These words of President Truman expressed appreciation for the six years of energetic leadership Miss Ayers served her school, community, end country os choirmon of the Junior Red Cross for the entire city of Somerville. Gentle ond kindly in noture, extremely modest ond conservative in conduct, directing her ambitions to higher goals, always tokirg into consideration the needs of others os well cs her own. Discriminating ond practical; orderly ond methodical; capable and efficient —a tribute given in completion of several yeors of sociol service work among the underprivileged in New Hoven, Ccnn. Our satisfaction with excellent work faithfully done; odmirotion for your friendly ond kindly spirit. Effective service, pcrsonol loyolty, ond kindly cooperative spirit — so wrote the director of the Somerville Recreation Com- mission upon her completion of ten yeors' work os Play Leader on the summer playgrounds of Somerville. A life-long resident of Somerville, o groduotc of Somcrvile High, Miss Ayers corned her B.S. in Education at the Boston University School of Religious Education ond Social Service, later receiving the degree of Moster of Science in the field of Education. For most of her teaching career, she was in the English ond History deportments of SHS; more recently she taught World Cultures in the Social Studies deport- ment. Austin, Jr. Precisely the sort of authentic scholor-genflcmon that is all too rare these doys in ocodcme and that cny self-respecting compus should appreciate, cherish, ond even fence in in a fiercely proprietory woy, Mr. Austin officially put the period on January 23 to twenty-three years of teaching here at the high school, thereby toking wind from the soil of our cultural kites and very ncorly grounding our clrcody rowboned little bluebird of happiness. The integrity that the man brought to the classroom job will be missed by the entire faculty and student body, but, to be selfish about it, his delightful company will be especially missed by the subterraneon set below-stoirs in the West Building-Basement, down where the corn Ten
