Also popular are Talking T Shirts. Boys care how they look and keep their hair blow-dry styled and neatly cut, perhaps feath- ered into wings and bangs. Both sexes wear the short curly Fro style. Girls wear their hair short and curly or feathered into wings at the side with hair either short or long. With the hair, as with clothes, styles are very flexible. Dress lengths are nearly anywhere from below the knees to ballerina length. The slim skirt with side, front or back slits is popular, and terry or shiny knits are good. The shirt-waist is in. Dresses are feminine and belted. Colors are brighter and bolder than last year ' s dusty tones. The casual look is in for spring — skirts and shirts with bare legs and sandals. Shoes are very feminine and pretty, some with slim, low or medium heels and others with spikes. Ankle straps are popular. The comfort- able Famolare is still a favorite. The pleated, belted pant with slim legs is com- ing back — the baggy look of the 50 ' s. Double-pierced ears and ear rings are still fashionable. The serpentine gold chain worn about the neck is big with boys and girls alike. Digital watches are now competing with the highly accurate Seiko type quartz watch. W m ' fr ' li I H l.. Disco and punk rock were going out — Country Western music still going strong. Popular musical groups included: Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Styx, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Little Joe y la familia, and Latin Band. Meetings were held in the individual classes and programs con- sisted of stories, reports and games in Spanish. A special event was the Christmas meeting held at the Commercial Cafe so the members could enjoy a typical Mexican meal. On another occasion, Mr. Sam Perez, President-elect of the School board, visited the club and pointed out the advantages of being bilingual and urged all students to take advantage of their oppor- tunities. The 1979 football season began in a sad way with the untimely and tragic death of star Joey Kirby after one week of practice. The demoralized Bronco team struggled through the early season handicapped by inexperi- ence and injuries. After five games the Broncos had managed only two victories. The spirited Broncos turned the season around, however, winning four of the last five games. The highlights of the season were a stunning upset of highly regarded Cathedral and a thrilling near comeback win against Kermit in the district championship game. SCHEDULE Sonora 6 Ballinger 26 Sonora 31 Big Lake Sonora 7 Kerrville 6 Sonora 12 Ozona Sonora 15 Brady Sonora 41 Big Lake Sonora 26 Junction 8 Sonora 2 Ozona 6 The Colts eighth grade team had an outstanding season with a 6-2 record. After suffering a 26 to 6 defeat in their first game against Ballinger, the Colts went on to win six consecutive games, allowing the opponents only two touchdowns while scoring 132 points. The final game of the season was a very hard fought loss to Ozona 6-2, with an apparent touchdown ruled out at the one yard line. The leading rushers for the Colts were Terry Vickers, Jay Thomas, and Tino Martinez. Other backs who contributed greatly were Eugene Gonzales and Tony Garza, One of the bright spots in the Colt season was the out- standing quarterback play of Jeff Brittain. Jeff had a very suc- cessful passing year, thanks to help from receivers such as Mike Polocek, Matt Favila, Eugene Gonzales, Jay Thomas, and Tino Martinez. The offensive line that did such a fine job of opening holes for backs along with an excellent pass protection included: Houston Powers at center, Ronnie Pollard and Adam Hernan- dez at guards, with Jerry Jimenez and Rodney Jones at tackles. The Colts had a very outstanding defense also, headed by nose-guard, Ronnie Pollard. Ronnie was the leading tackier and seemed to be on every defensive tackle made. Other bright spots on the defensive line were; Rodney Jones, Adam Hernan- dez at tackles and defensive ends Terry Vickers and Barry Graves. Jeff Brittain and Tino Martinez did an excellent job at linebacker. The secondary was solid and did not allow a touch- down through the air the entire season. They included Mike Polocek and Jay Thomas at corners, with Tony Garza and Eugene Gonzales at safeties. The Colts enjoyed a very successful season, and Sonora fans should enjoy some very fine football in the future. Managers were David Love and Doug Mounce, and coaches were Oliver West and Virgil Burge. 148 Colt cheetleadefs Kathy Doran Rebecca Powers Anita Balch Kathryn Parker Judy Merrill KristyHill The 1979 seventh grade Colts scored eight victories on their way to an undefeated season. The boys had the desire to win and the talent necessary to accomplish their goal. They practiced hard, never satisfied with the previous week ' s win. The line showed exceptional intelligence and strength, and the backfield consistently capitalized on the opportunities the line provided. With continued determina- tion and drive, these young men will bring home many more victories for Sonora.
