March 18. 1979, five separate fires were discovered burning in Somerville High School; members of the senior class faced the third major disruption of their school life in as many years. The three-alarm blaze hit hardest in the central building, where six senior homerooms were put out of commission for the remainder of the school year, as well as the faculty cafeteria and school store. 99 Robert Wilson photo â courtesy of Somerville Journal. SOCCER SENSATIONAL SOMERVILLE SOCCER The SHS Soccer team enjoyed its' finest season ever this year. The team reached the Eastern Mass. Semi-Finals, where they lost to a strong New Bedford team. Our soccermen won the G.B.L. this year finishing the regular sea- son with a 13-1-0 record. The super offense of the SHS squad kept this team on top. Sen- sational Andy Holmes was the big scorer for this year, breaking all G.B.L. records for goals scored in the 14 game season. Andy scored 38 goals and had 14 assists. AI Melo and Sergio Buttaro were behind Holmes with 8 and 7 goals respectively. Icelandic David Ar- nar. who came into the season with 6 games left, came up with 6 quick goals to add immense- ly to the talent of this superb team. Captain Jose Fernandes, who led his team through a very fine season, scored twice and had 14 assists. Victor Silva and Mike Scimemi held up the SHS defense with Tom- my Bullock goaltending safely behind them. He racked up an amazing 8 shutout season plus 2 shutouts in the tourney. Seven of our boys were named to the G.B.L. All-Star Team. They are seniors Captain Jose Fernan- des. Andy Holmes. Al Melo. Mike Scimemi. Victor Silva, and jun- iors Tommy Bullock and Sergio Buttaro. V' âCC .-â ⢠34 Booters Reach State Semi Finals SHS ADVANCES TO STATE SEMIâS The SHS Soccermen advanced to tourney play once again. Somerville demolished West Roxbury by a score of 5-0 in the first round of the tourney. Andy Holmes scored three times while Sergio Buttaro and Al Melo added one goal each. This victory advanced the booters to Boston University's Nickerson Field, for the quar- ter final-round. SHS beat Brain- tree 1-0, with Al Melo scoring the only goal. From there, the team went to the semi-final to play New Bedford in the Lynn Manning Bowl. But this was as far as the soccermen got. losing 3-0 to a strong New Bedford team. FOOTBALL For the fourth consecutive season Somerville High Football was faced with a new coach. Coach Rick Cash had been with the Highlanders pre- viously as an assistant coach: but now he had to be head coach. Coach Cash had a tough act to follow con- sidering the great season SHS had in '77 with Coach John Nunziato. Coach Cash was determined to try his very best. Having lost most of the '11 squad to graduation, SHS found much com- petition going against Peabody in game 1 of the '78 season. The SHS spirit still continued to brew throughout the season antici- pating a win in the future. A rainy day game at Chelsea proved that a win was not far off. But SHS lost a 7-6 heartbreaker after Chelsea block- ed an SHS punt. Yet SHS was not to be let down. A strong defensive line, led by co-captains Ken Gale and Mike Gobiel. played well against Medford. '78 Super Bowl champs. A number of injuries throughout the season hampered the offensive lineâs scoring possibilities. With many injured players on the sidelin- es. the SHS gridiron was able to pull through with a 15-13 win over Revere. The only game left to play was again- st Arlington on Thanksgiving Day. Finish Season 1-8-0 Thanksgiving Day Rally Thanksgiving Day Game This years Thanksgiving Day game was played on a snow covered Dilboy Field in 28° weather. The usual large crowd gathered for the rival Somerville- Arlington game. Neither team had the strong contending rec- ord they had the previous year. There was no scoring other than Arlingtonâs lone touch- down in the 2nd quarter. Somer- villeâs longest drive occured in the 1st quarter when SHS advanced from the SHS 20 to the Arlington 35 in a series of six plays. A pass caught by Ernie Needham on the 50 yard line gave SHS a first down. Both teams fought hard to gain yardage on each play only to be stopped by penalties, fumbles, and incomplete passes that took their toll. The score remained 6-0 Arlington for the rest of the game, ending a tough SHS gridiron season. GIRLSâ CROSS-COUNTRY Kneeling: D. Deveraux. Co-Capt. P. Giampa. Co-Capt. J. Moran. M Tivinis. Led by Co-Cap- tains Patti Giampa and Joyce Moran, the girls participated in eight dual meets, the Bonne Bell Road Race, So- merville Road Race. Northern Area Meet. Bedford Invitational, and the State Meet. During the entire season only 30 points separated the team from having a 7-1 record. A 3-2 win over Arlington boosted the boysâ hopes of tourney play: how- ever. as the season progressed, a com- bination of seven wins, four losses, and four ties slimmed their chances for a post-season playoff spot. Despite this, their hopes were kept alive by a late season win over Medford (5-2), and the squad went on to face their last four regular-season games with renewed hope. Kneeling: T. Maisano. J. The Somerville Boys' basketball team had one of its most impressive seasons, led by tri-cap- tains Wayne Hascom. Hank Landers, and Dan Mitchell. The SHS quintet made up of veteran players put everything together this year to defeat the 1978 G.B.L. champs. Peabody, in game three of the season. SHS continued its winning record upsetting Chelsea 53-52 with a shot by Chris Burgholzer with only a few sec- onds remaining in the game. Two games later SHS faced a similar situation against Medford. For the past few years SHS never seemed to be able to beat the Mustangs at Medford. This year was no exception. SHS played well through- out the entire game and was ahead by six points with a little more than a minute left on the clock. But SHS was not destined to win. The Mus- tangs came from behind with field goals and foul shots to give SHS a heartbreaking 54-53 loss, the first loss of the season. Despite this loss SHS continued playing well defeating third place Peabody once more The squad was now only two wins from qualifying for the Tech Tourney. And Somerville won its next two games against Malden and Haverhill to qualify for the tournament with a 14-1 record with five more games to be played in the season before advancing to the tourney. 163 Finish Season 18-2 GIRLSâ BASKETBALL Kneeling: C. McGomgle. C. Marques. C. Harvey. J. Joyce. E. Stanford. D. Jones. Standing: J. OiPanfilo. J. Wagner. Capt J. Moran, head coach B. Whittle. J. Lynch. C. Wells. S. Cross. Coach Barbara Whittleâs quintet led by captain Joyce Moran, looked for- ward to their first game versus Everett with enthusiasm. After losing the sea- son opener to Everett, the girls knew that they could make a comeback by beating Revere in the next game, which is exactly what they did. Lack of height prevented the SHS girls from having a better season. But there were many other surprising fac- tors which brightened up a somewhat disappointing season. Senior Joyce Moran, in a game vs. Revere, netted 23 points for a career high. In a very tight game vs. Malden. Senior Cathy Harvey had a career high of 19 points. Seniors Cheryl Marques and Julie Joyce rounded out the start- ing five along with junior Carol Wells. Cheryl Marques had a fine season by contributing many necessary outside points. No doubt that graduation will hurt Coach Whittle's team as other departing seniors are Elaine Stanford and Joan DiPanfilo. But Coach Whittle is looking forward to a fine season next year since more than half of the team will be returning. 165 Finish Season 5-11 167 ANDY 168 PHONE 776-0716 337 SOMERVILLE AVENUE SOMERVILLE.
