Progress is the keynote of our daily living-the underlying principle of all our under- takings. Progress is evident in Souderton. One of the most rapidly developing seg- ments of our community is its educa- tional system. Souderton can point with pride to her academic achievements through the years, particularly those in secondary education. In 1930 the leaders of our community realized the need for a new and better high school. The men upon Whose shoul- ders fell the tremendous job of planning did their work well. With keen fore- sight they developed and accepted a school design that would serve the com- munity for a quarter of a century. At the time of its opening, Souderton High School was the ultimate in con- struction, containing all the latest con- veniences and unprecedented aids to education. Included in this building were many signs of advancement. Lux- urious in 1932-the gym, the up-to-date home economics rooms, the beautiful auditorium, the spacious cafeteria, the excellent library, the well - equipped science laboratories. All these are now considered to be indispensable in every modern school. Moreover, signs of progress in edu- cational theories were obvious. The many extra-curricular activities, the wide range of electives offered to stu- dents, the development of sports from a hobby enjoyed by a few participants to a full-scale organization supported by the entire community-these are fur- ther steps forward in our educational system. Through the intervening years, Sou- derton High School has served the com- munity well. Twenty-five classes have graduated from Souderton, and people in all walks of life cherish the knowl- edge and memories of the best years of their livesi' spent in S. H. S. However, we live in a changing world, and once again the need for improve- ment and advancement in the school system is evident. Once again the most recent educational trends will be fol- lowed. A new addition is being built, and Souderton High School will incor- porate and become the Souderton Area Joint School System. Naturally, the new school promises educational opportunities and lux- uries never conceived by our parents. This is Progress - the 1958 Unaliyi salutes it. .fn X wg- -w. Carol Weinert Elizabeth Gerhart UNALIYI . . . fAaf we mighf rememger With an eye to the future, the junior class of 1957 chose a committee to begin work on the senior yearbook, the Unaliyi, under the helpful guidance of Miss Weinert, Work got into full-swing in the fall with the election of the editor, Barbara Nace, and the assistant editors, Alfred Feingold and Kenneth Bergey. Calendar dates took on a new meaning- they were now the ever-looming deadlines. There followed a very successful sales campaign, capably handled by the business advisor, Miss Gerhart, and her associates, the business staff. Sales were greatly sup- plemented by the presentation of an original skit entitled Around the World in Eighteen Minutes. To carry out the tradition of its Indian name, Unaliyi-the meeting-place of friends -the staff decided to dedicate the 1958 Unaliyi to Souderton High School. Looking also to the future with a flair for originality, they used a colored picture of the school-a first at Souderton. Taking pictures, typing copy, holding meetings, and in general, just plain working -these were the many problems and tasks facing the yearbook staff. The time of our senior year flew past so swiftly, yet we shall have these pages to refresh our memories, to evoke fond recollec- tions, and to kindle the warm glow of remem- brance and sentimentality. And it was a great varsity that the 1958 season saw, possibly one of the best Souderton High will ever produce. Paced by the potent pitching arm of senior quarterback, Barry Rahng the daring, circus catch- ing of end, Larry Freed, the tremendous running power of Larry Buck Souder and S. Donald. Monk Moyer, two of the best scat backs in the Bux-Mont Leagueg and the talented kicking toe of Leonard Jones, the Indians stood as a formidable threat for the league title at the onset of the season. Unfortunately, the breaks didn't go Souderton's way and the Indians dropped three close decisions out Assistant coaches: W. Coyle, W. Boorse, R. Schwab. 88 of their first five games. However, these heart- breaking losses didn't dampen the team's spirit and the Indians fought back to finish the rest of the season undefeated and notch third place in the league with a 7-3 record. Indians who received special awards were Larry Freed and Barry Rahn, first team All-Bux-Mont fthe latter being elected permanent team captain and also the team's most valuable playerlg Larry Souder and S. Donald Moyer, second team All Bux- Mont. fMoyer also won the Bux-Mont scoring titleb, and Paul Tressler, All Bux-Mont Honorable Mention. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year Souderton fielded its strong- est basketball team in many a season. Built around the nucleus of five returning letter- men, the Indians, for the first time in many seasons were being considered as a serious threat for the league title. Spearheaded by captains Barry Rahn and Larry Freed, an All-Bux-Mont per- former in 1957, seniors Leonard Jones, and S. It is once again time to get out the baseball bats, gloves, and suits-time for the Souderton fans to come to the games and cheer for the team. As usual, Souderton is expected to have a strong team. With graduation taking away the core of the pitching staff and a number of regulars of the previous season, the team will feel a definite loss. But with six lettermen from last year's team returning, this loss should be overcome. The six lettermen are these: Larry Souder, playing shortstopg Barry Rahn, holding down the initial sackg Wilson Kratz, working from behind the plate 3 Robert Bunton, Carl Weitzel, and Ray Mininger, roaming the pastures. With the abundance of capable juniors and sophomores to help the veterans, this team should give the Souderton fans something to cheer for. 98 Close play at first. But all this work is truly paying off, for track, once a sport that drew little attention from anyone at Souderton, is rapidly drawing the interest of many fans and becoming one of the most popular sports around S. H. S. The boys making up the nucleus of this year's track squad are returning lettermen Larry Freed, S. Donald Moyer, Leonard Jones, Paul Tressler, Alfred Feingold, and Royden Clemens. HOCKEY With the arrival of hockey season, approxi- mately sixty girls heeded Miss White's call for recruits, giving her an extremely wide selection from which to choose. However, out of this large group there was only one returning letterman, Susan Schnabel, who was elected captain for the 1957-'58 season. Other seniors who maintained a berth on the team and who should be lauded for their excellent sportsman- ship, co-operation, and capability are Virginia Stoneback, Barbara Nace, Virginia Matczak, Suzanne Kelso, and Gertrude Beck. SOFTBALL With four returning lettermen plus a host of promising juniors and sophomores, the 1958 softball team has high hopes for a successful season. The four lettermen are senior Susan Schnabelg two juniors, Mary Stover and Sandra Hunsbergerg and one sophomore, Phyllis Ruth. Susan, the slugger of the team, is an excellent outfielderg she has had plenty of previ- ous experience having played on the varsity team since her freshman year. Mary, another slugger, has also earned a letter since her freshman year. The experience of Sandy and Phyllis should prove a great value to the team.
