Kennedy Library. Gover- nor Harnman has had a prestigious political career that has spanned over four decades, and continues to be an influential force in the Democratic Party today Governor Harnman and his wife were lunch guests at the High School They were met at the airport and escorted to the school by Edward Murray, head of the social studies department, and guidance counselor Rosemarie Hrubi. Governor Harnman addressed some 1500 students and faculty members during an assembly Following a short speech. Novem- ber 13. 1979, to perform for English students his one ‱ man show, Vachel Lindsay Enters Into Heaven.” In the show, which Knight presented in New York, Washington, and other parts of the country, the actor assumed the personality of the American poet and read many of his poems, occasionally inviting audience participation. Knight, who studied at U.Mass Amherst. has appeared often in films, on the stage, and in many television shows, including Police Story”, Chico and the Man”, and “The Rockford Files”. He co ‱ starred with Dom Deluise in the comedy Lotsa Luck”. He is also frequently seen in television commericals. SHS drama students met with Knight and interviewed him about his career. UNSUNG HEROS Somerville's Pride Hold Their Heads Up High It isn't very often that a whole school becomes involved in one team's playoff efforts, but that was the case for the Somerville High School soccer team The team was cheered on by many Somer- ville High supporters as they faced Beverly in the first game of the Northern Mass Finals Both teams had tough defensive lines, so the game became a battle of the offense At the end of regula- tion time, the game stood scoreless. Then, over time, again no score; double overtime, scoreless. Then, in sudden death. Beverly brought the ball down to the Somerville end. and put the ball by the far right of Somerville goalie Tom Bullock Beverly left the field victorious, but Somerville had reason to be proud of being the GBL Champs, and of having had one of the best seasons the team has ever had ■ hair’is the faculty What do you mean, against the dress code5' We want Santa We want Santa! For Coach Phil Vaccaro, it was a replay of previous winning sea- sons, of hoping for more than just a fabulous record, but another shot at the championship. A combination of boys who played the best game they could the only way they knew how; play?rs like halfbacks Sergio Sessa and Donald Toussaint, forewards Sergio Buttaro, and Luis Cabral, fullbacks Carlos Homen and Bobby DeFabrizio, along with goalie Tom Bullock, maintained a first place position throughout the season Somerville High has the privilege of rooting for a consistently winning and always exciting team. The defensive team couldn’t hold back the opposition, and the of- fense just couldn’t seem to break through to the end zone. Coach Rick Cash pulled his team to- gether many times after discouraging losses, but despite talk, encourage- ment, and practice, the 1979-80 sea- son left much to be desired. Captains Tommy Hartnett, Billy Ab- bott, and Steve Dangora worked with starting quarterback Mike Slattery, and starters Dave DeCologero, Nick Solomini, and Brennan Hairston, who did their best to post a win. But most of the season was filled with disap- pointment for the team and the school combined. Although the season wasn’t filled with positive feelings, the Somerville High fans went to every game to root their team to victory. Fourth Row A. Hodgkins. A. Fuller. M Wilson. G. Tolly, S. There was a record turnout at Arlington High School to see the annual Somerville- Arlington clash The majority of spectators waved Somerville banners, and were in for a treat. The Highlanders had their fans on their feet in the first half. First and goal at the two. Somerville running back Brennan Hairston scored on a pass from quarterback Gary Tolley with 3:04 remaining in the half. The extra point attempt was blocked, but Somer- ville left the field leading by six. At 3:28 of the third quarter, again the High- landers called on Hairston, who ran for a 20 yard carry to the 10 yard line. From there it was strictly academic A perfect hand-off to the sophomore running back who ran wide open in the end zone. Suddenly. Somerville led by twelve. Gerry Knight, coach of the team, worked out the plays and encouraged his team to pass off and wait for the ideal scoring opportunities. An unself- ish starting line-up, with boys like Mike Slattery and Mark Moran, continued to surprise the GBL with a consistantly winning season. The Highlanders had one of the best lines in the state, with Jim O’Meara, Tom Walsh, and Mike Maclnnes. They alone were in the top six in scoring in the GBL. Two of the best penalty kill- ers in the league, Dave DeCologero, and Mike Hamilton, were essential in moving the puck around, and gave people like right wing Alan Hodgkins the chance to score and keep the fans on their feet. Their ways of scoring were effective, and on the average, stick handling was at its best. Their goals were simple: to get more than 28 points to qualify for, and possibly win. the GBL champion- ship. 15.? In this time he conducted hundreds of C.Y.O. activities, but found time to attend hundreds of school athletic events. His opinion was highly regarded by sports enthusiasts.
