SYMBOL or OUR NATION, our years of freedom as a united and independent nation. ln its broad folds lies the life blood of a mil- lion Americans who have died defending it. So little has been required ol us in payment for such a price- less heritage, when we consider the sacrifice our lore- fathers have made for it. At this time when our way of living has been threatened, we value our democracy more than we did in our thoughtless years. And so we feel it fitting that we should dedicate this year's annual to the American flag. On July 4, 1912, the states of Arizona and New Mexico were admitted to the Union, and Congress authorized the present day flag having thirteen alter- nate red and white stripes, and forty-eight white stars on a blue field. This Hag had thirteen stars arranged in a circle, each star representing one of the thirteen reheiiing colonies. Joumallsm Class cqafzlvifiaa HE YEAR 17Q5 SAW THE NUMBER ot stars and stripes increased to fifteen each. This Hag was used during the War ot 1812, and in- spired Francis Scott Key's 'Star Spangled Ban- ner. Key was a prisoner on a British Man-ot- War which was shelling Fort 1VIcHenry. All night the homharctment continuecl, and when the first rays of moming tight struct: the tort, Key saw the tattered American Hag still waving. ln his joy at this sight, he scritmhlect his memorable poem on the hack of an envelope. .55 f::!:, I Yfilgz.
