These words of President Truman expressed appreciation for the six years of energetic leadership Miss Ayers served her school, community, end country os choirmon of the Junior Red Cross for the entire city of Somerville. Gentle ond kindly in noture, extremely modest ond conservative in conduct, directing her ambitions to higher goals, always tokirg into consideration the needs of others os well cs her own. Discriminating ond practical; orderly ond methodical; capable and efficient —a tribute given in completion of several yeors of sociol service work among the underprivileged in New Hoven, Ccnn. Our satisfaction with excellent work faithfully done; odmirotion for your friendly ond kindly spirit. Effective service, pcrsonol loyolty, ond kindly cooperative spirit — so wrote the director of the Somerville Recreation Com- mission upon her completion of ten yeors' work os Play Leader on the summer playgrounds of Somerville. A life-long resident of Somerville, o groduotc of Somcrvile High, Miss Ayers corned her B.S. in Education at the Boston University School of Religious Education ond Social Service, later receiving the degree of Moster of Science in the field of Education. The high estate of classroom teoching hos been im- measurably diminished this ycor at Somerville High School by the early retirement of one of our truly olpha foculty members: Alexander J. Austin, Jr. Precisely the sort of authentic scholor-genflcmon that is all too rare these doys in ocodcme and that cny self-respecting compus should appreciate, cherish, ond even fence in in a fiercely proprietory woy, Mr. Austin officially put the period on January 23 to twenty-three years of teaching here at the high school, thereby toking wind from the soil of our cultural kites and very ncorly grounding our clrcody rowboned little bluebird of happiness. The integrity that the man brought to the classroom job will be missed by the entire faculty and student body, but, to be selfish about it, his delightful company will be especially missed by the subterraneon set below-stoirs in the West Building-Basement, down where the corn Ten

is green, where he had his homeroom and classes for so many years, where the patrician, private school look of him was just about the only decor we had. Mr. Austin has been a classroom teacher, a valuable member of the sine qua non set, for his whole professional career. He came to the Somerville schools from the celebrity-scarred desks, through the Romanesque orch, of Harvord's Sever Hall. The credentials were impressive. Honnete homme ond genus Horvordmoniensis to the core, energetically exercised on o Harvard gridiron that wos mythic even in those pre-Gatto doys, ond liberolly edu- cated by the world's most prestigious inti Meets, he brought to the classroom imperatives, and to football coaching, on intellectual and moral reoch thot was o decided benefit ond exomple to the students fortunrtc enough to face him for daily instruction. Mr. Austin served at the Western Junior High School for thirteen y:ars; added o Boston College Master of Arts degree to the Bachelor of Arts in Romonce Languages and Literoturc degree granted by Horvord; ond occeptcd cross-posting to the high school in September 1946. At various times during his twenty-three years on the faculty here, he hos been o floormaster and acting head of the English department, but mostly he hos been thot least expendable, most vitolly ncccssory school worker: the excellent clossrcom teacher. Never porochiol in his interests, never so narrow os to count on teaching olone for personal fulfillment, Mr. Austin will hove no problem finding things to do in retirement. There is a wide rangs of interests, on enviable plurality of marketable skills, and the time now to indulge them. There is th; loveliest of families and o wide circle of friends in private industry ond the professions. There ore the reading ond the traveling that ho hos olwoys done assiduously and adventurously, the exciting trackdown of titans of literature from their cradles to their biers. And there is the exquisite adventure of wotching his lovely grandaughter Melisso get ready for Smith. HEADMASTER Albert H. Giroux, A.B., A.M. 23 Bay State Root!, Belmont VICE-HEADMASTER John P.
