JOHN CANNON When the High School reconvenes in September, it will be without the services of on outstondmg teacher in the business field. Mr. John Connon hos worked untiringly for over thirty-seven years in the vineyard of the Somerville school system, his work characterized by patience, tact, ond a special sense of humor. He fought for three years at the Western Junior High School, with Dr. George K. Coyne os principal. Feeling thot he would work more effectively with the more moture student, he come to the High School in 1934. His work hos been mainly in the field of bookkeeping, commercial geography, and business low. Mr. Cannon came adequately equipped for this phose of teaching, having received his B.B.A. degree from Boston University. Apart from his contribution to the lives of students, he has been o valuable asset to o number of outstanding business firms. This versatility will serve him in good stead in the years ahead. He leaves with our thanks and best wishes. MR. ARTHUR McMANUS After thirty-one ycors of teaching at Somerville High School, Mr. Arthur McMonus will retire at the end of this school year A graduate of Boston College in 1926, he became a football star under the fomous cooch, Mojor Covanough, ond cs o freshman, ployed agoinst Baylor University in the Cotton Bowl. Later he goined edded fomc by winning the New England Hammer-throwing Championship. After serving os teacher-coach of all sports for ten yeors at Boston College High School, he was appointed os heed football cooch of Somerville High School for 1937, 1938, and 1939. Tufts University awerded him a Mosters Degree in 1951. He resides with his wife ond fomily at 25 Browning Road, Somerville. For God, and school, and country, he seems to us to be The Hoppy Warrior. Fourteen ! etirina TJeaclen MR. FRANCIS X. ROONEY For forty years Mr. Rooney hos served os teacher and os Head of the English Deportment. Students will remember his interesting classes where he simplified the complex topics with diogroms, mops, ond gomes. He shored his ideas ond his work with mony teachers. His friendly visits to closs were welcomed because he always come with o smile and o surprise. Mr. Rooney put up the good fight for high stondords in reoding, writing, ond in speaking. He brightened mony conversations. Dullness wos never o problem when he wos in o clossroom or ot a lunch table. Fortunately, he still retains his enthusiosm for teoching ond his enthusiasm will inspire al! who toughf with him ond who learned from him. MRS. KATHERINE F. McDONNELL Mrs. Katherine F. McDonnell, o member of the French deportment since 1946, will retire from teaching ot the close of the academic year. A native of West Somerville, Mrs. McDonnell received her corly education in the Somerville public schools ond ot Maryclift Academy, Winchester. After graduation from Lowdl Stote Tcochcrs College, she taught for eight yeors in the Chclseo School System, and continued her undergraduote studies ot Boston University and Boston College. After the decth of her husband, she returned to her teaching career in Somerville where she was assigned to the Northcostcrn Junior High School. Here she taught French and Guidance end was also in charge of dramotics end Student Patrol. Mrs. McDonnell continued her grad- uate studies ot Boston University and Boston College ond pursued intensive French courses in France. She received her Master of Arts degree in 1952. For sixteen yeors Mrs. McDonnell sponsored the Ploy- ers' Club ond the Student Potrol ot S.H.S. During these yeors, the Ploycrs' Club entered thirteen ploys in the Boston Globe Dramo Festivol, and through the co-rb ned efforts of the ployers ond Director, o totol of $10,000.00 was awarded to worthy seniors ot graduation. Mrs. McDonnell hos been an octivc member cf the Somerville School Employees Credit Union since its in- ception. Together with veteran Treasurer Richord Fitz- patrick, Mrs. McDonnell os choirmon of the Supervisory Committee since 1949, hos worked for the best interests of the tcochcrs in the city. For fen yeors during the summer months, s1'? wos supervisor also in the Recreation Dept., organizin'� the first Childrens' Theatre Group in the old Clorcndon Club. Mrs. McDonnell is the mother of Lt. Col. Gerald E. McDonnell (S.H.S. '49) who is presently cssipncd to Washington, D.C., ond she has three grandchidrcn. During her doys of retirement, she hopes to devote more time to her grondchildrcn, but from time to time, we hope to sec her returning to substitute in her familiar surroundings. Room 143. Fifteen 3ht ittnmirtant DR. JAMES J. MURRAY The new yeor came to us with o sad foreword: the announcement thot on New Year's Doy itself. Dr. James J. Murroy, a clossroom teacher here at Somerville High School for thirty-two years, hod suffered a fotal heart- attack while homeward bound from evening work as a proofreader for the Herald-Traveler. Dr. Murray's deoth was as he had frequently, smilingly insisted it would be: with the old work boots on. Since no one ever challenged clock ond calendar with o heftier agendo, it was highly unlikely that Dr. Murray would be token from carpet-slippered idle time or any kind of retirement. He wos too much the worker for that. Born in Stoneham, but a resident of Somerville for sixty-two yeors ond a graduate of this school system. Dr. Murrary brought to the English classroom an im- pressive portfolio of unimpeachoble credentials: Bachelor of Science ond Master of Education degrees from Tufts University in 1925 ond 1942, a Doctorate of Philosophy from Boston University in 1950, and an abundance of graduote credits that just Topsy-ed along ot these schools end ot Harvard, with no specific certificates or degrees os goal posts, but simply because he consumed courses in order to be os accomplished os possible at the work he loved. Excitedly, excitingly on the job in Room 24, in o welter of news clips chronicling the forword morch ond backword flips of American education, with chapters of his own book on the same subject scattered anyhow on desk and tables. Dr. Murroy was delightful compony for the students ond teochers who worked most closely with him end who appreciated the well-stocked intellect and the generous heart of the man. His pupils, especially those in Creative Writing—Period Four, a class that wos o special joy to him, got the benefits of his years of newspaper experience and of his bringing himself to book. His faculty neighbors had their work days brightened by conversations thot were gusty with his indignation and laughter os he plucked feathers from the pretentious wingspread of some new, foolishly flighty, brockct-blockening evaluation project by his spendid tolent for friendship. For them. Dr. Murray's best book is not the one now in the hands of o New York litcrory agent; it is their recollection of o good man with whom they were olwoys pleased to work. PAUL. 0. KELLEY In the foil of 1967, the Somerville School Department suffered the loss of Mr. Poul 0. Kelley, for twenty years the Dirctor of Music for the city of Somerville. Adminis- trators, teochers, and students shocked by his untimely death, will long remember his untiring efforts ond his concern for the students. A special memorial program in his honor wos presented in December of this yeor. The proceeds from this per- formance, Four Glistening Notes, were placed in a special account, os were contributions from privote citizens and vorious organizations in the city. A Paul O. Kelly Memorial Scholarship will be awarded by the Music Department to a Somerville High School student selecting music as his college major field of interest. BANK TREASURERS The Thrift Program depends on the group of room treasurers for their cooperation in the tosk of inculcating thrift habits among the student body. It is through the medium of the regulor weekly deposit doys thot they help in making their fellow students realize thot regular savings provide thrift experiences which tend to cultivate intel igent handling of personal affairs. One Hundred Twelve BANK CORPS The High School Bonk, corrying out its functionol role cs headquarters for the School Savings System in the twenty-eight schools of our city, hos been manned by the present members of the Bonk Corps with that degree of efficiency which, of necessity, must characterize the work in the Bonk. Because of the noture of the work involved, all members of the Bonk Corps ore admitted only after careful examination of their qualifications. City-wide, the totol deposits mode in the School Bonk since 1949 under our present system, hove climbed to over $1,465,000. THE AMERICAN JUNIOR RED CROSS The American Junior Red Cross hos just completed fifty years of service. Here ot the high school the stu- dents participate cnnually in such projects as Friendship boxes, disaster bags, or high school chests. The Highlanders' only setback was odministered by Brockton earlier in the season. Somerville opened the seoson by handing Rondolph its FIRST Met League loss in 23 meets.
