K x re., - . he-evfvf' l f, i Z . e f isforcy of ur SCAOOI On August 24, 1875, Samuel Godshall sold to the town of Souderton a lot which is now the site of the Chestnut Street School. The first school house was a one-room building erected in 1875. The Chestnut Street School was taken over by the borough in 1888 when the first School Board was elected. The first class to graduate from the Souderton High School was the Class of 1894 which consisted of only four members. From that early start to the present, the history of our school is a story of continuous progress, improvement, and development. The greatest step in that progress was taken when in September of 1932 the classes first met in what was then the new building on School Lane. In 1956 a Building Committee was appointed. What was its purpose? Well, since World War II, Souderton showed an immense growth including the five other districts. We had outgrown our present school and a new one was needed. This was the reason for the Building Committee. No- vember 20, 1957, the architect gave the signal and, after the ground breaking ceremony, con- struction began. With eager anticipation, we watched the new building progress through its various stages. On September 13, 1959, the Corner Stone Laying Ceremony was held. It was on the previous Wednesday, September 9, 1959, that the students first entered the school. We, the class of 1961, are proud and honored to be the second class to graduate from this beautiful build- mg. 2, 3 n :x4PPreciafion The supervision of a high school is a pro- foundly complex operation. We of the Souder- ton Area District have been extremely for- tunate to have received the services of Mr. E. Merton Crouthamel, who for the past forty years. has been dedicated to the public service. Mr. Crouthamel's teaching career began as Assistant Principal in the Beccaria Township Schools in 1914 and 1915. During the follow- ing two years. he taught here at Sounderton, and from 1918 to 1919, he spent one year in the United States Army. After his military service was completed, he taught in Butler, Pennsylvania. In 1921, he returned to Souder- ton as Assistant Principal for one yearg and then assumed his present position as Super- vising Principal. succeeding Mr. A. L. Gehman. It was during his term as Supervising Prin- cipal that the Elementary School building at Summit Street was builtg the former High School building was builtg and our present building was erected. Mr. Crouthamel was re- sponsible for many familiar things around the school which today are merely taken for granted. He was responsible for the erection of the fence around the athletic field, the build- ing of the large stands. and the installation of the floodlights. All of these things made the athletic events more enjoyable to watch and participate in. One of his more recent addi- tions to the school was a set of driver training machines to promote better driving habits among the student body. With prudent frugal- ity, he procured more equipment of finer caliber for our new high school with the money ex- pended than many people thought possible. He has undertaken many jobs such as the super- vision of our athletic programs, which now re- quires the service of several people. Mr. Crouthamel has seen the faculty of Sou- derton grow from approximately ten to our present force of seventy-seven. These years of service which we have received from him are truly prolific, and we, the class of 1961, wish him many enjoyable years during his forthcom- ing retirement. We are deeply grateful for the many things that he has made possible for us. Bill Godshall. Unaliyi Edi- tor. presents the dedication to Mr. Miller. giechcafion We. the class of 1961, proudly and with great pleasure dedicate this issue of the Unaliyi to Mr. Charles C. Miller, for he has contributed much toward making us, his pupils, better citizens. He has helped us lay a lirm foundation in which we can sink the roots of citizenship. And from these roots we can, with strength of character and persever- ance, rise to great heights. We will not soon forget his un- tiring and patient explanations of the intricacies of trigonometry, ge- ometry, and algebra, and his line work with the Audio-Visual Club in providing lighting and sound for our assemblies. It is our hope that by dedicating this book to Mr. Miller, we can ex- press in some small measure our appreciation and gratitude for his long and line service to us and to our school. WILLIAM MAXWELL, Senior High Principul MR. WILLIAM WARNER, Junior High Principal I I I 1 Elmer L. Hausman came to Souderton High School in the fall semester of 1960. Because the science suite is situated on the lirst floor, Mr. Hausman,s physics room was remote from our daily courses. With the exception of students taking physics and general science, the student body was generally unfamiliar with Mr. Hausman. Though few of us had time to know him well, his sudden death deeply saddened our senior year, and with solemn regret we dedicate this page in memory of him. Elmer L. Hausman entered Kutztown Preparatory School in 1913. He was enrolled in college preparatory courses and graduated in 1917. ln 1919, he attended Franklin and Marshall College, majoring in the field of science teaching, he re- ceived his B.S. in 1922. During the next 20 years, Mr. Hausman earned additional credits at the University of Pennsylvania, the Brooklyn School of Polytechnics, New York, and at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. In 1942, Mr. Hausman rendered his services to the United States War Trainees Program. At Souderton High School, Mr. Hausman taught physics and general science. His students will never forget the many experiences he shared with them, which helped to broaden their knowledge and enrich their classes. Toward the end of his teaching days, Mr. Hausman was frequently taken ill. He was finally compelled to leave his work altogether, and spent his remaining days confined to bed. Souder- ton High School was informed of the death of Elmer L. Hausman on February 23, 1961. 12 kglfl k.Mel4flOl'lQl4fl RICHARD BADMAN Mathematics West Chester State Teachers Col- lege, B,S. Ed. Although we knew Dan for only a brief period, we will long remember his lanky form and his quiet, unassuming disposition. After a series of heart operations and a long stay in a hospital, his valiant spirit could not long withstand the strain and he succumbed following the third and most serious operation. emoriam The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schlosser of Lederach, Daniel was a member of the Towamen- cin Mennonite Churchg he was a talented artist and handyman. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, and he spent much time in the outdoors. The preceding paragraphs are but a minute gesture, but we hope that in some small way they will express our feelings for this fine person and that they will keep alive his memory for many years. 47 Class iogralo cy In September, 1957, over two hundred freshmen began their high school careers. We were an eager, though apprehensive group, doing what we had been told must be done. Those of us planning for college knew what courses had to be selectedg those desiring specific vocations knew their exact aims for life, and even fewer had foresight enough to appreciate those formative years. As freshmen. we became a part of the high school social structure. Although obscure as in- ferior freshmen are. we were a part of the high school community and participated in those ac- tivities to which we were invited. At the close of our freshmen term, we selected our courses for the following year. Each term we were pre- sented with more and varied selective subjects, and eventually, as the new school system pro- gressed, our choice was almost unlimited. Though technically freshmen are the bottom of the high school hierarchy, it was not until our sophomore year that we were an actual part of the senior high student body. That year also saw us experiencing half-day sessions: the only year in Souderton High School history such a schedule was presented. Being in the senior high, we had the privilege of attending the morning session, while the junior high student body had their classes in the afternoon. That was the year Soud- erton High School became Souderton Area Joint High School, that was the year the new high school was born, that was the year that saw a revision in the student body structure: the junior high far outnumbered the senior high. That was the year the junior high school ceased to be an insignificant part of the school. and was an impressive function in the school community. When sophomores, we had to adjust to the presence of much older students. As young siblings, we had been aware of their presence, but now, as members of senior high school we had to work and associate with upper- classmen. As sophomores, we had to adjust to the fact that now we were the youngest group in senior high, whereas, the previous year, we had been the oldest and the ruling class. At the beginning of our junior year. we noticed a definite change in our relationship with the student body. As sophomores and freshmen, we were new and found it necessary to follow as we learned. Then. as juniors, we did the leading. With the senior class con- cerned with college acceptance and admittance, many duties fell our way. Such events as the Christmas Dance and the Junior-Senior Prom were our responsibilities. OFFICERS Left to right: Cheryl Conrad, Treasurerg Judie Godshall. Presi dent, Fred Weil, Vice-President: Carolyn Kulp, Secretary. To finance these events, we had the annual Pie and Cake Sale and held the record hops. As our junior year was ending, we gradually became aware that next year we would be seniors. From freshmen to seniors! None of us felt physically different, none of us looked much different, yet we were now completely apart from the rest of the student body. We ceased to go our individual ways. We became a functioning unit, realizing that as the senior class goes, so goes the high school. A yearbook had to be written, plays to be given, and graduation plans to be made. Anxiety over college acceptances was great as gradually our futures became more firmly molded and closely fitted. In the Spring, we took the traditional senior trip to Washington, D. C., climaxing our cohesiveness as a class. On Graduation night, we terminated an era in our lives which we will never forget. We had finished the four years we shall love and cherish as our high school days. As editor-in-chief we chose William Godshallg Kathryn Long and Ruth Ann Godshall were then chosen to be the two assistant editors. After the selection of editors and staffs, Miss Malloy met with our entire staff and outlined the book and its assignments. Headlines were written, pictures taken, copy written and re-written, and characters and artwork drawn. From These Roots was the theme to be carried throughout the entire book, and it was the chore of the editors to see this was acccomplished. While the staffs produced the yearbook, Mr. Odvlvisors Price and his business staff handled the many problems of financing and selling our book. At a January assembly, Mr. Price and his staff pre- sented the yearbook and announced the dedica- tion of the book to Mr. Miller. Few of us realized the enormous effort needed to produce such a book, and everyone concerned experienced a feeling of satisfaction and proud accomplishment when the final copy went to the presses. We sincerely appreciate the endless time contributed by our advisors, and feel confident that our 1961 Unaliyi is worthy of the credit and admiration it will receive. These auditions are held at a different school before a committee composed largely of the conductors of the league. After positions in the band are announced and awarded, the chosen band meets to prepare for their only concert. This concert is then presented at the school selected for that year. Since there were only a small number of returning lettermen, inexperience proved to be the major problem. The team was also hampered by troublesome injuries. Led by capable leaders: Don Gahman, Hal Riley, Art Gerhart, Bill West, and Charles Bult- man, the Indians progressed steadily throughout the season. Finishing strong, they won four of the last five games to finish in sixth place with a 4-4-1 record. Indians who received special awards were Hal Riley and Charles Bultman, who made first team All-Bux-Mont. Riley also won the Rushing Crown. Don Gahman, Art Gerhart, Brian Rosh- ong, Fred Hepler, Vance Harris and Jack Dunn, made All-Bux-Mont Honorable Mention. Mr. Palmer and his returning lettermen worked in the gyms and on the held when possible to bring a strong baseball team out of the dugout. The long standing tradition at Souderton of field- ing a good team on the diamond and of ending the season with a fine record was continued this year.
