There was no GBL Championship, but the Highlanders' Pride and Spirit won over all. 103 Defense! THANKSGIVING The Highlanders approached Thanksgiving Day morning with a couple of strikes against them. (The main one being without their Captain, Tom Wilson.) The game started off 14-6 in favor of the Hawks, but the Highlan- ders fought their way back within a two point margin of the Hawks mak- ing it 14-12. Then Steve Meloone picked off a pass and went 50 yards for a touchdown to put the Highlanders ahead 18-14. But the Hawks retaliated with another touch down making the score 20-18. The Highlanders' last chance came late in the 4th quarter when they were deep in Waltham Territory with a 4th down and 1 yard to go for that first down, but were stopped by the Hawks and the clock ran out The 72 Highlanders start- ed the climb up, lets hope next year's team doesn't let them down. 107 Record 1972-1973 LOST WON Dec. 19 Medford 54-41 Dec. 29 Malden 63-52 22 Camb. John Bernardi Coach Gerry Knight 109 110 Ml Donna Caruso TRACK The Highlanders harriers completed their most successful cross-country season in history. They finished the year undefeated in dual meet competition, led by their captain, Tom Joyce. The other members of the squad were Dan Foley, Kevin Crotty, Ed McClure, Renato Carpinito, John Marques, Dan Sartell, Dave Hilbern, Al Banda, and Art Tully. The highlight of the season was when they successfully defended their league championship with a record 34 points. They also competed in the State Meet and finished ninth in Class A competition. 112 X-Country Record S. O. S. O. Head coach Joseph Caruso, who is also a math teacher at SHS, stated, I didn't think that we would do as well as we have done. The coach was very surprised and pleased with the team's performance. The Highlanders displayed an air-tight defense as they jumped off to a four game winning streak allowing but one goal in those four games. The most goals they allowed in a single game was three. The most they were ever beaten by was two. The goalies, Orville Atkins, George Gomes, and Mike Adams along with the fullbacks Ray Mitrano, Manny Almeida, Bob Hannon, and Stan Paziale Came up with great defensive plays to stifle the enemy forwards. The scoring punch was provided by Cosmo DiSchino who had 17 goals and 8 assists along with Sal Alfieri who had 18 goals and 10 assists. Don Lazarre, Tom Perone, Albert Martins, Jimmy Almeida and Charlie Alfieri worked the outside positions. Probably the key to the whole season was the play of our halfbacks Mike Adams and Jimmy Almeida who played so well throughout the 18 game season. When called upon, Roy Pontes, Mike Lavasseur, and Peter Mimmo filled in and did a bang-up job. Last years captains, Mike Adams and Cosmo DiSchino, will be replaced by Ray Mitrano, Jim Almeida, and Sal Alfieri for the 1973 season which, I am sure, will be a truly exciting one. 118 Cosmo DiSchino 119 CHEERLEADERS POM-POM GIRLS 122 THE BAND MAJORETTES COLOR GUARD 123 CLUBS ITALIAN CLUB 124 NORTHEAST DISTRICT CHORAL SOCIETY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ART CLUB 125 ECOLOGY CLUB LATIN CLUB 127 STUDENT COUNCIL 128 FOOTBALL RALLY Coach Nunziato, We Love You! My friends and my shoes are new — they both hurt a little. Two years ago I am the familiar junior, the old-timer noting waxed floors, psychedelic walls, familiar faces on taller bodies. My dungarees have faded during my odyssey in the sun, but a new epic has begun: building our ship, working harder, becoming better. One year ago I am the sagacious senior, the starry-eyed sailoress preparing for voyage, the bible of educational wisdom a repository of old memories: smiling friends, odd teachers, horrifying tests, hilarious homerooms. My dungarees are worn whitish. But our ship? Ah, I will swim. Now Who am I? — Loretta Lorusso 138 139 You may dress in jeans and a faded denim jacket with hair down to your shoulders or you may wear a dark colored sport coat and have a crew-cut, but you recognize each other as indi- viduals and you listen. ’.40 You reach out to those who need you and you respect those who protect you. Dr. Philip Bloom E and S Cleaning Ann Marie's Sub Shop GROVER'S 168 Broadway, Somerville PHARMACY In Memoriam It is Katharyn McCann the stenography and typing teacher who is most memo- rable to us. There was about her always the unmistakable aura of class , the height, the carriage, the patrician beauty one associates with the Town and Country portraits of the beautiful lady in Sybil Connolly impeccable tweed standing hospitably before the manor house in some lovely Irish county. Patrician she was, but there was nothing detached or remote about the attention or heart she brought to her classroom work or to the job search for her stenogra- phy girls. She imposed no emotional redundancies — of sentimentality, anger, or any other kind — on classes or colleagues. There was just the precise, succinct, articulate, principled protectiveness towards the quality program. She was ex- travagant only with energies for her family, her colleagues, and her students. She enlarged upon the spare symbols of the stenography text by supplying all of us with a lovely example of integrity. We will miss her very much. 168 cun. «aitai - r • • mmmmm x.’x tjMrawj IlPfSpsiti •' •' 4.ii Jri A! i ggHCit. SfKj’W C- J| v ! J ! .1 '- ,4 - J'V.I - r .
