' - ..., V .ff If you were to look in a mirror that would enable you to see the reflection of 50 years ago, what would you find? You would find half a century has wrought many changes. Clothes styles have certainly changed and even customs and ideas. There has been quite a change in yearboolcs also. A Green and Gold of 50 years ago contained 5 pictures in a 50-page book. Eleven pages were filled with ads and jokes. In the remaining 26 pages there were stories and poems written by students. An editorial stated that the Green and Gold was devoted to Literature, Athletics, Social News, Humor and other Interests of the School. In today's Green and Gold there are many more pic- tures but much less writing. The 1957 Green and Gold is almost 5 times as large as that of 50 years ago. We of the staff hope this 50th volume will afford you many hours of pleasurable remembrances. MIMI SIKORA, Editor MEMORIAL POOL OF TUOLUMNE COUNTY A long-fostered dream of Tuolumne County residents was realized in June 1956, when a new 365,000 public swimming pool was opened on the campus of the Sonora Union High School. For more than 30 years the project had been planned and dreamed of by public spirited citizens, but the entire heart and soul of the community was not in this huge volunteer project until a memorial fund was established for jean Palmer, a little girl who drowned. However, a four-year-long fund raising campaign reached the goal in the fall of 1955. The fund represented donations from nearly everyone in the county in funds, materials, or labor. At that time the Board of Trustees of Sonora Union High School agreed that the community swimming pool could be built on school property, and the construction was underway. , Community leaders who participated as a volunteer Board of Directors in making the pool a reality were: Norman Hill, President Mrs. Louis Price, Vice President Mrs. Leslie Grooms, Secretary Marcel Baer, Treamrer Archie D. Stevenot Richard Palmer Milton Dambacher DeLaine Burks Dr. Herbert E. Wilson Mrs. Josie Terzich M. O. Queirolo Wilson Meyer Donald I. Segerstrom Floyd Stirewalt james R. Hardin the late F. Edmund O'Connell Indeed the new pool is a living memorial to those in whose memory many donations were made. It is with deep gratitude that we dedicate this Green and Gold to all those people who contributed their time, money, materials, and labor to the realization of a longtime dream. -...- .,.us-m..m..,f , A swarm ' The udmiuistrutiou building, erected in 1906, the gym, in 1922, and the science building and auditorium, built in 1939, are shown above. L NN' MOTHERS' TEA This annual event was given by the Girls' League on May 23. Carrying out the theme of U.S.S. Fashionaire, girls from the homemalcing classes modeled clothes they had macle which would be appropriate for a boat trip. Students presented a musical programg after which tea was served. 9 as ax! fl mill An Evening in Paris was the theme for the junior-Senior Prom on May 26. A large, authentic-looking Eiffel Tower was in the center of the dance floor. On the outer edges were sidewalk cafes where refreshments were served by waiters. Leo Liberty and his band furnished the music for dancing. ll f 2N On June 9 the newly organized parent, teacher, student organization, the YAT Club, held a western picnic supper at Dunlavy Field. The program for the evening included swimming in the Tuolumne County Memorial Pool, games, singing, skits, dancing, and a YAT PICN IC picnic supper - with coffee and soft drinks sold by S.U.H.S. students. Over 200 people attended the picnic. Dues to the club were sold by some high school students. This first family get- together was so successful we hope that it is repeated often. ,Q -if . 5 S. Each page is a memory of a friend, a place, or an event. You will remember this year for many things - that A in Trig., the fine football team, your date to the Prom, or even how crowded we all were with our record enrollment. These are things we will all remember. Is this enough to remember? Sometimes we forget what should be the most important. Will we remember to thank God for His guidance and the opportunities that were ours as a free people in a free land? Here we were Freshmen, both dreading and enjoying it. Then we heard the news-INITIATION. The little Freshman girl looked so cute with her hair set with clothes pins, and the Freshman boy with his pants leg rolled up and a green ribbon tied on his leg was a handsome sight. After initiation we settled clown and elected officers. They were Pete Aroz, Presidentg Phil Atkisson, Vice Presidentg Norma Bartlett, Secretary, Anne Lackey, Treasurer, and Bobo Leonard, Sergeant-at-Arms. We planned a Sophomore Return and gave a party to equal our Fresh- man Reception.. Then before we knew it, we were Sophomores and made plans to initiate the Frosh. Our class officers were Phil Atkisson, President, Rich Miller, Vice President, june Gotelli, Secretary, Vivian Gould, Treasurerg and Gary Robles, Sergeant-at-Arms. All of a sudden we were Juniors-thinking about our Junior rings, the Junior play, and the Prom. This year our officers were Bill Kerr, Presidentg Pat Schweickert, Vice Presi- dent, Norma Bartlett, Secretary, Gueda Brandi, Treasurer, and jim Moore, Sergeant-at- Arms. We ordered our rings in October from the Iosten Company. Then we were putting on the comedy play, We Shook the Family Tree,'l which proved to be very successful. And after many hours of hard work we presented to the Seniors the Prom-An Evening in Paris. That :night we realized that our many hours of work were well deserved. Finally we're Seniors with a feeling of dread that we had our Frosh year returning. Our play was 'The Double Barreled Detective Story -a mystery comedy. Weill never forget Ditch Day, the Banquet, and Baccalaureate. Graduation day has arrived, the day we say thank youl' to all those who have helped us and good-bye to all our friends. Seated are Nadine Crabtree, Vice President, Lynne Zumo, President, and Carol Ghiorso, Secretary. CLASS HISTORY At last! It was here! The big day when we entered S.U.H.S. as Freshmen! We were greeted by smiling Sophomores who, during that first week, gave us a welcome that put to shame any other. We started the year successfully under the leadership of Martin Wynne, Presidentg Neola Shaw, Vice President, Bonnie Woolard, Secretary, janet Robles, Treasurer, and Nadine Crabtree, Representative. We were ably sponsored by Mrs. Musser and Mr. Huff. Both were always around to lend us a helping hand. , Our Activities that year included an after game dance by which our treasury profited. We gave the annual Sophomore Return. A wonderful rally was presented. Carol Robin- son was elected Carnival Queen. Suddenly we were Sophomores with only three more years until graduation. A fine group of officers were elected, headed by Bill jones as President. Mrs. Musser and Mr. Huff were again our sponsors, and Mr. Keyser also served as a sponsor. That year we had the pleasure of having Yngve Nakling as our classmate. His father was an exchange teacher from Norway. Our projects through the year were an after game dance, a cake sale, and an assembly. Our March of Dimes queen was Ernestine Ryals and later we elected Betty West for our carnival queen candidate. Since our first year of high school we have talked of our junior rings, the junior play, and the Junior-Senior Prom. Now we are turning our thoughts and ideas into realities. We have had many happy experiences in our journey, three quarters finished. ...ai David Aced Bob Algeo Donna Allan George Allen johnny Arvin Carolyn Baker Larry Bedford Anna Berner Phyllis Blagen Bill Blake jim Bonora Christie Bryant F f Q ...il 4, mn 35? i --P' T ' , t m . SOPHOMORES Sophomore officers shown above are Bob Watts, Representativeg Mr. Melendez, Sponsor, Carlin Jardine, Vice President. Seated are Genevieve Erhardt, Treasurerg Paul Sikora, Presidentg and JoAnn Davis, Secretary. CLASS HISTORY Looking back to last year, we find that, in spite of scare tactics by the Sophomores during initiation, we had an enjoyable and a profitable year. An outstanding group of officers, headed by President Jon Calvert, did much to get us off to a good start. Two girls in our class came in second in queen contests: Carol Eddy in the Football Queen Contest and Genevieve Erhardt in the March of Dimes Contest. This year we started off by welcoming, the Frosh to Sonora Union High School. After a rollicking program with the freshmen as the stars, we felt that they were duly uwelcomedl' and entertained them at a party. During football season a number of Sophomores proved to be valuable players for the BH team. We are proud of the thirteen Sophomore lettermen on this year's B C0-Champions. Money was raised by two concessions during basketball season, and several other projects throughout the year. Our Sponsors, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Eaton, and Mr. Melendez, had a lot to do with the success of the class in everything it did. We have reached to half way mark in high school. The first half has been wonderful, and we're looking forward to an equally wonderful and successful second half. Before we could become full-fledged members of the student body, we were welcomed by the Sophomores. For our wel- come the boys had to wear their Levis inside out and a blouse instead of a shirt, and the girls wore their skirts inside out and had on different shoes. On Friday, the Sopho- mores demonstrated to the school the talents possessed by us in such fields as shoe shin- ing, modeling, and sack racing. The Sophomores also gave us a Welcome Party. On january 17, we put on the annual Sophomore Return for them. Everyone wore colorful crepe-paper hats which were handed out at the door. After entertainment and dancing, refreshments were served. We got a good start in building up our treasury when we won 3550 in a contest sponsored by Burks' Shoe Store. Our funds were increased by putting on a very successful dance after the Escalon football game. On November 14, our boys outplayed the Sophomores and won the annual Fresh- man-Sophomore Game by a score of 13-12. Mrs. jaenecke, Mrs. Wolfe, and Mr. Dyreson, our sponsors, were very cooperative, and much of our success is due to them. We hope that our next three years in high school will be as happy as this past one has been.
