If wishes were horses then beggars would ride, goes the old Irish adage. New head coach William Quinlan might well have been thinking similarly at the end of the season this year. When at the opening rally the Coach promised a win over Arlington, no one took him seriously. But with his newly installed wishbone offense, his team beat Arlington High on the first Saturday of the season. Though the score was only 7-0, the victory was sweet because Somer- ville had not beaten Arlington in 20 years. It looked like a super season. The next game against Everett was well-played, but the final score showed Somerville on the short end — the slide continued with losses to Revere, Malden, Quincy, North Quincy, and Medford. The only other bright spot of the season was a 7-0 win over Chelsea High. In the final game, on Thanksgiving morning, So- merville played Waltham High, a team on their way to the High School Super Bowl. In the mud at Dilboy Field, the two teams slopped and slugged it out. The first half was played pretty evenly with both teams turning over the ball. The score at the end of the half was Waltham , So- merville 0. In the second half, as had been the case in most of the games this season, the Highlanders just could not mount an attack of their own, or stop the Waltham on- slaught. The game ended in a 36-0 loss. It would be easy to say the players were poor, or that the Coach and the wishbone were the problem. But the stats show another problem. In the first half of virtually every game, Somerville was in the ball game. Most games were lost in the second half. Why? Well, in the age of platoon football, Somerville still has many boys who play both offense and defense. Exhaustion, not the quality of the player, was the major cul- prit this season. We wish Coach Quinlan not better horses next season (there aren't any better), but more horses. 110 ?11. Maryin Lawrence THANKSGIVING DAY GAME 112 The pre-dawn rain on Thanksgiving Day may have dampened the stadium and the field at Dilboy. but noth- ing dampened the spirits of Somerville High's fans. Not even a 36-0 loss to Waltham! All during the game, nu- merous cheers and chants were screamed by spirited Highlanders amidst a snowfall of colorful confetti and red and blue shakers. The boys, some playing their last game for S. H. S., worked hard on the field: yet they just couldn't seem to put the plays together. Before half-time, the uniforms, which previously would have put the White Knight' to shame, were so dirt covered that it would have been too tough a job for even Bold or Clorex to clean. The band, drill team, and pom-pom girls put on a superb half-time show, their best of the season, highlighted by the majorettes who, wearing their Indian costumes, showed expertise in handling batons of fire. For the last time, appetites for Waltham Hawk” had to be pacified by good old roast turkey. For this was the last Turkey Day confrontation between Waltham and Somerville, ending the rivalry which was begun in 1905. As the last fan left Dilboy Stadium he found his emotions mixed, yet a voice seemed to say, Maybe next year, as we begin a new tradition against Arlington, we might triumph and win. 113 1973-74 Soccer Result Somerville 3 Rindge 2 Somerville 2 Arlington 0 Somerville 0 Brockton 2 Somerville 1 Brookline 1 Medford 2 Somerville 1 Somerville 0 Camb. That they're great, really super, a team to be proud of! Or can you actually say anything about the team that can equal the improvemei shown in one short year? What, you may ask yourself, has happened? Has everyo started to eat his Wheaties, or is the team so totally together that they just keep ing goals and winning games? Maybe Somerville is finally getting the team, th- ord, and the recognition that is deserves. Coach George Renault, along with Cap Dan Vivian and the other fine hockey players, should get the credit they deserve for showing that Somerville DOES lead the way! ryofl § 120 TRACK GIRLS' TRACK The Girls Track Team after a long pe- riod of second-class citizenship was made official this year. The streets of Somerville proved to be good training ground for the girls in Cross Country season. In meets at Amherst, Cambridge, and Falmouth, the girls took two team trophies, one first and one second, paced by the strong lead of first place finishes by co-captain Mary Biagioni and team manager Susan Lambias. Co-captain Phyllis Arsenault was also a strong fin- isher, along with Susan Ekstrom and sophomore Joanne Coiley. Led by Susan Ekstrom's fine racing at the New Eng- land Women's Cross-Country Champi- onships in Falmouth, the girls placed third in New England, missing second place by only one team point. Quite an achievement for the first time around! In three winter meets at Falmouth the girls compete with a variety of Massa- chusetts high schools and continued their competitive training program, branching out into field events. Mary Bagioni and Susan Lambias hurdling, Phyllis Arsenault and Susan Lambias high jumping, and Debbie Toppi putting the shot. In addition to the serious competitors, there are a number of girls who run for fun.'' The girls can be seen any mild day in flight down Highland Avenue — this new generation of women is hard to keep up with! i. r-(r odHm;7sLn od i 125 127 1?8 AC-TI-VI-TIES 129 AND SO WE MOVE ON. . . The new Superintendent of Schools in Somerville is Dr. Urban J. D. Leavitt of Colorado, a former teacher, principal and college instructor who has had many years of experience as an educational administrator. Dr. Leavitt succeeded Dr. Leo C. Donahue, retiring after having served the Somerville School Department for the past 42 years, the last 15 as Superintendent. Dr. Leavitt was elected unanimously (9-0 vote) by the School Committee, ending a nation-wide search fora new Superintendent. A graduate of the University of Texas, Dr. Leavitt also served as Supt. of Schools in Aurora, Colorado, Roslyn, New York, and Bay Village City, Ohio. He served briefly as an elementary school principal in Austin, Texas. Dr. Leav- itt received his Master's Degree in 1956 and his Doctoral Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Texas, also. Retiring Superintendent of School, Dr. Leo C. Donahue, has been a great asset to the Somerville School System. During his 42 years with us, he has served us well, being more than just an administrator, but an involved citizen of the city, a person accessible to the public and to the students. He brought with him to Somerville not only the benefit of his knowledge, but also his sense of loyalty and his ability to serve well. For 42 years. Dr. Donahue worked for us and with us. For his time, we can only offer him the warmest and most grateful THANK YOU that he shall receive. 130 . . . AND THINGS CHANGE Mr. William Fasciano, former Mathematics Department Head, was recently elected to the position of Headmaster of the High School, replacing retiring Headmaster Albert H. Giroux. He was elected after lengthy hours of debate among School Committee Members. Mr. Fasciano, a Somerville High School graduate, received his B. S. from Northeastern University, and his Masters Degree in Education from Tufts University. He also has a Masters Degree in the Art of Teaching. It was 1956 when Mr. Fasciano began his teaching career in Somerville. Always liked by students as well as by faculty, he worked hard and served us well; he is most deserving of the trust placed in him, and extremely capable to serve as High School Headmaster. Mr. Albert Giroux, Retiring Headmaster, receives standing ovation from crowd at SHS Christmas Concert Mr. William Fasciano, New Headmaster, in the classroom before his election. 131 A TRIBUTE TO MR. GIROUX New Headmaster Willium Fasciano congratulates retiring Headmaster Albert H. Giroux Mr. Giroux with retiring school physician Dr. Thomas O'Brien. THEN 20 YEARS AGO WHEN TEACHERS WERE STUDENTS. ;C5 We had many things to face in September when we returned to school. We had to begin working on the yearbook. What we didn't know was that there would be a great deal of work and frustration ahead of us. We began working on the yearbook and then all our troubles began. We had no advisor and no place to work. We asked about getting a room and an advisor, but nothing was done. No one seemed to care. We had missed our first deadline and so our editor wrote this letter: Oct. 1, 1973 Dr. Leo C. Donahue Superintendent of Schools Secretary to School Commission 81 Highland Avenue Somerville, MA 02143 Dear Dr. Donahue: 1 am writing to you in regards to the Somerville High School Yearbook. 1 am the editor of the book, but am afraid that there will not be a yearbook this year if something is not done to improve the situation regarding the yearbook. As of now, there is no advisor to the book. The teachers do not want to take the book because they have a full schedule. The teacher who was advisor last year quit the yearbook because he has not time to do it because his schedule is full. Another problem is that there is no place for the staff to work on the book during the day. As a result, the opening section of the book is late and we will have to pay more money. I have asked for a room and an advisor, but nothing has been done. I would appreciate any help you could give to the staff and would appreciate a response to this letter. She got an immediate response which read: Sincerely, yubrnj CanrrurjMJ Yearbook Editor October 16, 1973 Miss Helen Cameron, Yearbook Editor Somerville High School 81 Highland Avenue Somerville, MA 02143 Dear Miss Cameron: At the meeting of the School Committee held last evening, your letter calling attention to the lack of a faculty adviser to the Yearbook and the problem concerning space for the staff to work on the book during the school day was read and the communication was placed on file. Copies of your entire communication were provided for the members of the School Committee. The Assistant Superintendent of Schools reported that inquiries are being made at the junior high and elementary schools for an advisor for the Yearbook and the administrators at Somerville High School will advise you on the progress made on this matter and on available space for the staff to work on the book. Very truly yours, LeoC. Donahue, Ph.D. Secretary LCD mtb 166 cc: Mr. Giroux We thought things were surely going to improve. We were in- formed that we had a room. Things were finally looking up for us. Then we saw our room! It was dirty and wasn't very much to look at, but we didn't care because now we had some place to work. The book had begun on its way when our advisor came. We thought things would go better now, but there were still arguments and frustrations as we went along. We were notified that there was another room ready, the room we were originally suppose to have. Everyone was excited. The new room was so much better. It was clean and bright and nicer to work in. 167 Everything is going well now because we did have the 1974 Yearbook done. Mr. Charles Cook Ann Marie Driscoll Lynda Rancatore Claire Herman Stella Caspariello The Homeroom Reps We would also like to thank all the Juniors who got posed for pictures. 2 people who helped us get through the year and get LeeJarnagin Kathy Jannetti Michelle Naun Charles Mainini Ma — for putting up with us those days Mr. Robert O Dea for the book and all the teachers and students who WE THANK THEM VERY MUCH! 168
