In this respect, the season was a success. The track boys placed well in almost every event, but lacked the depth to run up a large number of points. Russ Hueckiger, the only senior on the team, contributed a great deal in both points and morale. Losing only one senior, the track team should be a threat with 10 to 12 lettermen returning. The team will look to Ed Liechty and Mike Van Emon, the two high point men, for future leadership. 86 Coach Warren with senior track member Russ Flueckiger. Baseball TOP ROW: Asst. This year ' s spring baseball team finished the season with a 3-6 conference record, but don ' t let the record fool you. The Harry Anderson coached Starfires were always tough opponents and usually led most of the way, only to get a bad break in the last inning or two. The Stars should be a real threat in the years to come since they will lose only three seniors. 87 Tennis BACK ROW: Bob Stauffer, Chester Richwine, Mike Gulp, Tim Lehman, Kent Stuckey. The 1969 spring tennis team, under the leadership of Miss Norma Jones, compiled a 4-6 season record. Although this is not a spectacular record, the Starfires were never out of any of their matches, and gained much valuable experience. The future golf teams should be very strong since they are losing only one senior, Kim Watson. After the movie a buffet style luncheon was served. A southern mansion, a plantation garden, roses, magnolias, poppies, and Spanish moss graced the setting for the dance, with music provided by a live combo, that added the final touch to a wonderful evening. 145 Graduation i-iit ' M wSf KMmu fl B ' nf RSj ■vn HSp r . -f Wfr t J ja U i (46 :.| 1 I w « The Pathway You stand so tall on the crest of the hill Looking down at the valley, peaceful and still; Tracing the pathway of your ascent, Feeling the joy of accomplishment; Recalling the friends you met on the way As onward you journeyed with each new day. Then lifting your gaze from this happy sight You look up to a mountain bathed in light And feel the urge to go forward and seek Another pathway to reach that peak.
