T O stars Eoruc ELEMENTARY DAYS Sept 7 1939 one of the brggest days of our l1ves We all wondered what was gomg to happen and why we were sent up to the lrttle whrte school house on the h1l1 Mrs Butterworth had to hold about half of the class on her lap and dry thetr tears There we met for the fxrst trme, new frrends wrth whom we fought and played In the second grade we were allowed for the f1rst ttme to enter the Rhythm Band whrch was the school s prrde and Joy wrth the1r l1ttle red and whrte capes and hats We were fmally frndrng out what school was all about because we were now rn the thrrd and fourth grades where we trred to learn our mult1pl1cat1on tables and had our f1rst brtter dose of h1story and geography we were very good at havrng frghts on our way home from school Mary Sturgrll you wouldn t happen to remember thrs would you The frfth and slxth grades we really had II rough We had about SIX drfferent teachers rn one year All types We had one who left because we were so mean one left breakrng 1nk bottles poundrng on the desk to keep us quret That strll hasn t been accomplrshed by any teacher so she 1sn t the only one who srlver star put by our name Seventh grade we got our f1rst thrrll of berng one of the older upper classmen We had our basket ball toumaments and the softball tournaments The former Mrss Bess Head fnow Mrs j that well known and loved teacher took us on frequent nature hunts and we always managed to st1r up a Yellow Jackets nest We bet Mona Nxcely remembers th1s Mrss Head was strrctly a sol1d southerner so rf we wanted to avord a class we got her started on her facorrte subject the C1v1l War therefore you can guess we heard about the C1v1l War from momrng trll nrght Well we fxnally made the erghth grade We were strrctly brg shots or so we thought We had our sorrows th1s year as well as the fun On Easter morn1ng we awoke only to frnd our school burned to the ground We contlnued our last year rn the church M1ss Head took some of the students to her home tn V1rg1n1a and showed them many hrstorrcal spots fof the ClV11 War of coursej It was really a trtp to remember l belreve Kenna w1ll agree to that Well fmally Baccalaureate Sermon and Commencement was over and we were frnally ready to contmue our educatton at dear ole Sophia Hrgh In thrs graduatrng class of 51 there are only four of the Slab Fork students who have remamed together all twelve years Tommy Prtzer how d1d you stand us three g1r1sP 47 C L A S S H I S R Y tried in vain, Then there were the races to see who could read the most library books just to get a little
