Dunlavy, the first meeting of the Student Body of Sonora Union High School was held in the auditorium on Monday morning, September ZO, 1943, with Cliff Minners assuming the President's chair. The need of Study Body and other organizations' dues was stressed by Commissioner of Finance Jack Sweeley. Under old business came the usual plea to let remain the lives of the Freshmen. Though redskins in appearance, they actually are human and deserve consideration. Scanning Secretary Dorothy Lyon's Minute Book we find the following record of varying events: A first, and victorious, game for the Sonora football squad was held on the local turf with Jackson. With October ZS as the appointed date an afternoon of fun and merri- ment was guaranteed by the Sophomore Class for the Freshman Recep- tion, at which the newcomers were the guests of honor-the theme Hallowe'en. A pleasing variety in the routine of life is the occasional celebration. An appropriate day for a general celebration was the Armistice Day Oakdale- Sonora football game in our stadium. Even though the game terminated with an Oakdale win, good sportsmanship prevailed throughout. In November, the successful junior Red Cross drive was climaxed by an afternoon of dancing with music furnished by the school's own 'fSynco- patorsf' Barbara Kress, Commissioner of Publicity, worked diligently for this worthy cause. Even with rationing the trend of the day, turkey and all the trimmings found their way to the American home's table. Thanksgiving vacation was short but provided enough time to overeat foods of red, blue and brown point value. December 10 presented the day for the annual Green and Gold spon- sored Faculty-Senior Basketball games. Enthusiasts witnessed the Fac- ulty Women edge out the Seniors by a one-point victory, while the Senior Boys defeated the Faculty Men by a margin of four points. Wilma Cullers, Commissioner of Publications, reported receipts of the evening most gratifying. ffWhy the Chimes Rang was impressively enacted to the students on December 22. Little further encouragement was needed to put the audi- ence into the Holiday spirit. HMERRY CHRISTMAS! 'Y Among the delightful tidbits that afforded variety and pleasure on cer- tain festal occasions was UTinsel Time,'l a seasonal holiday ball held in the Sonora Youth Center under the sponsorship of the seven new members of the Faculty. As a special feature on the local court a Nround robinw series of basket- ball games was staged by Calaveras, Ione and Sonora. Comes January 28 and the end of the semester- Some gentlemen, being very favorably impressed with a lady at first sight and having no immediate opportunity for introduction, make bold attempts to learn her name, but this being 1944 fand Leap Yearj the young ladies endeavored to learn his name first. Such were the circum- stances for the Leap Year Valentine Dance sponsored by the Girlsl League, with President Betty Burgess bestowing the timely hearts. The Girls, Athletic Association and President Lila Converse enthusias- tically helped the junior Aronos sponsor a grand variety show Febru- ary 24. Rose Resnick, noted blind pianist, came to us in February and gave one of the yearls outstanding programs. Our thanksito Betty Murray, Cultural Activities Commissioner, who secured this artist. March 11 came in like a lion and the basketball team won a lionls share of games, climaxing their record with the Championship of the Mother Lode. ' The much-talked-of Junior-Senior Basketball games pepped up Doug Wilson, Commissioner of Boys' Athletics, when he counted the proceeds and discovered the War Bond for the Boys' Athletic Association was Hin the bag. The Green and Gold presented to a full house 3 one-act plays-a stark gripping drama, a thrillerdiller murder mystery, and a hilarious comedy- together with several musical treats and an Easter parade Haunting the apparel and manners of the HGood Old Daysfl Don Dambacher, Boys' Service Club President, and Mickey McGuire, Commissioner of Public Welfare, aided and abetted Editor Margaret McConnell in putting over the entr'actes which caused so much hilarity. Triple Trio and Boys, Quar- tet warbled melodiously. April brought Open House and the Music Festival during Education NVeek, and May gave the Juniors their chance to shine as hosts to the Seniors at the Prom. Upholding his civic duties as Traffic Commissioner, Dunc Brinkerhoff kept the congested areas clear from office-seeking candidates for the Stu- dent Body positions and ruled that campaigning within fifty feet of the polls was illegal. Graduation-june 2 brought the coveted diplomas to the Seniors- some already in the service of our country. XE-DX9f'D 6'NQf'65 P X..9K'OX.9 LXGNQJ BUYS' SERVICE EI.
