This year I find it par- ticularly hard, as I am the newcomer who has sought your help in learning of the traditions and accomplishments of your school and community. What I have learned, I have liked. You have a school and a community of which you may be iustly proud. Your school commands respect throughout the State of California. It is principally through your efforts that this respect has been attained. By continued effort your splendid reputation can be increased and expanded. I look forward with eager- ness to working with you for an ever-improving school. It is with regret that I watch the seniors leave the school for I have not yet had a chance to know them well. However, to each of them goes the schooI's sincere wishes for success and happiness. Through this book they may look back to school days, to old friends, dances, games and classes. We hope the life pictured here is one of pleasure and profit. Its success will be measured by how well the grad- uates become people of quality and worthy members of our American society. ame47fZ.2 PRINCIPAL Pictured below at 'he left is our Principal, Mr. James M Reusswig. Back in the days when he was an eager freshman, and couldn't get his locker open, or became lost in the school, he looked forward to this-his graduation day-so vaguely distant at times. Now that it is here, it frightens him. He thinks of his four years of high school and now they seem to have been so short-all too short, but all a wonder- ful dream. Like all dreams it ends as suddenly as it begins, and now he is faced with the reality of the future. He cannot turn back, he must go forward. I The iuniors, having completed three years of high school, are now beginning to realize the great responsibilities of a full-fledged Sonora high school student. For three years they have intermittently worked and played and advanced step by step. They know that certain goals must be reached and that they must work harder if they wish to attain their goal. Reminiscently they look back on their previous years, and although they have thought this year their best, they realize that this is the same thought that has come with each year. So with great hope and anxiety they await their final glory - the attainment of graduation, and the challenge of the future. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS-Left to right are R. CLASS RINGS-Lasting reminders of high school life are the class rings ordered by all students during their iunior year. Class rings these days are serving a special purpose. They are exchanged by steadies. The link thus established may be momentary or permanent. What about the problem of over or under size rings as a result of this romantic exchange? Girls may tape the rings to their fingers or attach them to a chain. Putting the girl's ring on a chain is almost a must for the boy-as the ring is almost always too small to fit on the boy's finger. By leading the kids in clapping and doing their cute little routines when the band plays at the rallies and games, they help to give a lot more spirit to our school. They have done much in the past two years to make us proud of them, Our cheerleaders, Ronnie and Mary Lou tried out the same as the song leaders, with the understanding that Lois would join them later. Mary Lou and Lois are seniors this year, and Ronnie is a junior. They had unusual uniforms this year, made ot cotton material, instead of the customary heavier winter mal terials. Q 6245 Long remembered by all at Sonora High will be the school year of 1953-54, and one of the most important reasons is that the student body was able to sing their own alma mater for the first time. Skip Mohatt, student body president, put the irons in the fire when he pro- posed that an alma mater be written. Credit for the song goes to Mr. Calvin Crabill's music theory class which com- posed both the words and music, making Sonora one of the few high schools with an original alma mater. The song was written in only one week. Members of the music theory class who worked on the song were: Terry Mill- ard, Shelia Curtis, Jocelyn Gillmore, Kenny Ishmael, Kenny Jardine, Terry Barker, Jean Hamilton, and Byron Smith. The words to the song are as follows: Hail Sonora High School The Green and Gold wave high, So Iet's raise our banner Forever to the sky. Oh, lift your voices loudly For the world to hear, This is our high school Alma mater dear. Show your true allegiance For all the world to see, And to our alma mater Faithful ever be. I Coach McGrath told the story that written words can never tell when he stated in a short speech at an Awards Assembly: l could not be any prouder of this team if they had won the championship. He made one more statement at the end of football season that also sizes it up. In writing a letter to the team explaining why he would not permit them to accept an invitation to play unbeaten Oroville High in a post-season game, he opened by saying, To my greatest team ever. lt was the greatest team ever in Sonora's his- tory and in Coach McGrath's life. McGrath might have teams that will win more games, and So- nora might have had teams that won more, but never before has a coach and a school been blessed with a team like the 1953 Wildcats. They had the lightest backfield in the league, but they had the biggest hearts and a desire to win that could only be felt. They played every minute of every game with only one thought, to winrto win for their coach, their school, and for 7 -7955 their teammates. lt was a team that can not be forgotten. To point out certain outstanding individuals is hard to do with this team, for they all played great ball. Nevertheless, there were some who stood out. Don Jardine, the lightest player in the league, gave Coach McGrath many proud moments. Jar- dine was the kind of player who had to be seen to appreciate his ability. He was one of the top ground gainers and scorers in Northern Califor- ma. Bob Riedel, another light back, was second only to Jardine in Valley Oak League scoring and ground gaining. McGrath calls Riedel one of the greatest high school runners he has seen. Despite his lack of weight, Riedel gained most of his yardage on line plunges. The crushing tackling of Harold Marquette, Bob Hargrove, and Bill Buckman, featured the bruis- ing line play. Defensive work of these three was at all times great. -:Q K , ART MCGRATH Coach BOB GIBSON Assistant Coach Q Only 34 points were scored in nine games on Sonorafs great defensive team. Only six teams in all Northern California could boast of a better record. Jardine, Riedel, Meza, Edwards, Reibin, Fer- nandes, Marquette, Hargrove, Buckman, Stephens, McCready, Clark, Gotelli, Rotelli, Hudson, and McGowan, will be long remembered by Coach Art McGrath. Yes, and these boys will long re- member a man who is more than lust a coach- a man that will always hold a place in these boys' hearts and memories. From the last man on the bench on up, this was a rugged ball club that played hard football. This was a great team. lt was robbed of a deserved championship by two points, when on successive Friday nights they lost their only two games: first to league champion Downey, 7-6, and then to runner-up Tracy, 13-12. In the hearts of all Sonora partisans this team will be remem- bered always as the uncrowned champions. TEAM MASCOT-At the beginning of the year Wayne Hamlin was acting as our Wiley. Coach Bud Castle this year brought Sonora High the school's first Valley Oak League football championship. This team couldn't hide their skinny legs and arms, but hidden within each one of them was a heart as big as a football, said Castle. lt was a very well balanced team with a great will to win. The Kittens lost only one game-that a one-pointer to Manteca-on their road to the championship. They beat the co-champion, Downey, by one point. The hard driving of Bill McCowan and Al Dossa, the tricky running of Bucky Henington, Ted Camicia, and Ralph Burford, the excellent quarterbacking of Jack Delbar, and the tremendous line play of Darryl Merrihew, Ellsworth Smith, Orville Pope, and Roddy Hamilton, and Bob McBride, brought the championship to Sonora. Ui if ll g The highlight of the year for the Sonora Wildcats was the first over-night bas- ketball trip ever taken by a Sonora basketball team. The Wildcats iourneyed to I B . Daly City late in December, where they played Jefferson High, and spent the 'Q Edwards night at the Mission Bell Motel. The trip took two days that will remain in the ..1' 16 memories of the team for years. Who can forget wise guys like Dick Algeo, Lloyd VA, ix, ' iii Hobby, and Jack Brotherton dropping a bag of water on Gale Slicton's head as .VVVVS he stood, foolishly, below their second story window, and Slicton raging with 5 1 siiif...i anger hollering back at the boys, Just for that you won't play tonight Until the Ma,qUe,,e 5 .- season's end Gale was called Coach Slicton by the team after that memorable A. moment. Y ' 5 Don Reid, Jack Brotherton, and Lloyd Hobby, all B players a year before, ' N practiced continually for a year in the local gym and it paid off, for these three -Jil Bwtheftof' turned into top players. Dan Meza, Lane Pierce, and Lloyd Hobby, all juniors, , A promised to be the foundation of a great basketball team for the forthcoming '54-'55 season. Despite the fact that Sonora had a lower than .500 average, there was a pride Mem vi 'il t t i felt by Coach Bud Castle and all concerned in this team of '53-'54-a pride that comes from being one of, or one connected with a team that possesses a com- , petitive spirit few teams ever have, a competitive spirit that is impossible to describe in words. .5 gi L g- Reid E ,,,. 4 Z -- iii' ww C,-eb,-1 B TEAM MEMBERS above, first row, left to right: R. For the season's opener the Kittens had Denny White and Gary Salazar, for- wards, Gary Robles, center, and Don Jardine and Roddy Hamilton, guards. They got off to a slow start, although they won their opener. This was a team of the future. Three experienced ballplayers balanced out a team that had one of two freshmen starting most of the time and a third starter, Jerry MacDonald, who was playing his first year of B basketball. Freshmen like Gary Robles, Bobo Leonard, and Pete Aroz were a treat for the spectators' eyes. These three freshmen, especially Robles, played unbelievable ball for novices. Sonora High will field a potential championship team when these freshmen, along with others like Richard Miller and Don DeGiobbi, are seniors. Bucky Henington and Jerry MacDonald were the big scoring threats for the Kittens although Gary Robles and Bobo Leonard chipped in with more than their share and occasionally led the game scoring. Henington scored his points on his uncanny long shots while MacDonald piled up his total on his jump shots from the pivot. Mac had the highest individual game score when he hit for 23 points against Tracy. .g,, wi f! If m-z-K it-fr. Coach Art McGrath called it the coach's dream team. Why was it a dream team? Well, of the nine that started most of the games, only one was a senior. The Wildcats could field a championship contender ball club that consisted of one senior, three iuniors, four sophomores, and one freshman. In other words, Sonora would have veteran ball players coming back for the next three years from this year's team alone. What was their outlook for the current season? If you're optimistic, it was a good outlook. The 'Cats were certainly one of the three top teams in the league. How they finally ended up depended on how well Sonora's big guns with the bat came through. lf Bill Rang-ah- tang Buckman, Richard Nug Schoettgen, Roddy Hamilton, Greg Long, and Charlie Grossi came through with some timely hits, Sonora might have ended V.O.L. champs. lt is a known fact that juniors Greg Long, Mel Podesta, Harold Bucholz, and sophomore Lefty Delbar, gave Sonora the best and most complete pitching staff in the league.
