Playing against creditable teams, the Broncos scored 165 points with the offense passing for 595 yards and the defense rushing for 2113 yards. s 1,-1-sw.x,sg ,, V... . . K. It took more than just dedicated players to make a team as great as the Broncos. Head Coach Bill Bundy and Coaches Roland Pfeiffer and Tommy Miller trained the team in football techniques. Among the many activities planned for boosting school spirit were selling rib- bons, putting up spirit signs, and holding a special 1950's pep rally. Coaches Tommy Miller and Dale Ethridge worked with the junior varsity boys to make a great season. These boys worked and practiced long, hard hours for the privilege of playing and gaining experi- ence for future years in Bronco basketball. l L.-Yfwra The golf team, coached by Mr. Dale Ethridge, placed third in dis trict competition. The varsity team was composed of Larry Finklea John Elliott, John David Cook, Gregg Tedford, and Scott Alley. The junior varsity, composed of Larry Butler, Tommy Wood, Lucy Mor riss, and Jimmy Black, participated in district competition and other tournaments. ,, f ,fi 'f ' Tenni The tennis team coached by Mr Ben Solis, participated in severa dual matches and tournaments The team made a good showin at the district tournament wit several players advancing to th semi-finals and finals. Benn Granger was first in the B Divi sion and Gary Kuykendall wa third in the A Division. warm, 43 Track The track team, with the help of Coach Roland Pfeiffer and Donald Patton won many first place trophies as well as tak- ing the District 6AA Champi- onship with 161 points. The boys did extremely well and took home over 12 medals with many of the boys qualify- ing for regional in more than one event. if fix Will Wallace received 5 medals at district while qualifying for regional in 4 events. Larry Jones received 3 medals and also qualified for regional where he placed fifth in the 120 yard high hurdles. Chip Savell placed second in the mile at district and fifth at regional, while Robbie Hard took the first place medal in the Pole Vault. Jimmy Waters placed first in the 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash and ran on winning the 440 yard dash. The freshmen track team did excep- tionally well in winning the Ballinger and Del Rio Track Meets. The l.V. competed in the Ozona Invitational Meet only to become champs. There is no doubt that all these boys worked hard and they deserve recognition for a great season. Q f I Each new member of the year- book staff discovered the hard work involved in the prepara- tion of the Bronco. Selling ads, deciding on the layout and the design of the year- book, and rushing to meet deadlines were tasks of every staff member. Editor Janna Lawson and assistant editor Suzanne Dillard aided the staff in capturing the events of the year. Yearbook Staff f,:mm..,, W Student Council The Student Council, the students' form of government within the school, played an important role on our campus. Through this organi- zation, elected representatives of the classes and clubs were able to voice their opinions about matters concerning the student body. The Student Council sponsored the Halloween Carnival, collected toys and food for families in the community, and gave the All-School Dance. President Will Wallace presided at the council meetings and assemblies of the student body. Other officers were Vice-President, Tony Mathews, Secretary, Mary Sue Galindo. Mr. Bob Snodgrass was the organization's sponsor. Their many projects for the year included a booth at the Halloween Carnival, a remodeling of the girls' lounge, and a Christmas caroling party. if .....- -7 .L Several members, accompanied by sponsor Mrs. Celeste Prugel, attended the Area II Meeting in Odessa. The group presented a skit on the California Gold Rush and Natalie Redman and Susan Dunnam sang in the choir. At the installation tea held in late spring, incoming officers and the mothers of FHA members were honored. Senior members were also presented gifts at this time. Margie Gutierrez was recognized as FHA Sweetheart and Mario Duran was honored as FHA Beau. For the first time, a Sonora Student held an area office with Mary Sue Galindo serv- ing as Area Fourth Vice-President. The Tournament, with 24 schools participating, was a tre- mendous success. Central High School of San Angelo took the Sweep- stakes Trophy. Other activities of the Speech Club included a ham- burger supper at the home of speech director Edwina Braden and a for- mal banquet given at the Sutton County Steak house. Officers were President, Mike Streetg Vice-President, Scott Alley: Secretary, Janna Lawsong and Reporter, Lorie Olson. Sonora High School's speech and drama students produced The Enchanted by Jean Giraudoux as their one-act play which was presented at district competition in Big Lake. The fifteen cast members and director Edwina Braden worked long hours to per- fect their performance. Crew members Mike Street, Suzanne Dillard and Gary Wuest contrib- uted greatly by working lights, collecting props and making sure all things were present and in working order. At district com- petition Becky Ponsetti, John Mormon, and Robert Mounce received positions on the All- Star Cast. Toyah Jones, Lianna Mandy and Craig Hudson received honorable mention for their performances. '1i.2r':l. fl VXXX and 4-in- W Fellowship of Christian Athletes The Fellowship of Christian Ath- letes gave both girl and boy ath- letes an opportunity to grow closer to God. Their motto, I Am Third, means Christ is first, my fellowman is second, and I am third. Coach Bill Bundy was sponsor of the organi- zation. Officers were Captain, John Elliottg Captain Elect, David Snodgrassg and Secretary- Treasurer , Jane Wallace . Under the sponsorship of Coach Oliver Wuest, the members of the Industrial Arts Club are pro- vided with opportunities for gaining experience in personal leadership and for developing interest in industrial arts, engi- neering, and vocational educa- tion. For the first time, several girls joined the male members in their activities. Members of the board who directed the club activities were Tony Mathews, Gregg Parker, Jimmy Black, John David Cook, and Kelly Estep. Industrial Arts oo!-45 Ham-1 Newspaper Staff This year the newspaper under- went some major changes. The name was changed to Caballo Diablo, which means devilish horse. A dedication and gossip section were fun to read and increased student interest. The new sponsor, Miss Karen Beau- champ, had many other ideas which were put into action by editor Lorie Olson and her staff. Typists working hard to make sure the paper came out on time were Paula Monroe, Toyah Jones, and Suzanne Dillard. Art- ists Tom Valliant and Will Wal- lace designed many attractive covers. T' The blazing red and brilliant white uniforms of the Bronco band displayed school spirit at football games, concerts, and contests. In the fall, Jane Wallace was crowned Band Sweetheart at football half- time activities. The band competed in UIL marching and sight reading contests in November and presented the annual Christmas concert in December. Bronco Band M In the spring, band members competed in UIL solo and ensemble competition. Scott Alley, Donna Schaffner, Terri Simpler, Stephen Terry, and Gary Wuest earned membership in the All-Regional Band. During the Spring Concert, several band members were recognized by Mr. Don Paul, band director. Donna Schaffner was cited as Honor Band Student and Rebecca Sisk received the Band Citizenship Award. The John Philip Sousa Award was presented to Denita Mobley. Gary Wuest, who served the band as drum major, received the Spirit Award. t i .pg ,f i --t, 2313. Af Twirl ers The twirlers for the Bronco band were Joyce Noriega, Jane Wal- lace, Flaire Lane, Becky Cava- ness, and head twirler Lucy Mor- riss. After long hours of practic- ing routines, the twirlers proudly led the band down the field and performed special shows for the Bronco fans. The Girls' Athletic Association, sponsored by Mrs. Gwen Kordzik, was busy putting up signs and making locker stickers during football season. Members sold football programs and sponsored the cake walk at the Halloween Carnival to raise money to send the cheerleaders to camp. As a special project, the club collected Betty Crocker coupons to buy plates to be used at different school events. Officers were Pres- ident, Martha Elliottg Vice-President, Bernice Streetg and Secretary- Treasurer, Terri Simpler. E iff 2 Girls' Athletic Association Future Teacher of Amerie The FTA, an organization that helps prepare students to work with others as teachers, contributed a valuable service to the elementary faculty. Members of the organization worked as teacher assistants, helping students with school subjects and aiding teachers in grading papers and in doing other daily tasks. Officers were President, Lorie Olsong Vice-President, Gary Wuestg Secretary, Janie Welchg Parlia- mentarian-Historian, Jo Hanusg and Treasurer, Becky Ponsetti. Mrs. Charlotte Wilson sponsored the organization. as Librar Assistants The library assistants were busy during the year maintaining library records, checking out books, and keeping magazines ready for student use. These stu- dents also helped Miss Karen Beauchamp organize and operate the library's newest service-- audio visual equipment and materials. 252 Office 8: Counselofs Assistants The office assistants stayed busy throughout the year keeping school files and absentee records in order. With the increased enrollment, they were a big help to the secretary, Mrs. Wanda Cook. The coun- selor's assistants were a new addition to the school. They helped Mrs. Jeryl Fields provide information for students interested in continuing their education . Distributive Educati Clubs Uf Americ DECA, a new and active organization on campus, provided its m bers with opportunities for working in the community and for lean about the responsibilities of being an employee. Activities for year included the fruit sale, a trip to Six Flags, and the Horror at the Halloween Carnival. Afer a busy year of magazine sales, the Halloween Carnival concession booth, government class, and English IV . they were ready to have some fun. On May 21, thirty-four seniors and four sponsors traveled to New Braunfels for a day of swimming, boating, and six- foot long sandwiches. Under the supervision of Mrs. Patsy Schwiening, the cafeteria workers served the hungry stu- dents of Sonora. Mr. Max Harde- gree, maintenance supervisor, and his crew worked hard to keep the buildings and equipment in good condition. The custodians, under the supervision of Mr. Edward Carrasco, kept the cam- pus clean and neat. With the help of these people, our school was kept running smoothly throughout the year.
