Wanted: The Yearbook Staff would like informa- tion concerning the iden- tity of this alleged SHS senior. All information will be held in the strict- est confidence. The Art Club is made up of students with a special affection for the arts. Field trips, bake sales featuring cakes specially de- signed by club members, and an annual banquet are just a few of the Art Club’s activities. There’s always room for a few more art- ists to join the fun. ART CLUB CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club’s main purpose is to increase its members’ skills in all aspects of photography. The Club’s work can be seen in yearbooks and athletic and public relation programs. Both amateurs and experienced photographers are gladly welcomed. 9 2 The Ecology Club tries to give its members a better understanding of the en- vironment. The Club visits many wildlife sanctuaries and other reserves where nature can be observed un- disturbed by man. The Club also tries to help make the whole community more ecology-minded by presenta- tions in various Somerville schools. ECOLOGY CLUB ---------------------------J LATIN CLUB The Latin Club is affili- ated with the Junior Classi- cal League, and is the de- fending champion of the annual League Convention. A few of the Latin Club’s activities include an annual Saturnalia and trips to the- aters and museums. Anyone who has an interest in the classics is welcome to join. 93 DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club is dedicated to the advancement of Theatre Arts in our schools. Its members have received many statewide awards for acting excellence and for the fantastic plays they perform every year. All members help with the work behind the stage, too. Their hard work and talent is seen and appreciated by all. The Spanish Club is for anyone interested in the Hispanic culture. The members have Spanish luncheons, visit museums, and make pinatas among other activities. They learn what it is like to be Spanish and live Spanish. Ole! 94 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the buffer zone between the students and the administra- tion. The Council’s main concern is with the governmental problems of the school but it is also involved with many social and fund-raising activities. The Student Council is open to all students and all suggestions: use it! The Math Club is for anyone interested in problem solving. Four yearly competitions with other high schools’ teams provide fun and challenges for everyone involved. Although the com- petitions call for good math students, an 800 on the Math SAT’s is not necessary. MATH CLUB 95 TRAVEL CLUB The Travel Club visits such places as Montreal and Washington, D.C. and so gives its members fun and educational experiences. The group rates make the weekend and full-week vacations affordable by most students. Responsible members make the club motto “Fun For AH” come true. The Portuguese Club has both native Portu- guese and American mem- bers. They are people who are interested in the Portuguese language and culture and who try to initiate activities to help the Portuguese community. % PORTUGUESE CLUB ITALIAN CLUB The Italian Club is an organization that brings people together who have an interest in anything Italian (including pasta, of course!). All the mem- bers sell candy to raise money for a huge “banch- etto”. Now THAT’S Italian!! CHESS CLUB The Chess Club is open to anyone who wants to play chess after school. The students who play frequently can compete in matches against other high school teams. Who knows? Maybe another Bobby Fischer walks the corridors of SHS! 97 YEARBOOK STAFF General Editor . . . SHS AIDES OFFICE AIDES MS. BOWDRING’S AIDES The SHS Aides are very impor- tant people. They help keep the operations in the offices running smoothly while gaining experience that may help them in the future. Their “employers” would certain- ly agree that their assistance is indispensable. MR. MURRAY’S AIDES 100 CHEERLEADERS “H-A-P-P-Y” and “P-A-R-T-Y” are about the two most perfect words to describe our cheerleaders. Along with winning many com- petitions, they are hosting their own this year. These are the girls that encourage our athletes. They radiate school spirit and enthu- siasm. This enthisiasm is so contagious at foot- ball and basketball games that the crowd be- comes as R-O-W-D-I-E as the cheerleaders! Led by co-captains Karen Toomey and Colleen Kavanaugh, the cheerleaders are one of the most important factors in making this school radiate spirit and success. Other seniors on the squad are Donna De- Jongh, Patricia Arsenault, Laura Freeman, Paula Ray, and Daisy Gonzalez. With these spirited girls cheering our athletes on Our teams can’t help but be successful. HIGHLANDERS ARE 1! 101 MAJORETTES “Just a little bit more” is the only way to describe our majorettes. They give the Band and the football games more class, more spirit, and more radia- tion. They spend hours upon hours prac- ticing each week, not to mention the years of lessons they have taken. The two co-captains, Liz Binari and Denise Jandreau, perform a breath-taking rou- tihe with fire batons at the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Game. The major- ettes’ enthusiasm can make even a rainy day sunny. 102 103 104 SHS MARCHING BAND The SHS Band, under the direction of Marc Keroack, has progressed greatly in the past few years, and is now recognized as one of the best bands in New England. All of the Band’s success can be attributed to long hours of practice and drill. The Band is, and will con- tinue to be, an asset to the school and the community. They play at all the football games and many parades. Our Band is another one of the many ways that SHS radiates. SOMERVILLE DOES LEAD THE WAY! 10s CHILD DEVELOP- MENT Memories . . . Mr. Pignatiello as Santa Claus . . . waiting for a bus to get to field work on a cold or a beauti- ful spring day . . . most teachers are human . . . observation reports . . . teaching projects . . . joy of seeing children achieve . . . love affair with the 4 year olds . . . leaf fights in the fall . . . movies at the library . . . writing poetry about children 109 Work Study is one of the most popular programs at SHS. Many students must be turned away be- cause too many students apply for too few openings. But most of the students who are in the program feel that they have gained useful work skills and a sense of responsibility, and enjoy their work as well. And who can laugh at a paycheck? no Ill HEALTH SERVICES The Health Ser- vices, or Hospital Careers Program, at SHS provides stu- dents with a chance to see whether a fu- ture in the health fields is possible for them. They work hard and gain prac- tical experience that may help them in the future. FOOTBALL 116 A debt of gratitude is owed this great man. Thank you Coach Dickey. He turned a winless team into a successful team in a few short months. Of course the coach doesn’t play the game, but he instructs and disciplines the players. Those two factors can help turn a losing team into a winner. Most of all, thank you team for making us proud of you. Without the leadership of Co-Captains Tom Cremins and John Gale, our team would have lacked the psyching to turn a game around. This year S.H.S. had one of the best football sea- sons it has had in years. We won our annual Columbus day game with Medford in the pouring rain by a score of 21-16. This is the only year we have Beaten Med- ford since 1967. Our guys radiate determination and a never dying school spirit that made them super this year. Finally, we have a winner. We had a great season this fall. The class of ’77 wishes the football team luck. Make us proud in years to come. 117 118 In the past six years, we have begun a new tradition at Somerville High School, the mighty Highlander Soccer Team. Our team has become Championship contenders in just a few years of competition. We had another great season this year! With a rec- ord of 17 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties to lead the G.B.L. In tournament play we advanced to the Quarter final round by beating Attleboro and Marshfield. This was truly a team effort. With the superb goal tending of John Reis (11 shutouts) and the goal scoring of Frank Lucas and the Co-Captains John Bullock and Nuno Simoes, our Somerville High School Soccer Team was super. Our boston Globe All Scholastic Leo Figueiredo was also a radiant contributor to our team’s success. These dedicated players deserve all the recognition they get and much more. The mighty Highlander Soccer Team continues to be a record breaker and a milestone at S.H.S. 119 SOCCER 120 BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY 122 I Led by captain Dan DiGregorio, the Somerville Highlander Cross Country team participated in the tough Greater Boston League. DiGregorio was selected to the G.B.L. All-Star Team and also ran in the Northern Area Championship meet as well as the State meet. The team had seniors Mike Henderson, Phil Doherty and DiGregorio, juniors Jerry Caldwell and Jim O’Connor and sophomores Steve Senna and Ken Donaldson. 123 GIRLS’ TRACK 124 The 1976-1977 Somerville High School Girls’ Track Team did well this year. Under the direc- tion of Coach Charles O’Rourke and Captain Patricia Mclnerny (of both Cross-Country and Indoor) the team successfully competed in the State Finals. Radiant Senior Team Members were Patty Mclnerny, Jeannette Amazeen, Maureen Cremin, Cathy Finlay, Teresa Hoey, Karen Ktona, Mary McCarthy, Maureen Mc- Kenna, Lorraine Messina, Cheryl Milonopou- los, Helen Reid, Loretta Rizzo, and Jeri-Ann Sheehan, and Joan Celletti. 125 HOCKEY Highlander Hockey is coming alive. Despite a shaky start to this season the team is steadily im- proving. Under the direction of Coach Doncaster and his assistants William Fahey and Steve Burlamachi this team is also making us proud. With Co-Captains John Reidy and Tom Riley to lead them on the team put up a stiff fight in the GBL race. Because we don’t have a home rink few supporters turn out to cheer our skaters on. Yet these players and their travelling fans deserve congrat- ulations for living through the games in an ice box. Our Super Stars’ enthusiasm can never be cooled. That’s real school spirit. BOYS’ BASKETBALL As usual (and by now we have come to expect it) the S.H.S. Boys’ Basketball team had another win- ning season. Thanks in large part to Coach Gerry Knight our overall win record was about 90% in season play. Led by Co-Captains Ken Twohig and Gary Good- ridge the team carries on the tradition of the mighty Highlanders. This tradition of spirit and know-how gives Somerville an advantage over all comers. Our PRIDE in this team RADIATES throughout the school. There is never a doubt that Somerville is Tourney-Bound. Thank you Team! 131 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 132 III Girls’ Basketball has come a long way in the past five years. Again we have another super team. Their determination and school spirit have made us proud. For the 2nd year in a row they qualified for tournament play by finishing a strong second in the G.B.L. Coach Barbara Whittle directs the team’s valiant efforts, while their Captain, the high scoring Chris Basteri, helps lead them to victories. Co-captain, Junior Linda Silvestri, is preparing for an even better ’78 season!!!! Although Girls’ Basketball has existed here at S.H.S. for many years never has it been more popular. This is another of the mighty Highlander tradition ihat is still going strong. 133 BOYS’ INDOOR TRACK The Somerville High Boys’ Indoor Track team had high hopes and spirits going into their ’77 sea- son. The Boys’ Track team had been picked to be one of the top contenders for the Greater Boston League title. They had the best sprinting team in the league with Steve Dell’Anno, Tri-Captain, in the 50 yard dash, Joe Deveau and Tri-Captain Rich Papaluca, always scoring one-two in the 300 yard dash, and Tri-Captain John Power usually being favored in the 600 yard dash. Dan DiGreg- orio, Cross Country Captain, the finest distance runner to run at S.H.S. since 1973, always put points on the scoring charts. In the field events, Somerville’s speciality was the high jump with Mike Errante and Steve Dell’- Anno always capturing the first and second place spots. In the shot put event seniors John Gale, Steve Lavin and Billy Monaco were our conten- ders for the points. The relay, generally made up of Joe Deveau, Dan DiGregorio, John Power or Jimmy Roberts, and anchored by Rich Papaluca, made an exciting last event and picked up an extra five points. Without the patience and dedication of Coaches Kevin O’Malley and Vincent Cronin, this season would have been incomplete. Jane Joyce, the man- ager, was a great help and influence to the team. She also put our team score and statistics together. All information must be accurate .and complete. Please follow directions exactly and check your spelling. Please write clearly and in ink. 1.
