The -Department, of Foreign Languages and Literature The 'Soochow University program in Foreign- Languages and Literature has two objectives. It seeks first'to develop skill. in accurately and effectively communicating facts and ideas both orally and in writing in the English language. Secondly it seeks to provide some understanding and appreciation of Western literature, which is essential to a modern language-student. ' The University requires every student, irrespective of department, 'six hours of English reading and grammar and five hours of oral and auditiory training, distributed throughout his freshman and sophomore years, In addition, frequent Written exercises with criticisms from his instructors in scheduled conferences gives him an opportunity to improve his Writing ability. This emphasis on the study of English for all students is in accordance With. the University's long established principle that a graduate from Soochow must' be well versed in the use of the English language. A In addition to the above basic training which is common to all students, every candidatefor a Bachelor's degree in this department must have completed 150 credits, some of which are in the field of languag.es other than English, and some are related to Western literature. After four years of schooling, a graduate from this department should have laid good foundation for avocation, be it in teaching, translating. secretarial work or self-cultivation through the study of literature.
