Someone has said that good luck is in being prepared when opportunity knocks. You, the students, are now making your good luck. The graduating seniors will soon be opening the door of opportun- ity. The underclassmen still have some preparation ahead of them. Your good luck is here for the taking-in the form of knowledge and skills you can gain in school. We have entered a new age, the Atomic Age and the Age of Automation. The demands of this age of ac- celerated technological development will be satisfied only by men and women ofhigh ideals and intelligence with superior training. The day of the unskilled laborer is almost a memory. The world of today and the world of tomorrow will be won only by those who have prepared themselves with knowledge and skills to win it. Only a short time ago science fiction was pure fantasy. Now the fantasy is becoming a fact. Jules Verne 's Nauti- lus is now roaming the oceans. Man-made satellites are spinning madly around the earth. Within your life- time, space flights are almost a certainty. We are now in a technological crisis. It takes about nine years of schooling to make a scientist and we of the free world desperately need scientists. It would seem that opportunity is not only knocking on the door, it is virtually battering it down. Will you be prepared? Only education and training can do it. To you with interests and abilities in science, this is your golden opportunity. Prepare yourselves! While we are concerned with science and technology, let us not overlook that fact that what may be even more important is our ability to grasp and maintain leadership in government, in human relationships and world affairs. The opportunities here, though not dramatic, are just as real and just aspressing. Now is the time for you students to prepare yourselves to accept the challenge. To the underclassmen, we say bring back with you the next' year renewed determination and vigor to pursue these objectives. To the graduating class, we say good luck!
