'Here on the dust of countless ages past The roaring river's at my feet, I standp The sun, the moon, the stars, the sky- This moment is my life. I am a part of all the universe. All past is but a memory- HI am tomorrowg dust. The future' therefore' is only hope' Here on the dust of countless ages past 'Amid the towering peaks so cold, I stand: Serene and high This moment is my life. Life is Eternal. -5. R. Geneva High School-Berne High School. They are made up of adminis- trators, teachers, students, office workers, ianitors people. They are made up of the band- rooms, the prefabs, the shops, the main buildings, the football fields, the baseball diamonds . . . places. They are made up of studies, dances, meetings, games, examinations . . . things. People, places, and things . . . a familiar combination in any school. But we here at South Adams feel that our people, places, and things are pretty special. We are proud to say, These are our schools. We think of the people of our school. People were a great part of our education. We worked with each other, we competed with each other, we planned with each other. Co-operation was the keyword for getting things done, and get things done we did. And each accomplishment added a little bit more to the prestige of our schools. Yes, we learned to get along with the other fella. We think of the places off our school. The white beauty of the yards in the winter, the lime green of spring, the velvet green of summer, and the rich brown of autumn. The football fields bring happy thoughts of sunny afternoons, chilly evenings, cold drinks and hot coffee, friendly people, and the excitement of seeing the Cardinals and the Bears in action. We remember the band- rooms and the sounds echoing from them. The noisy rehearsals, contests, and Pops Concerts can still be remembered by those of us who attended. Things there were many. Basically we came to school to get an education. Reading, writing and arithmetic soon gave way to Shakespeare, themes, and trigonometry. We studied hard, know- ing that getting and education would be no simple task. The athletic events taught us . . . as well as the players . . . good sportsmanship. We took losses calmly, and wins . . . well, not so calmly. We learned even while we were having fun. Planning social events was a thrilling challenge, but what fun it was stringing crepe paper, sprinkling glitter, and selling tickets. Another thing accomplished, another thing well done, another thing for us to smile about and say, These are our schools. mba., og A --I7 I-lrglvQclwolz... .. 24 eww!-lrglveclwolz... . 142 ws Aw tw A ,f 5, M' 1 Ba , ,, 1' ' .ef 1' .1 E' ' ' M yu!! .mfif ormal ents Tests fl f X' Singing? We hope the knowledge gained in your high school work will inspire you to seek further knowledge that you might prepare yourselves for the solution of the many problems facing your community, your state, your na- tion, and the world. Those of you who have taken part in the extracurricular activities of your school, such as the edition of this yearbook, have already shown a willing- ness to assume responsibilities beyond your regular requirements. It is this willingness to do a little more than is required of you in your school today which will surely make you the leaders in your community tomorrow. With best wishes for a successful future, Sincerely yours, Dr. Norman Beaver Fred Fosnaugh Patrick Murphy Leslie B. Lehman Corwin Newcomer .,.,-v S I8 Clawvj. During our freshman year, we made two trips to Fort Wayne-to the coli- seum to see Holiday on Ice and to the Clyde Theater to see My Six Loves. Our spon- sor was Mr. William Kipfer. Our sophomore year was highlighted by the addition of many new students from Hartford Township. We started the year by electing the following four girls to lead us: Kathy Lehman, President, Margie McGough, Vice-President, Sally Minton, Secretary, and Julia Hodgin, Treasurer. Our only class party was a hockey game at the coliseum in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Alice Rhoades sponsored our class. During our iunior year, we had several money-making proiects. We were responsible for selling pop and popcorn at the home ball games and also presented the play Father Knows Best. Our officers for that year were Ron Mosser, President, John Stahly, Vice-President, Kathy Lehman, Secretary, and Julia Hodgin, Treasurer. As juniors, we had a rollerskating party at Celina and also viewed Holiday on Ice at Fort Wayne. Mrs. Lavaun Muth and Mr. Francis Wellman served as our sponsors. For our final year we chose Ron Mosser as our President, John Stahly, Vice-President, Kathy Lehman, Sec- retary, and Julia Hodgin, Treasurer. Our highlights of the year included a picnic at Affolder Park. In the spring, we travelled to Ball State University to see the opera, The Rigoletto. Previous to viewing this musical comedy, we enioyed a very delicious meal at the Rustic Cabin near Muncie. Our final class party was held at the Dutch Mill in Bluffton. Everyone was filled to capacity with a very tasty family-style dinner. Mrs. Lavaun Muth and Mr. Francis Wellman again sponsored us as seniors. On May 23, our night of graduation, we said Good-by to Geneva High School and each of us began to tread a different path in life. We all have many pleasant memories of our four short years at Geneva High. MAL BANTA He's not lazy, he's iust in love with rest. ALAN BAUMAN To work and own a car, beats having none by far. They have shown steady improvement over the past six years. On September 2, the Cardinals defeated the Berne Bears for the first time in five years. Q Football I-lv-Litas This year, Geneva High School cele- brated its one and only FOOTBALL HI- LITES. The festivities started on Friday night, October 'l5, with a bonfire rally and the crowning of the Sweetheart and her attendants. On Saturday, preceding the football game a parade composed of the Sweetheart and her attendants, the football players, the band, and several cars brightly decorated and occupied by members ofthe high school and the cheer- leaders made their way through town, and arrived at the football field. Although we lost the game, our spirits were soothed by a delicious supper in the school cafe- teria, followed by a record hop in the X gfifu --23, N C fart at ,- 431' 'tea 57? A ff . But, in the player's life, basketball means even more than that. It means long hours of tiresome practice, high hopes and sometimes the lonely feeling of defeat as well as victory. To other students, and to teachers and spectators it means watching and routing for good friends and working to show the best your school has to offer. Our Cardinals worked harcl this past season to com- pile a fine ll and 9 regular season record. An excellent showing in the sectional enabled the team to go to the final game. We elected John Burry as our president, Ernest Steiner, our vice president, Betty Pyle, our secretary, and Linda Reusser, our treasurer. As freshmen, we gave our first class play. The following year our officers were president, Steve Steury, vice president, Mike Spichiger, secretary, Jennifer Wulliman, and treasurer, Sandra Habegger. Proudly we presented the play, Hercules' Night Out. As sophomores many of us took geometry, and thus we too made the annual trip to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. Then feeling very grown up and wise, we took our place as Berne's iuniors. Steve Steury, our presidentg John Burry, our vice president, Sueann Von Gunten, our secretary, and Donna Blum, our treasurer guided us through the year. In March we helped present the musical, Brigadoon. We chose as our reception theme Underwater Paradise. Finally last fall we began our last year at B.H.S.-our senior year! Our officers were Steve Steury, presi- dent, Herman Wulliman, vice president, Sandra Agler, secretary, and Tanya Moser, treasurer. Again we par- ticipated in the chosen musical, Music Man. For our class motto we chose Character is Destiny. Our colors were ivory and moss green, and the yellow rose was our flower. Our- busy senior year came to a close after a beautiful reception given to us by the iuniors and an eventful alumni banquet. The marching band participated in the Bluffton Street Fair parade, Berne and Decatur Halloween parades, the band day at Purdue University, Homecoming, local football games, and at the Woodburn Centennial parade. The stirring music and formations and their strik- ing appearance added much to the season. The symphonic band also presented such programs as the Christmas concert, the Annual Winter Band Concert in February, and the Berne, Bluffton, and Decatur Joint Concert at Decatur. The band also participated in the contests along with the other musical groups. At the end of the year they ended a great season with their stirring performance in the Pop Concert. Much credit is again due to Mr. Gerig for his hard work with the band. As a result of all their rehearsals they very capably participated in four concerts. The first of these was a Rotary concert followed by one at Lions' Club the next evening. Later in the season they sang for a youth conference at the E.U.B. Church and at a Madrigal Festival at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Last of all, they helped make our annual Pops Concert a success by singing several numbers. I-hgh .Y . I L 2 f .5 2 2 5 J - 5 . LA. xt! I . -X ' f 5. it S' -H .Q ' ' if-4 . The Berne High School A Cappella Choir, under the fine direction of Dr. Free- man Burkhalter, has had a very busy year. Because Dr. Burkhalter has a vast knowledge of music and many years of experience, anyone participating inthe choir received the best choral instruction. The Berne, Bluffton, Decatur Joint Concert, a Christmas Concert given on WKJG-TV, and a choir festival participated in at Ball State are only three of the highlights for the year. The A Cappella also participated in the District and State contests in which the choir received first for the twentieth consecutive year. The annual Pops concert closed the door on a very busy season for the A Cappella. In preparation for their appearances, the choir spent about 4V2 hours a week, practicing three mornings and every noon. The success that the A Cappella re- ceived is very much deserved. 4 J' x 1.
