It s not all as bad as it sounds. At least it gives you something to do during the day, even if the whole day goes wrong. School is what we ourselves make of it. Is it being squished like a sardine while in the bus? Or standing in that jaggered line for a late slip? What a thing to wake up to — I swear we should charge to wait in line. What’s five more times of getting sent back up the wrong stairway? Or having books jump out of your locker and leave you standing there with a nice looking bruise? This MUST be preparing us for life in the real world. 2 3 JUN ! 0 1976 iuu iu i iere D . «UCKLBY u-8. JOYCE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT 83 c L U B S STUDENT COUNCIL This year’s Student Council began as one of the largest councils at SHS in the past decade. With this large enrollment, the council worked on in- troducing many new services at SHS, i.e. Soccer Hally, and the opening of the Student Council Office. The advi- sor, Mr. Robert Siggens, worked closely with the council in developing a new attitude towards the communi- ty. As a result, the council participat- ed in many fund drives for charities and provideri useful services for the City of Somerville. 86 ART CLUB The Arl Club is composed of a group of interested students who work with new ideas and experiences in art. Members discover new ideas through visits to museums, demonstrations, and art gallery shows to see how profes- sional artists work. Another dimension of the club is the creation of individual and group projects in various art media. Hopefully, the end result of participation in the Art Club will be an awareness of the vast careers and leisure time opportunities available in the field of art. 87 MATH CLUB The Math Club, open to students who have an interest in problem solving, partici- pates in the Greater Boston Math League. In addition to the four yearly Math League competitions, problem solving sessions are held weekly. While the Greater Boston League competitions are a challenge to even the best of students, credentials as an Albert Kinstein are not required for mem- bership. TENNIS CLUB The Tennis Club is an organization that gives SUS students an opportunity to play organized tennis. It is the first step to com- petitive tennis. It is paving the way for next year’s tennis team. With the aid of the school system, the club rents courts in Win- chester once a week. SKI CLUB Somerville High School’s Ski Club is designed to give its students a taste of “downhill skiing.” Weather permitting, occasional day trips to nearby mountains are in order. The highlight of the club is either a 2-day weekend excursion or sometimes even a 3-day weekend in New Hami)shire and its White Mountains or Vermont and its Green Moun- tains. But, above all, a good time and no broken bones are the Club’s main claim to fame. 90 ECOLOGY CLUB Most of tlit activities of the Ecology Club deal with the understanding and the improving of our environment. They do this through field trips and activities such as waste recycling, bike rides and trips to nature areas 91 DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club is an organization that brings together students interested in the theater both on and off stage. The club goes to see professional and amateur productions and puts on several productions of its own, one of which is written by a student. The group goes to workshops, participates in talent night, and also puts out a monthly newsletter for its members. 92 LATIN CLUB The Latin Club is affiliated with The Massachusetts Junior Classical League and annually attends The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, lectures on classical subjects, the state convention, and field days at various high schools and colleges. The club is open to all students taking Latin or those with an interest in the classics. 93 ITALIAN CLUB For those lx rn in Italy, the Italian Club is a trip to their homeland. For others, it is a visit to a new country. Meeting once every week, the club has as its purpose uniting those students who are interested in any aspect of Italian culture. Mem- bers participate in activities such as plays, dances, pizza parties, outings and movies. LITERARY MAGAZINE The Literary Magazine is an annual publication that contains poems, short stories, essays, plays, cartoons, and some sketches. Its aim is to reflect the many moods and outlooks of the students of SHS. The Magazine utilizes writers, artists, typists, busi- ness managers, organizers, and thinkers. Contributions can be either material writ- ten on a student’s own initia- tive or something passed in to a teacher to fulfill an as- signment. DECA is designet! to de- velop future leaders for mar- keting and distribution. The purposes of DECA are two- fold: to develop a respect for education in marketing and distribution which will con- tribute to occupational com- mence and to promote un- derstanding and apprecia- tion for the responsibilities of citizenship in our free enter- prise system. Opportunities for group and individual participation exist through committee activities and through projects and con- tests. DECA CHESS CLUB Tlu Chess Club, which meets once a week and is on call any time members wish to have a game, competes in and around the area with other Chess Clubs in duels of skill NEWSPAPER The recently resurfaced Newspaper is hoping to keep its finger on the pulse of the school. Activities include: celebration and discussion of holidays (including the traditional fiesta navidena and Dia de los Reyes Magis), field trips (dinners at Latin American or Spanish restaurants, flamenco dance programs, museum exhib- its), and guest speakers relating their experiences with Spanish on the monthly cultural day. To promote school spirit, the Spanish Club offers a Premio ExpaTTol — a scholarship to a worthy graduating senior. The Spanish Club also traditionally sponsors the induction of Spanish honor students into the Fran- cisco Miranda Chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. The Spanish Club combines fun, learning, and school service for all its members. 98 CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club’s main purpose is to improve its members skills in photography. The club is open to anyone who has already had experience with cameras and to those who would like to learn. 99 S.H.S. AIDES Miss Bowdring’s Aides Mr. Paul Murray’s Aides 100 Mr. Cartland’s Aides MAJORETTES CHEERLEADERS SPIRIT AND STAMINA YEARBOOK STAFF Editors: Richard Mangan and Fisa Giordano Business Manager: Jean Reposa and Secretary: Lucy Furtado 106 Winter rts Schedule S. H. S. no Mr. William Quinlan “It Don’t Come Easy” Nothing came easy to the Highlanders this season as they struggled through a win- less campaign. Hampered by injuries to his men. Coach Bill Quinlan was forced to turn to inexperienced underclassmen. Co-Cap- tain Jim Beebe proved to be at his best this season, as he was named to the Greater Boston League All Stars. Accompanying Beebe was Co-Captain Tony LoGuidice, who led the team with gritty determina- tion, only to be frustrated in his goal of a winning season. However, there were some bright mo- ments in Somerville’s bleak season, such as the near victories over Medford and Arling- ton. At the Medford game, the Highland- ers. with no school spirit, fought back from behind to take the lead, only to lose a heart- breaker in the last minute, 22-21. The rain could not dampen Somerville’s spirit at the Arlington Thanksgiving Day game. Maneuvering in the mud, they looked as if they would have a sure victory, but with thirty- three seconds left to play, Arlington waded through for a touchdown to tie the game 6-6. Fans stormed the side lines, hungry to see the Highlanders first victory in almost two seasons, only to be disappointed. Somerville fans don't ask for much , but they learned victories don’t come easy. Ill 113 Mr. Philip Vaccaro Imagine a soccer team with 16 wins and 0 losses, and imagine this team at Somerville High School, and what have you got? The Somerville High School Soccer Team. The team’s success was aided by Coach Phil Vaccaro, Assistant Coach Sal Gulino, and J.Y. Coach Tony D’Ambro- sio. But to he truly successful you need the right combination of players, and WE HAD THEM Co-Captains were Tony Giorgione. Joe Moniz, and Larry Palogaris. The starters and their posi- tions were John Reis as goal tender, Tony Giorgione and Lou Gelormini at half-back. Jim McCune, Joe Moniz, Bob Montalto, and Larry Palogaris on de- fense, Nuno Simoes, Frank Lucas, Leo Figueiredo, and Jim Roberts as for- wards. The team’s impressive record includ- ed 1-1 league wins and the Greater Bos- ton League Title. Frank Lucas, Nuno Simoes, Leo Figueiredo. Jim Roberts, and Lou Gelormini were chosen for the G.B.L. All-Star Team. Lucas and Fi- gueiredo were also chosen for the East- ern Mass. Division I All-Star Team. Our very successful year ended on a sadder note when we lost to Belmont in the playoffs, but as we said it was a very good year and one of which we. the students of Somerville High, are all proud — both of and for our team. 115 BOYS’ TRACK INDOOR 117 GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY BOYS’ BASKETBALL 122 Mr (•cr.iM kniiilit So. Somerville Leads the Way? Well, it almost happened again this season (lor the umpteenth time). But it was not to 1m the season for the Highlander faith- ful. After an opening game loss to non- league Waltham, the Highlanders, led By co-captains Buss Lees and Jim I)i- Panfilo. reeled off 8 victories in their next 9 games. Gaining confidence with each win. the team seemed primed for its 2 Biggest games of the season, with Lveretl and Arlington. But something happened on the way to tin hoop. The Highlanders had left their sujx r shoot- ing touches at home. Both games were lost, and so was the league title. But the desire to win was still there and the team clawed its way into the playoffs. Some of the season's Bright points were the ap- |M aranee of Buss Lees and Jim DiPan- filo among the scoring leaders of the GBL. the excellent play of center Gary Goodridge. who rip|M d down a seem- ingly endless amount of rebounds, and the inspired play of some juniors and sophomores who'make-up an excellent nucleus for the next 2 y'ears. The high jMiint of the season had to Be the home game against Medford It had everyth- ing a fan could want and more. Guards Ken Twohig and Jim McCune led the team Back from a point deficit with 3 minutes to go as the I lighlanders defeat- ed Medford. ( ( -( . Because of his out- standing play that night. Twohig was named to the Boston-Herald-American Schoolboy Basketball Honor Boll. So. Somerville Leads the Way? In the hearts of us SHS students, you Bet it does. 123 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL jn? x!U sammu S5S jDMERVUJ £ mERVtLU SWtWttl Mi Miss Barbara Whiule The Somerville High Girls’ Basketball team, led by Captain Kathy Basteri. put together a very impressive season. Kathy was one of the top scorers in the Greater Boston League. Together with other top scorers, Pam Iovine and Janet McCloskey, the team fought its way to a good finish in the league. The team is well on its way to the Girls' Championship Tournament. It also has a good number of sophomores and juniors to lead the way in coming years. 125 HOCKEY Mr George Hcnaiill With a win over Haverhill in the first game of the ’75- 76 season. Coach George Renault's hockey team seemed to lx off to a good start. Due to the team’s success in this game, however, the Highlander’s oppo- nents increased their efforts and, unfortu- nately, were successful. Despite our boys' great team effort, the opposing teams were often able to get the puck past the defense- men and the goalie. Although the seniors. Mike Cooper, Thomas Hatzimichael, Kevin Keane, and Jay Mitchitson are leaving, twelve soph- more and junior members (among these starting center. John Reidy, number 17) remain to give Somerville High a bright outlook for our hockey team next year. Even though the team was not the first in the league standings, it will always lx num- ber one to the students at Somerville High School. 127 128 DIRECTORY ABBOTT, DONNA. P. 38: 27 School Si..
