As coach of girls' hockey, basketball, and softball, she has led her teams to many champion- ships in the years she has been with us. An athlete in her own right, Miss White was chosen a member of the United States Tour- ing Hockey Team last year, and spent the spring and summer playing with the team in Australia, New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific. Although the gymnasium, court, and field keep her very busy, she finds time to advise and chaperone extra-curricular affairs, and, an ardent Souderton fan, she seldom misses any contest in which our school participates. For all these things, and many more, this is our way of saying, Thank you, Miss White. 6 MISS IRENE M. WHITE Administration Ami Eiaculty their time was our time . .. Left to right: Paul M. Carol Miss Elizabeth Hallman Alderfer Famous Weinert Gerhart Every year, since the first Unaliyi was pub- lished in 1940, the staff has endeavored to pre- sent a comprehensive story of life at S.H.S. Work on the '57 Unaliyi began early in the fall of 1956 with the election of our editor-in- chief, Barbara Fretz. Then, working in con- junction with the faculty advisers, Miss Weinert and Miss Gerhart, she selected the assistant editors and soon the compiling of the book went into full swing. A variety of problems confronted our new editors, but in a short time the staffs were or- ganized, Chimes of Time was chosen as the theme, and an unusual black padded cover was ordered. On November 15 one-third of the book was turned over to the publishing company and, at nearly the same time, the sales staff launched a selling campaign, hoping to sell' a record number of yearbooks. In order to meet the early deadlines, everyone took the theme, TIME, to heart, and we became fifty-one of the world's most anxious clock-watchers. However, the staff got down to work and completed the entire book by March. Since a countless number of hours were de- voted to the Unaliyi, the members felt well- rewarded for their labor by the satisfaction of turning out a book which, in the future, would bring back vivid memories to all of its readers. ,Activities Staff Left to right: C. Under the faculty adviser, Mrs. Kleist, the editors, Marilyn Barndt and Elizabeth Clemens, the Arrowhead made a con- siderable stride in improving its depth of coverage of school affairs. Student Kounczl STRIVES FOR A BETTER AND MORE DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTION Although the task of running the school lies entirely in the administration, Student Council tries successfully, to influence S.H.S. policies toward the best interests of the students. The president, Claire Garrecht, and the coun- cil, working together with the administration, are responsible for its many accomplishments -the sponsoring of a refugee, the provision for hall monitors to avoid congestion, the pre- sentation of assembly programs, and the elec- tion of the Citizens of the Week. Composed of representatives from each home- room who are elected by the student body for one-semester terms, Student Council has be- come a very important and efficient organiza- tion at our school. Claire Garrecht President if '1 me Q Hand hours spent on precision produce perfection One of the most highly regarded bands in the Bux-Mont League is our own S.H.S. Band which, under the experienced direction of Mr. Foulke, has maintained its reputation as a well-balanced, precision organization. Our Band always added flavor to a football game-win, lose, or draw. Their pre-game highlight was the two-line formation leading from the goal posts, through which the foot- ball players made their entrance onto the field: and the half-time routine featuring Rock Around the Clock proved to be very popular among the spectators. At the conclusion of the football season, Sousa MAURICE FOULKE Band Director was traded for Bach, the marching band was converted into a concert band, and the follow- ing weeks were spent practicing numbers for the Christmas Candlelight Service. It was at this concert that the new set of tympani made its initial appearance. Almost simultaneously, the Band then worked on the halftime shows for basketball season, and the annual Spring Concert. For both events they never failed to delight the audience by playing an unlimited number of songs. With the end of the school term, the Band laid their instruments aside as another successful season came to a close. K .. . A if fi ag M y i Z., M? wir, ,W . THE MEMBERSHIP Solo Trumpet: R. Kratz D. Under the direction of Judy Kulp, captain, and Miss Patricia Woomer, faculty adviser, the majorettes did a commendable job when it came time to perform in the brisk, wintry weather that accompanied our football games. They made a pleasant picture, indeed, gaily marching down the field leading the band and twirling their silvery batons. Consisting of forty-six members, the Chorus was one of the finest ever to perform at S.H.S. and although small in number, these voices blended with terrific volume. The selection of members was made solely by an ability test with special emphasis placed on three kev factors that help greatly in producing a good singing-organization-vocalization, sight reading, and pitch. Two highlights of the year-the annual Christmas Candlelight Service and the Spring Concert-presented in conjunction with the junior chorus and band, provided a great deal of relaxation and enjoyment for the audience. The candlelight procession by the senior and junior chorus girls, plus the traditional Hallelu- jah Chorus put the assembled persons in a reverent Christmas spirit. The soloists for this occasion were Elizabeth Clemens, Lucille Benner and Mary Jane Hagey. Much credit is due to the directress of the Chorus, Miss Ailene Nase, who has done a splendid job in developing our chorus. First Row, left to right: J. Hammerschmidt, E. Clemens, S. Hanns, M. J. Na Mare Homework On Saturday night, October 27, No More Home- work was very successfully presented by the senior class. The characters came alive as they portrayed- with evident relish-the situations that developed on a typical high school day. When Pamela jones is asked to take over the job of principal at Ames High School, things really begin to happen. Buzz Bailey, her boyfriend, unexpected- ly finds himself doubling as vice-principal and home ec teacher, with an omelette in one hand and a dress pattern in the other. Shalimar Ames, attractive but spoiled, takes over for Miss Dill, who is out with a cold. Romance kicks up its heels, too. Who would have ever guessed that the elderly Miss Goodin carried a torch for the confirmed faculty bachelor, Mr. Harper? Who could have imagined that '4Tick Tok, the diminutive janitor, would eventually dominate Mrs. Ratchet, the demon scrub lady who-everybody suspected-rode home each night on her broomstick. One complication leads to another. Mrs. Clenden- ning, the science teacher, is constantly complaining about the terrific heat in her room: Miss Goodin, about the cold: someone accidentallv locks a lim- burger cheese sandwich in the trunkful of costumes for Rusty Wings, the school play: and a dozen other things happen keeping the acting-principal, Pamela Jones, in a whirl! She even has to fill in for the lead of the school play at the last minute, and, as a result, runs into trouble with Tallulah Ploetz, the real actress. Then somehow, with the return of Mr. Lundquist, the real principal, situations manage to correct them- selves, and the whole school returns to normal. Well . . . more or less! Captained by Souderton's two most all-round athletes-big Ron Frede- rick, six foot one inch center. and Joe Billger, one of the league's speediest courtmen-the team fought hard in game after game, believing that the out- come would depend entirely upon what each player contributed to the contest. Whose distant footsteps echo through the rorridorx ay' time. On this page we, the class of 1957 take time to remember and pay tribute to James Lester Keller. jim came to us from Telford, and his record there was excellent. His scholastic average of B+ rated him highest among the boys. He was class treasurer in grades six, seven and eight. In his eighth grade at Telford he represented the school in the county spelling contest at Norristown. Jimmy was with us three months in high school when he underwent brain surgery. His recovery was remarkable, and he returned to school the following fall. Again his health failed him. This time he was confined to his home, where he continued his edu- cation, with the help of his high school teachers. Although his health declined to the point of bed confinement, his faith in God became a stronghold through the remaining two years of his sojourn on earth. We will always remember Jim as a hard worker, and as a dependable, popular person. The memory of his friendly smile will live on in our hearts. James passed on August 19, 1956.
