Glaese, A. L. Ford, R. Hotz, H. Coops, S. C. Mitchell, Mrs. P. Mulford, D. A. Pfeiffer. The Board of Trustees for Sonoma Valley Union High School consists of five members who are elected for a three year term. They are the main governing body of the school, and their iob is an important one. They make the rules and regu- lations for the school, and they make the deci- sions on all important issues. They have been kept on their toes this past year because of the construction work that has, and is, being done, they have done a wonderful iob in sometimes difficult and trying circumstances. Sonoma Valley Union High School District will remember the work done by this present board for years to come. PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION-Left to right: Mrs. Van Es, Mrs. Cummings, Mrs. Griewe, Mrs. Wil- Iiams, Mrs. Lanning, Mrs. Graves, Mr. Glaese, Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Oakes. Because of the significant and challenging theme of 1954, Opportunity Unlimited, we readily concede that an attempt to accomplish this must reach out into the years. We desire un- limited opportunity for all high school students to the degree of pressing into existence a partner- ship of parents, educators and citizens, who will sincerely seek the highest good of these young people-their limitless opportunity. 5 XVQJIP Pleasurable recollections of this past ,year are the well-attended meetings at which parents, fac- ulty and students shared viewpoints and came to amicable understanding in matters pertaining to discipline, the grading system, chaperonage at school functions, and the morals of high school students in general-all of these contributing to the determined goal. MRS. PETER VAN ES, President Teachers found the silent moving picture valuable as an educational aid. Its value was multiplied many times by the addition of sound. The combina- tion of radio and video in television will supplement the work of the teach- er. lt will bring to the classroom ex- periences, materials, or demonstrations that are not readily available to the classroom teacher. Television, a mechanical device, can never replace the reality of the class- room, where one mind meets another to create thought, where a person learns group adiustments, where he can feel the warmth of friendship. DOROTHY GODWARD !'. -2 ml Kfi DAVID PFEIFFER Dean of Boys, Vice Principal Oregon State, B.S. DOROTHY GODWARD Dean of Girls University oi California, B.A., M.A. Junior Engineer Last fall everyone in school looked forward to better conditions after con- struction work on the buildings was completed, and were not disappointed when the time arrived. Similarly, 'the construction period' of a high school student's career may seem difficult, but if he builds well while in school, he should look for- ward to a better future with confi- dence. H BILL SANDERS I ,X if ., WILMA FABRIS 'trim OFFICERS-Left to right: Jim Marengo, vice president, Wilma Fabris, secretary, Dick Griffin, president. eadafz As Freshmen, in the fall of 1951, the class of 1954 was the largest in the history of S.V.U.H.S. On the sixth of October the annual Freshman Dress Up Day brought out our class dressed as comic and mythical characters. Among the annual activities of this class was the presentation of pep rallies to the Student Body. Junior Varsity was the skit put on when they were Frosh. An Out-of- Date Car Ride to a basketball game was a hilarious pantomime presented as Sophomores. When Juniors, they presented The Death of a Ukiah Football Player which helped our football team slaughter Ukiah. ln the last of our four years, a different idea was initiated. What's My Line, composed of a panel of Senior students, guessed fictional occupations of four faculty members. The class presented a dance for the Student Body each year with the exception of our first year when a party was given to us by the Seniors. When Sophomores, we originated Candyland in early spring with a large number of students at tending. ln our third year the dream of all Junior classes came to us-that of pre- senting the biggest and most spectacular highlight of the school year. The Love- Iiest Night of the Year was the name of the Senior Ball given for the Class of 1953. Leading the class during the seventh and final semesters of our high school years were Dick Griffin, president, Jim Marengo, vice president, Wilma Fabris, secretary, Jo Ann Baccaglio and Charlie DeMartini, student council, Ruth Rose Campbell, Bud Geisner, and Francis Frago, welfare, and Helen Lanning and Peggy Tucker acting as cheerleaders for the class as well as for the Student Body. The Senior class advisors were Miss Kelly, Mrs. Armstrong, Mr. Frapwell, Mr. Sharek, and Mr. Livingston, 1 T c,. .A 64' Qs. alles ..... .. O I ffl ffl I I' IT1 JP U l'l'l I U! I The Class of 1955 is the largest class in the student body. This year their main proiect was the Senior Ball. They worked hard raising the necessary funds for the gala affair and put a lot of time, thought, and effort into the entertainment and decorations. Their second objective this year was student body offices. Everyone tried to get high grades for the purpose of running for one of the high offices of the school next term. There were big campaigns, posters which livened up the halls, and campaign promises which made everyone think that the Student Government was going to be completely reorganized when they were installed as officers. The Juniors participate in many student activities. 'Many of them belong to clubs, and many are officers of these clubs. You can always be certain that you will see a large group of Juniors at all the games and other school doings. The iob of heading this activity fell to Gerald LeLesch, president, Gene Dorn- bush, vice president, Susan Biggs, secretary, Reneene Valla and Ed Smith, student council, Florence Bonaudi and Jo Ann Twyman, cheerleaders, Elizabeth Tubbs, Suzanne Fishbeck, and Bob Kyle, welfare. Assisting these officers were Mr. Loucks, Mr. Costello, Mr. Siwan, and Mrs. Johnson who acted as class advisors. ADVISORS-Left to right: H. Loucks, H. Costello, W, Siwan, A. Johnson fseatedl. The Sophomores also sponsored a pep rally, a basketball concession, the Sophomore Hop, and participated in the annual Yell Contest. Aiding the president as class officers were the following: Don Watson, vice president, Marilyn Audiss, secretary, and cheerleaders, Susan Bland and Mary Lou Johnson. Representing the Sophs on the student council were Shirley Knapp and Dan Taylor, and the welfare members were Ted Clark, Ed McCahon and Jim Sweet. The Sophomore boys were active in athletics and many of them found spots on the varsity squads. The class advisors-Mr. Noonan, Mr. Shatto, Mr. Heppe, Mr. Scrimger, and Mrs. Schroeder lent many a helping hand when counsel was necessary. CHEERLEADERS-Michelette Polidori, Pat Pensar, and ADVISQRS,-Lefg fo righh C. Belden, M. Del-Ong N Doris Graves. Lavers, G. Jensen, G. Koche. The first activity of the Freshman class of '57, was the election of officers. The results of which were as follows: Joey Cossins, president, Ray Maxwell, vice president, Janet Draper, secretary, Judy Valentine, treasurer, Katy Hill and Marvin Burtson, student council, Dave Shipnuck and Ersula Bruhn, welfare, Mich- elette Polidori, Doris Graves, and Pat Pensar, cheerleaders. The Class of '57 has many promising athletes in its ranks. Some of the boys have played J.V. football and won their blocks, others have won their blocks in C basketball. The first year of high school has been a great year for all of us. It has been one not soon to be forgotten. We started our first term in partitioned classrooms in the new shop building, and just when we were becoming oriented to this situation, we moved back into the remodeled main building. We made many new friends among our own class and with the upperclassmen. A concession at a basketball game was one of the very successful activities presented by the Freshman class. Looking over all our memories of Frosh days, we can say that our first year of secondary education will be one that will not be easily forgotten. Every car which is regularly on the school grounds must be checked for all safety regulations. lf passed, the car owner is given a sticker which must be displayed on the car's back rear window. lf the car does not con- form to the safety regulations, it is restricted from the school grounds. The committee also enforces traffic regulations which were set up last year. The Pep Club, although not an actual branch of the student- government, is a great asset to the student body. This group is responsible for the rallies, stunts, and decorations at the games. STUDENT BODY OFFICERS-Front row, left to right: G. Davitto, Treasurer, P. Clark, Pep Chairman, W. Garrison, Bailiff. This year the EL PADRE staff, under the direc- torship of Mr. DeLong, is working under a' new system. The majority of the staff has been as- sembled in a morning Journalism class. This has made it possible for them to meet regularly and to iron out many problems which would other- wise cause time consuming delays. Among their yearly activities, the El Padre staff has given a rally and a spring dance for the stu- dent body. Work on each individual project has been delegated to various committees. These com- mittees have helped to speed the progress of the El Padre, and make each undertaking a success. Although this year, as well as preceding years, come June a large number of the staff will be leaving, there has been increasing interest shown by the underclassmen. Their work and efforts are shown throughout the book. Without everyone's co-operation it would have been almost impos- sible to have the book published and ready for distribution in early June. It is a paper pro- duced by the 'aspiring Journalism class under the watchful eye and helpful hand of Mr. DeLong. Presented to the student body about twice a month, the DRAGON'S TALE has come a long way this year. With Reneene Valla and Joe Baetge acting as co-editors during the first semester, the eight page edition contained features, girls' and boys' sports, music, club, school, and class news, and with a new addition, the crossword puzzle. For second semester editor, Chuck Backhus was chosen. Page editors were selected from the able Journalism class. It was these editors who saw that their various staffs wrote articles for the paper. The editors then presented these items to the chief editor, who, in turn, took care of plac- ing the articles, on the four-page printed publica- tion in their proper form. At that time, however, these clubs were only separate high school organizations. Eventually, they were united and in 1928, the first National Convention was held. The national clubs assumed the name Future Farmers of America or F. F. A. The F. F. There are four classi- fications in F. F. A. membership. First is the Greenhand or the new member. Second is the Chapter farmer. The Chapter farmer must have made S150 from his proiect. The State farmer must make S500 from his project. Last is the American farmer, and the requirement for this is a profit of 51,000 on a proiect. Each year our chapter sends two delegates to the state convention at California State Poly- technic at San Luis Obispo. In the past we have sent delegates to the National Convention at Kansas City. Noonan, Sonoma's Dragons faced stiffer competition this football season that ever before. This was due to the fact that the sectional standing of many schools in the league was changed this year. After this revision, Sonoma found itself facing such powerful teams as Analy, Healdsburg, San Rafael, and Petaluma. During a four game practice schedule before the regular season the Dragons won one game and lost three. 1953 saw the Dragons in a moderately suc- cessful football season with two wins against two losses in a four game league schedule. The roster of this year's team is composed of Freshmen and Sophomores who, through Junior Varsity experience, hope to become members of the Varsity team in future years. This means that a boy who has not reached the age of I6 is not yet eligible for Varsity ball, but they are invited to .gain experience and better knowledge of the game by playing J.V. football. This year's team was unable to get rolling, as they dropped all but one game, which ended in a tie with Healdsburg. The defeats came at the hands of Analy, Tomales, Calistoga VARSITY, and Drake. This year's J.V. team was much better than the scores indicated. Coaches Costello of the J.V. and Edsall of the Varsity expect many of this season's J.V. boys to prove themselves valuable Varsity material. A BASKETBALL Landing in fourth place with a tie in league competition with a i-7 win-loss record, the Dragons' Varsity basketballers, coached by George Koche, did not have a successful season. If experience and height are the requisites for a successful basketball team, then this was the cause for our lack of success this past season. Much experience had been gained this season, and we feel certain that our Varsity cagers will be among the winners next season. Even though the team fought to the last second in every game, they finished the season with eight wins against thirteen losses. Mr. Koche has stated, This was the finest bunch of boys I have ever coached and they gave their best in every game. The team was composed of three Seniors and eight Juniors. They are as follows: Gary Ellison, captain, Bill Sanders, Bill Martindale, Ron Howard, Rodney Howard, Herb Colby, Rich Coleman, Paul Friedricksen, Barry Maslin, Gene Dornbush, and Bob Sangiacome. .,,. M' If g Fielding a strong and experienced basketball team, coached by Howard Costello, the B's opened league play facing tough competition this year. Under the revised Section Il of the N.B.L., the B's downed such teams as: Analy, Petaluma, San Rafael, and Healdsburg. The defeats were not many but the scores indicate lust how close the games were. Led by Walt Tyler, captain, the quintet was able to win twelve out of eighteen games played. The Championship team was composed of: Walt Tyler, Don Watson, Bruce Griewe, Charlie Cadle, Billy Kahrs, Earl Cosma, Ron ,Dunlap, Earl Duncan, Gene Sperring, John McKenna, Herb Taylor, and Jim Duckett. Congratulations, fellas, Sonoma is proud of you. With this record you became the first team in the new Section Il to share a Championship berth in the North Bay League. ,.
