[The Class of 1970 has witnessed a decade of con- trast — man’s inhumanity to man and man’s hul manity to man. Man has hated man; man has loved i man. The agony and ecstasy of a whole de lade has shaped the future development of eaMI individual of our class., MW A I During the past decade, the Peace Corps, Vista and the | peace movements were born. Until 1970 the desires for peace and universal brotherhood were merely whispered. Because of a greater awareness of social respon- sibility. these desires are now strong commands, given in an insistent voice. It is in response to these commands that people gathered on com- mons and squares the world over to pray for peace in an attempt to save mankind. To live in peace and harmony for a weekend, people gathered in a place, called Woodstock. The deaths of Kennedy. King. Churchill and Nehru profoundly affected not just one nation, but all mankind. Both American and Russian space explorers who sacrificed their lives, were equally mourned. Peo- ple did not ask: What country were they from? They simply asked. Who? or What men? 10

We will make changes not by irrational and amoral behavior, but rather by rational and moral thinking. As new gradu- ates. we realize what we are undertaking is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one. It is also not a task, inspired by an idealistic motive and undertaken on the impulse of a moment. When the first frustrat- ing setback is experienced, our task will not be forgotten and our responsibilities will not be taken lightly. The hopes and dreams of centuries of men are within our grasp. We must not falter in our quest for them. Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. reflected the dreams of this new era. of this Class of 1970, when, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he expressed with hopefulness: I say to you today, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream, deeply rooted in the American dream ... we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Prot- estants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing . . . We the Class of 1970 accept these ideas - peace, love, freedom, joy for all mankind, yet still upholding the worth and value of the individual — as our responsibilities. We will try to mold these ideas into a new kind of world, with a new kind of thinking, void of all the frustrations and misunderstandings which have existed for so long. Some men see things as they are and ask. Why? I see things as they should be and say, Why not? 11 Edward Cotter Co-editor
