totfaenion, fo 6ei ty The Yearbook Of Somerville High School June, 1972 The Radiator, Somerville High School Somerville, Ma. 02143 I am the Child. All the world waits for my coming. All the earth watches with interest to see what I shall become. Civilization hangs in the balance, For what I am, the world of tomorrow will be. I am the Child. I have come into your world, about which I know nothing. Why I came I know not; How I came I know not. I am curious; I am interested. I am the Child. You hold in your hand my destiny, You determine, largely, whether I shall succeed or fail. Give me, I pray you, those things that make for happiness. Train me, I beg you, that I may be a blessing to the world. When I came to realize that I wasn't the important snow-ball maker or good guy cowboy I had thought I was, that there was no great demand for snowballs in the world anymore and no more Indians to fight, life changed for me. I left my self-centered, self-made world and plunged into reality — my existance was made less important by my encounter with others; I realized that the world was made up of many, many parts and I was only a small segment. But with this new awareness I learned how it was to really feel love, and hurt, and sadness, and happiness, and a million other emo- tions I had never experienced fully before. Everyday life became a challenge, an ordeal, a reward. I dreaded going to high school because I figured the days would be repetitious and unchanging. But I found that my attitudes and moods determined what the days were to be like. If I was in a good mood, I took every- thing in stride. I was happy and enjoyed my friends. But if I was in a bad mood, the whole day was unbearable — my nerves were on edge, I was mad at everybody I talked to. cuJLoJt' jO— cL tjy jts . oLloal. j juqjL. (X. oIajuvyvx. . Some days everything seemed to go wrong. I did the wrong assignment in math; my English teacher was in and I thought he was going to be absent and I hadn't done my homework. I got sent down to the build- ing master twice. , . o+a JjJO'KJL jj JC O jCoJJU AAJA’d yi 'Jis jl}ukJLcL Then there were the days when the little things didn't bother me cause I was sq deep in thought. I was taking a good look at everybody I saw. It really depressed me. 00 yyrvOsruj, The whole world seemed so absurd. Why am I sitting here cramming in math formulas when I'm never gonna use them again? Wasting my time preparing for the future and throwing away the en- joyment of the present? Nobody seemed to understand. Everybody just kept on acting natural, as if nothing was wrong. th£y don 'JL jyyijl. JJinjdjL UAA_ o( jOsuj In a couple of days I got out of my depressed mood. I don't know what did it. Maybe if you think about something for a real long time you begin to accept it, and laugh it off. At least I knew what they were up to. They didn't even stop to think about it . Face piles and piles of trials with smiles. It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave and keep on thinking free. All the little things that happened cheered me up. Life wasn't so bad after all. cWl- ! UJajU. Becoming Discovering yourself, a few good points and so many bad jumbled together in one person: the little insecurities, and hatreds, and jealousies so evident but so hard to reach. Admitting the truth rather than denying — the first big step of modification. Rejoicing in new-found knowledge rather than regretting, Applying self-knowledge to the understanding of others. Pushing, trudging, crawling, pulling yourself forward When things are getting too comfortable. The struggle within, the person created by others fighting the original person over the right to identity. Taking a step on your own, hesitant and unsure, Fighting the desire to return to safety. Finding good results, stepping again: Creating a new person just a little different than before. is Superior to Being. sitting your life away, growing stiff and cold, no circulation, pretending your way through, hiding behind a wall, wearing your life away, by immovable convictions and hardened feelings, laughing your way through, throwing reason away throwing sincere emotions away throwing life away. i don 'JL hna ur ufhcct kJ? His encouragement lives, and will continue to live, in the hearts of many people. 90 Captain Dan Willey, a 170-lb. senior end, led the Somerville Highlanders (2-6) against the Hawks (2-6) in the 49th meet- ing between the two clubs in a non- league rivalry that first began in 1905 — (25-19-5 in favor of Waltham.) All year Somerville's offensive team was very effective, but the defense did not catch up till later in the season. The turning point of the season was the Malden Game, where Malden won a close victory (21-20), because a touchdown of Somer- ville was called back. Originally schedueled for Thanksgiving Day, the game was postponed until Satur- day because of bad weather. Twelve se- niors donned their Highlander uniforms for the last time: Pat Scrima ( The quarter- back and no. 1 passer); Paul Nunziato (superb receiver); Dan Willey (the highly spirited captain and superb receiver); Paul Velardo (Mr. Outside); Ken Duffy (point holder and punter); Steve McCoy (guard); Ken Runion (tackle); Al Robbat (tackle); Dick Spingel (an end changed to cornerback to strengthen the defense); and Dave Willey and George DeYoung (who were injured early in the season but were always willing to help out.) Other outstanding players were Tom Wilson, a jr. (leading ground gainer, Mr. Inside), and Steve Mackey, a soph. (end). Scrima had a fine football afternoon as he completed 13 of 15 passes for 166 yards and both touchdowns. The 155-lb. quart- erback threw a six-yard TD pass to Nun- ziato late in the second quarter, and fired the winning 20-yd. pass to Willey near the game's end. Nunziato was the leading pass catcher with seven receptions, while Willey and Mackey had three apiece. Wilson was the game's top running back with 93 yds. in 24 carries — nearly 4 yds. per attempt — while teammate Velardo gained 22 yds. in 9 tries. Thanksgiving Day Came — Scrima's first touchdown pass to Nunziato Thanksgiving Day Came — Scrima's second touchdown pass to Willey Coach John Nunziato and his Highlanders had turkey on Thanksgiving Day, and ate Hawk two days later. . to r. — Coaches lohn Nunziato, Carter Lord. Despite their lack of experience they held their own and pulled through with a 4-8 record. The team was captained by senior Joe Araujo, the center halfback who was changed to center fullback during the season to strengthen the defense. Other seniors were Sebi Ragusa, the left halfback, changed to left fullback, and Bob Hannon, right fullback. The team displayed their very best at the Salem game, where Somerville kept complete control of the game and came out winning 5-2. Coach Caruso predicts a fine season for the team next year, with the confidence of a year's experience behind them. (left) — Capt. Joe Araujo.
