N 1776, GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON unfuried the first unofficial emhiem of American inde- pendence, the Union Jack, a Hag which was used untii 1777, when the Continental Congress authorized the 'Stars and Stripes as our first official banner. This Hag had thirteen stars arranged in a circle, each star representing one of the thirteen reheiiing colonies. Legend has it that General Washington de- signed this Hag, and from his rough sicetch Betsy Ross made it, the only alteration being that oi using five-pointed stars instead of six- pointed ones. Q99
