There is no place like here. There is no time like now. But those three years were once in a lifetime. 3 Friendship is like a phosphorescence. During sum- mer practices our team was ex- perienced but insecure, having felt betrayed by a coach who left them for a better contract. It meant that for the 3rd straight season yet another stranger would walk onto the field with them. What were they to expect . . . happiness .... failure . . . ? Mr. John Nunziato was the man that stepped onto the field with his coaching staff and handled a team of anxious athletes in the only way he knew how . . . the right way! During the exhibition scrim- mages neither the team nor the coaches were optimistic. As the team entered its season opener it faced one of its toughest challen- ges. Peabody was the reigning champ, pre-season favorite, and a powerhouse in the GBL. On September 17, in the pouring rain, the mighty Highlanders prov- ed, not only to themselves and their coaches, but to the entire GBL, that this was a new team at SHS. A sparkling overtime win demonstrated our pride and a hun- ger to change the SHS football im- age. 121 SHS Opponent 12 Peabody (OT) 6 0 Waltham (non-league) 6 41 Everett 16 6 Medford (OT) 0 17 Chelsea 0 35 Gardner (non-league) 7 19 Haverhill 6 33 Malden 12 13 Revere 8 7 Arlington 29 122 V 123 THANKSGIVING DAY GAME Thanksgiving Day brought the chance for Somerville's Highlanders to finish their best season in years with the GBL title. Going in with an 8-1 re- cord, the Highlanders met un- defeated Arlington with con- fidence. At first it looked like Somerville would do it. In the first quarter Somerville recov- ered an Arlington fumble at the Arlington 13 yard line. Then Ray Snow passed to Tim- my Nelson and the Highland- ers were ahead. At the end of the first half Somerville led 7-0 and was looking strong. It was in the second half, though, that Ar- lington came to life and pro- ceeded to score four consec- utive touchdowns. From that point Somerville couldn't seem to make anything hap- pen, and when they did have opportunities, they couldn't score. The final score of 29 - 7, Ar- lington, didn't show how close the game really was, but it did end one of Somerville's best seasons on a sad note. 124 SOCCER Carlos Arruda William Jarnagin Sal LoBrutto Front Row - left to right: S. Soccer Tourna- ment. The Highlanders got off to a quick start, winning their first 3 games by shutouts. Unfortunately the team could not keep up this pace, scattering 5 wins, 3 ties, and 3 losses over the next 11 games. In the State Tournament the booters lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in the first round to 7th seeded Franklin. The Franklin goal came in a downpour in the last minute of the game. Graduation will no doubt hurt Phil Vaccaro's squad by taking with it many experienced players. But luckily many skillful juniors and sophomores, including Jose Fer- nandes, Victor Silva, Tom Bullock, and Mike Scimemi, will be back next year. Five players from this year's team received post season honors. Named to the GBL 1st All Star Team were Sal LoBrutto and Victor Sil- va. Sal was also chosen for the East- ern Mass. Division I All Star Team. Tom Bullock, Billy Jarnagin, and Andy Holmes were named to the GBL 2nd All Star Team. 127 128 BOYS' TRACK CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM Standing - left to right: Coach V. Captain Jimmy O'Con- nor, whose performance against Everett was one of the highlights of the year, led his team through a tough season. Runners Steve Senna, Billy Murphy, and Ken Donaldson gave good efforts with Mike Megan and John Flynn giving strong performances in the All Star Meet. Strong performances were also a major part of the '77-78 Indoor Track season. The team ended its season with a 3-4-1 record in the GBL and a 5-4-1 finish over all. A high point of the year was Gene Espinal's running the 50 yard dash in a record-breaking 5.6 seconds. Other key performances were given by Co-Captain Joe Deveau and teammate Kevin Thorne in the 300 yard dash and by Co-Captain Stefan Kariotis in the High Hurdles. Runners Bob Mimmo, Billy Mur- phy, Steve Senna, shot putter George Drugas, high jumper Larry Ambush, and dual team member Alan George all contributed their efforts to make the season a suc- cess. After a great 3-0 start, the team was hurt by injuries. Some of the season's high points were the first win over Arlington led by Cap- tain Joyce Moran, Helen Basilesco's great race against Bedford, and Patty Giampa's high finish at the Bedford Invitationals. The team did well considering there were no Senior members. Another young team was the Girls' Indoor Track Team led by Co-Captains Patty Mangiacotti and Wendy Mclnerny. This team was the largest ever, showing the grow- ing interest in track by girls. Al- though the team is not a part of an organized league and therefore not an official team, the girls spend hours in practice. The hardwork and determination of these ath- letes was recognized when seven members qualified for the State Meet. Outstanding performances throughout the season were given by Patty Mangiacotti, Wendy Mc- lnerny, Brenda Athanase, Francine Rothwell, and Wendy Gamache. 133 Cross-Country Captain Joyce Moran SHS Opponent 33 Arlington 24 win Peabody forfeited 50 Malden 15 22 Cambridge Latin 33 19 Bedford 40 22 Arlington 34 17 Arlington Catholic 45 The team also participated in the Bonne Bell Mini Marathon, Bedford Invitational, Boston Public Schools Meet, Northern Area Meet, and the State Meet. 134 BOYS' BASKETBALL Standing - left to right: Coach C. The members of this year's team, es- pecially Co-Captains joe MacKay and John Arria, and Coach Gerry Knight, tried very hard to keep up their winning record. The season was full of some surprising upsets. First, Somerville was stunned when it lost to Chelsea for the first time in 15 years with a score of 60-54. Later in the season it was Peabody's turn to be upset by the High- lander's, 43-42, with a 25 ft. shot at the buzzer by John Arria. Al- though the team didn't finish first, they did qualify for the Tech Tour- ney. Faithful fans showed they were not disappointed in their team by turning out in large num- bers at both home and away games. 137 GIRLS' BASKETBALL Captain Linda Silvestri Kneeling - left to right: C. Marques, C. Harvey, Co-Captain D. Lucia, Captain L. Silvestri, J. Joyce, E. Stanford. Standing: Coach Barbara Whittle, D. Mangiacotti, J. DiPanfilo, J. Moran, K. Monahan. Co-Captain Doreen Lucia 138 SHS sported the youngest Basketball Team in the League, with only two Senior starters. It was partly because they lacked experienced players that the team failed to make the State Tourna- ment for the first time in 3 years. Captain Linda Silvestri was one of the team's most steady performers. Her ability was recognized when she was named to the GBL Girls' All Star Team for the second straight year. Co-Captain Doreen Lucia also performed brilliantly. A definite factor in the outcome of next year's season will be the return of Joyce Moran and 4'H guards Cheryl Marques and Cathy Harvey. With these and other players combining their efforts, next season looks promising. 139 SHS Opponent 59 Chelsea 51 37 Medford 42 37 Everett 35 52 Peabody 46 44 Malden 75 40 Arlington 41 35 Haverhill 47 39 Revere 30 32 Chelsea 27 50 Medford 53 47 Everett 50 36 Peabody 43 36 Malden 53 36 Arlington 27 34 Haverhill 53 39 Revere 30 140 HOCKEY Kneeling - left to right: G. labao, R. It was a disap- pointing season for the Coach as well as the team. Our team, led by Co-Captains Steve Scurini and Tony Marinello, had hoped for a stronger record but somehow it just didn't seem to come together for them. The outgoing Seniors: Mike Driscoll, John Dye, Joe Grace, Gabe Labao, Mike Lauria, Tony Marinello, Mike Nicholas, Steve Scurini, Richie Sperlinga, and Tom Tierney really hustled and did their best during the season. Although all the games were held away from home, the team's spirit was raised by their cheer- leaders and by the few faithful fans who managed to get to the rinks. But the year was not a total loss - the team displayed talent, effort, and spirit. Coach Doncaster has greater hopes for next year since more than half the team will be re- turning. 143 GREATEST SNOW ON EARTH Monday, February 6, 1978 was just another school day, with only two weeks until February vacation. Or so we thought. But the increas- ingly strong gusts of wind that swirled the light snow around the corners of SHS on that day should have been a warning to us of what was to come. The blizzard hurricane of that night and all the next day was a record-breaker that dumped 29 of snow on us and reduced the number of school days that month to six. On Wednesday, February 8, most people braved out into the endless snow and with shovels flying frantically searched for their cars. But we soon ran out of places to dump the snow that we were shoveling. Only when we rested from all the shoveling by WALKING to the neighborhood store to search for bread and milk (and to swap storm stories) did we notice how beautiful it looked with EVERYTHING covered in deep white. True, we couldn't drive, but at least we had our houses and city intact. Many coastal com- munities near us had residents lose their homes, their autos, and even their lives to rushing flood waters from the violent ocean. Cars, stranded on Rt. 128 on Monday night, had to wait until the end of the week to be dis- lodged by the U.S. Army. At least we didn't experience the helpless feeling of watching our homes being washed away or of facing an indefinite stay in a church or school shelter. What year did we graduate from High School? The year of that famous blizzard. And we did survive. 145 In Memory of Mr. David Moore, Athletic 146 Equipment Manger ABBOTT, CATHFRINF. Pg. 54. 27 School St. D.O.B.
