These words of President Truman expressed appreciation for the six years of energetic leadership Miss Ayers served her school, community, end country os choirmon of the Junior Red Cross for the entire city of Somerville. Gentle ond kindly in noture, extremely modest ond conservative in conduct, directing her ambitions to higher goals, always tokirg into consideration the needs of others os well cs her own. Discriminating ond practical; orderly ond methodical; capable and efficient —a tribute given in completion of several yeors of sociol service work among the underprivileged in New Hoven, Ccnn. Our satisfaction with excellent work faithfully done; odmirotion for your friendly ond kindly spirit. Effective service, pcrsonol loyolty, ond kindly cooperative spirit — so wrote the director of the Somerville Recreation Com- mission upon her completion of ten yeors' work os Play Leader on the summer playgrounds of Somerville. A life-long resident of Somerville, o groduotc of Somcrvile High, Miss Ayers corned her B.S. in Education at the Boston University School of Religious Education ond Social Service, later receiving the degree of Moster of Science in the field of Education. For most of her teaching career, she was in the English ond History deportments of SHS; more recently she taught World Cultures in the Social Studies deport- ment. As an octivc member of the Forthion Club of Somerville she held the offices of Director, Scholarship Choirmon, ond Vice-President. lJeciclier4 Well-beloved by her students, highly respected by her co-workers. Miss Ayers decided to bring her career of S.H.S. to its culmination on November 30, 1968. As she pursues other interests under more leisurely circumstances, she hos our sincere good wishes for the enjoyment of well-earned doys of rest in the years ahead. MR. ALEXANDER J. AUSTIN, JR. The high estate of classroom teoching hos been im- measurably diminished this ycor at Somerville High School by the early retirement of one of our truly olpha foculty members: Alexander J. Austin, Jr. Precisely the sort of authentic scholor-genflcmon that is all too rare these doys in ocodcme and that cny self-respecting compus should appreciate, cherish, ond even fence in in a fiercely proprietory woy, Mr. Austin officially put the period on January 23 to twenty-three years of teaching here at the high school, thereby toking wind from the soil of our cultural kites and very ncorly grounding our clrcody rowboned little bluebird of happiness. The integrity that the man brought to the classroom job will be missed by the entire faculty and student body, but, to be selfish about it, his delightful company will be especially missed by the subterraneon set below-stoirs in the West Building-Basement, down where the corn Ten is green, where he had his homeroom and classes for so many years, where the patrician, private school look of him was just about the only decor we had. Mr. Austin has been a classroom teacher, a valuable member of the sine qua non set, for his whole professional career. He came to the Somerville schools from the celebrity-scarred desks, through the Romanesque orch, of Harvord's Sever Hall. The credentials were impressive. Honnete homme ond genus Horvordmoniensis to the core, energetically exercised on o Harvard gridiron that wos mythic even in those pre-Gatto doys, ond liberolly edu- cated by the world's most prestigious inti Meets, he brought to the classroom imperatives, and to football coaching, on intellectual and moral reoch thot was o decided benefit ond exomple to the students fortunrtc enough to face him for daily instruction. Mr. Austin served at the Western Junior High School for thirteen y:ars; added o Boston College Master of Arts degree to the Bachelor of Arts in Romonce Languages and Literoturc degree granted by Horvord; ond occeptcd cross-posting to the high school in September 1946. At various times during his twenty-three years on the faculty here, he hos been o floormaster and acting head of the English department, but mostly he hos been thot least expendable, most vitolly ncccssory school worker: the excellent clossrcom teacher. Never porochiol in his interests, never so narrow os to count on teaching olone for personal fulfillment, Mr. Austin will hove no problem finding things to do in retirement. There is a wide rangs of interests, on enviable plurality of marketable skills, and the time now to indulge them. There is th; loveliest of families and o wide circle of friends in private industry ond the professions. There ore the reading ond the traveling that ho hos olwoys done assiduously and adventurously, the exciting trackdown of titans of literature from their cradles to their biers. And there is the exquisite adventure of wotching his lovely grandaughter Melisso get ready for Smith. HEADMASTER Albert H. Giroux, A.B., A.M. 23 Bay State Root!, Belmont VICE-HEADMASTER John P. One Hundrtd Twenty CL oem TRIBUTARY Deborah Gage The stone walls and scuffed stairs, are as much a part of us as the trees and the sidewalks outside. The wooden desks and unwashed boards have printed their shape, color, and purpose, their remnants of other human flesh and youthful words upon our eyes and minds, as trees and sidewalks could not do. Within these walls, upon these stairs, we became the essence of the tide of our lives— the tide that flows from green waters to blue absorbs these things we now ignore. And the tide that ebbs from shore to horizon carries these things we now neglect. At these desks and boards, these scarred and dusty fragments of human turmoil and confusion, we became the essence of the tide of our lives, the tide that flows and ebbs and returns and leaves and never stops, or will not step until freed from some final, symbolic moon. We cannot abolish time and place unless we drink forgetful water, and the spring of forgetful water is deep beneath the earth. One Hundred Twenty-one 2 • hiemor On a sunny September morning in 1966, we, the doss of 1969, took our traditional ploccs os Sophomores. Our bright eogcr faces shone with expectancy and our hopes were high with the prospects of future learning. We renewed old friendships and gradually made new ones. In a short time we felt quite at horn- although we were in owe of the upper classmen. It didn't take us long to discover that there were no elevators, no swimming pools, ond no fourth floor. We took port in extracurricular activities, and soon began the task of electing the leaders of our class. Elected to our Sophomore Executive Boord were Nancy O'Connell, Eva Prodel, Charles DiRusso, and Tom Quaticri. With several members of the Sophomore class on the baseball, football, track ond boskctboll tcoms, our boys played to win, and at all times fought for the honor of S.H.S. We were back again, a wiser and more matured group of Juniors, with good intentions and high hopes to stort the new year. Our first important movement was the election of class officers. When the final count wos taken, we found that our leaders for the ycor were: Lorry Poor, president; Evo Pradal, vice-president; Jeanne Nicolosi, secretory; and Hazelle Talbot, treasurer. The Future Nurses' Club wos quite busy during our Row 1—Sheila Portonovo, Potricto Porker, Charlene Oliphont, Richcrd Orbctt. Row 2—Eva Pradal, Jeanne Nicolosi, Nancy O'Connell, Hozelle Talbot, Lawrence Poor. One Hundred Twenty-two Junior year. They showed us the funniest, most exciting boskctboll gome S.H.S. has ever hod — the Donkey Basketball Game. This proved quite humorous os the football players struggled on the backs of donkeys to defeat the women toochcrs and cheerleaders. Another night never to be forgot:cn during our junior year was the night the Beacon Street Union arrived to cnt;r:oin us. They completely captivoted the audience end left us quite omazed. Then came the Junior Prom, a greot success thanks to our loyal Junior Prom Committee and Junior Class Officers who truly mode it an Impossible Dream. The committee consisted of Nancy O'Connell, Charlene Oli ph:nt, Patricio Parker, Sheila Portanovo, ond Richard Corbett. With o most successful yeor to our credit, thonks to our copable foculty and enthusiastic classmotes, we closed o pleasant junior year, and looked forward to our Senior year with eager anticipation. September was here again, and for the lost time we happily mode our woy to our High School, where we would start the activities of our Senior yeor. It was our turn ot lost to direct the little Sophomores to the lengendary elevotors, our turn to carry on the traditions of past years. For our Senior Class Officers we elected William Lowrcncc Poor, Hozelle Talbot, Eva Pradal, Jconne Nicolosi Cronin, president, Charlcn: Oliphant, vice-president; Keren Loveys, secretory; and Nancy O'Connell, treasurer. We reolly had our shore of sports excitement. Jim Zengo, our football captoin Icod our teom to the Greoter Vice-President Charlene Oliphant, President William Cronin, Secretary Karen Loveys, Treasurer Ncncy O'Canncll. One Hundred Twenty-three Boslon League Championship; our basketball team fought to gain o berth in ths Tech Tourney. Our Student Council, with president Lorry Poor, mode sure our senior year would be filled with fun. They orronged for a ski trip to North Conwoy, New Hampshire. The general consensus for that weekend wos: Whot o blast! Another time never to forget was when the All-Americon Redheads came to S.H.S. to ploy the men faculty. Thot was one bosketball game that won't be soon forgotten. Several of our Drama Club members went through quite o prize-winning streak. Jeanne Nicolosi, Thomas Corso, Sonia Harris and Frank Silva won a place in the All-Star cost of the regional Drama Festival Their per- formance of The Lottery went on to the Massachusetts High School Droma Fcstivol ot the John Honcock Holl where they received a rating of excellent. Soon it wos time to start planning for one of the biggest events during our High School days—our Senior Prom. To serve on the committes we chose Corinne DcVosto, Ralph Fucillo, Paulo Shute, Steve Hersey, Celeste Annese and Chris Johnson. They chr.se Cherished Moments os the theme. Next we chose our Class Day Committee: John Mingle, Joan Marcotti, Jeanne Nicolosi, Chorlcs Siliori, John Tedesco and Mary Toothacher. We then bid goodbye to our days with the Red and Blue, our hearts filled with many pleasant memories ond hopeful dreams. Andrew Solbcrg. Susan Nissonboum, David MrKcnzic, Paul Clifford.
