As we look back to the time our 1969 graduates arrived on our campus and consider the situation which exists today these changes are only too evident. When our graduates began their studies on this campus we had a student b-ody enrollment of i,284. Our student enrollment has increased year by year and today we have 2,126 young people enrolled in our university. - ' . In order to take care of this increase in our student body it hasbeen necessary to put a strong emphasis on our building program. Each year we have seen new buildings rise on our campus. In the - ,period of time our graduating class has been with us the following buildings have been erected: Ward Chapel, and Library, English Language Lab, Residence for men, -new classroom building, three ' I' Q-Palffment buildings for twelve faculty families, two apartment buildings for staff, new home for the president, apartment building for missionary teachers. - 3 i1There have' also been vast improvements in our curriculum. Just last year we .added two departments to our present curriculum. - a Department of General Business and a Department of ' Business Mathematics. With these two new departments we were able to establish a new college-the College of Commerce. Another thing that has been evident has been our increased emphasis upon our quality of teaching. We have secured a number of full-time faculty members who live in the new housing on our campus. This has resulted in a betterteaching program 'as well as increased quality in teaching. As we reflect upon the past there is no desire to conclude that we have met all of the challenges confrontingour university. We are confident that growth will continue in all of these areas and, four or five years from now, we will be an even greater university than we are today. We also know that physical growth is not enough by itself. Our real test as a university comes at the point of how well we have prepared our graduates to take their place in the world of today. One of the basic purposes of education is to equip men and women to find their role in society and make a contribution in the situation in which they find themselves. Soochow seeks to build character, to instill principles and values and to challenge its students to serve mankind. Our aim and purpose is to train students who, after graduation, will find their place in society and make their contribution to the ongoing 'of life. Our country today is involved in the great task of nation-building. China needs the contributions that you can make to help build a strong nation. i - p , How well we have succeeded in carrying out our purposes will be determined by what you, our graduates, do with your knowledge, talents and energies. It is my hope that the reputation of our school will be enhanced by what you do. May you be known as men and women of high principle and moral character, as those who are willing to give of themselves in serving mankind. u I am happy to be able to extend my heartiest congratulations in reaching this milestone in your career-graduation from. Soochow University. I aiso wish you all success in your future endeavors and accomplishments. ' e V ' A fff . '? . v 1 - lofi 'i 1 i 'i . ':.- 'XL UQ 52 '..v,, ,':1--g.
