MAN the president Soochow University is fortunate to have its campus in the beautiful Wai Shuang Hsi Valley, one of the scenic spots in Taipei. The faculty and students have written and sung many verses or poems about its beauty. Some of these verses or poems have appeared in the publications of the university. ln the fall of 1958 when the Law College first moved onto the campus, it had just one academic building that is the classroom building, and there were only a few farmers in the valley living in small cottages scattered in the hills, roads laid with asphalt were nonexistent. A year or two afterwards, the government proclaimerl Wai Shuang Hsi. Valley to be a cultural district, an atmosphere and environment appropriate for education of the young people was intended to be generated. ln a short time one after the other came the Administrative School, Wesley Girls School, the Central Studio and Chung San Museum. A fine asphalt road lined with cypresses along its two sides was constructed, and th-e development of modern transportations followed. Along the hillsides and beside the paddy fields sprang into existencea large number of private residences. ' . ln the past eight or nine years 'Wai Shuang Hsi Valley has made considerable changes. The new cultural institutions and schools with their fine buildings tend to produce an edifying effect and make the valley look even more beautiful. ln such surroundings Soochow University has grown in the past years. Including four faculty residences, nine new buildings have been erected, and there have been obvious improvements in the quality of the students and their scholarship. But this is still. far from what Soochow University hopes to be able to do. What does Soochow University hope to be able to do? To answer this question, it might be well to cite again two universally accepted principles of Christian higher education, as we find them stated by Silliman University in the Philippines. One of them is: A Christian university must help guide the fundamental changes in culture and in social structure on which the salvation of society depends, by providing Christian leadership which will understand the needs and hopes of the peple and direct them wisely. The other is: lf a Christian university is to live up to its reputation, justify confidence built on past accomplishments, and keep pace with rapidly developing government universities, it must emphasize quality rather than quantity. Evangelical higher education should attempt to compete only at a high level, where superiority counts. The job to carry out these principles is not an easy one. To realize them, earnest participation by students in all the educational'programs of the university including the religious program is necessary, and to this end they must be ready to alter their attitude and philosophy of life towards a higher level. that they ,may be better able to serve society after leaving school. I For the Christian purpose, competition with government universities will, then, simply be a competition in the fostering of noble. leadership, leadership among men and women who are of strong character as well as ability and learning. In this a Christian university ought to be able to do better than a non-Christian institution. S3 our graduates will bear the responsibility to show to the world that the education they have received at Soochow is a type of education that serves society best. A This foreword carries with it the writer's congratulations and best wishes to the 1957 graduating classes. n A
