Epidemic Hits by Mike Phillips I would like to expose the dangers of o disease known as SENIOI -ITIS which hits unsuspecting seniors in epidemics each spring. Like the common cold, SENIORITI5 has no known cure. (Relief con be had only by staying home from school, making the drag, and drinking LOTS of liquids.) Although this disease is not one of the all-time, number-one killers, it has olreody token its toll of millions of seniors this year. Recent studies show that 95 percent of all senior high school students in America to- day hove contracted this disease. Most coses go unnoticed for a few months. Usually the student will show no symptoms until the lost months of school before grad uation. Symptoms include: loss of con- centration, drowsiness (from late night senior parties), and the majority of afflicted seniors may be observed wandering the holls in o delirious, euphoric state. Although this disease may seem harmless, some fatalities hove occurred. Studies show that nine out of ten fatalities ore the direct result of homework. That ' s right, folks, homework! By observation of loborotory seniors (who volunteered to get out of English), severol scientists con- clude that homework is harmful to one ' s health when odminstered in concentroted amounts. Thus, it is my firm belief thot homework should be outlawed during the final semester of the senior year. It is also my firm belief that the following message should be printed on every twelfth-grade textbook: WARNING: The Surgeon General of the United States has determined that homework is hazardous to the health dur- ing the final semester of your senior year. I also believe that it should be unlawful for teachers to assign research papers term papers, book reports, independent projects and the like. Offenders should be tried as felons, and punished by ten years to life in the school cafeteria during the elementary lunch period or to the electric choir — or both.
