By chance we may have thumbed through one of his books and shuddered at the thought that someday we too would have to lug home so many volumes and spend hours and hours on difficult homework. We were warned in the lower grades that high school was very different and that Your high school teachers will never accept a paper like this or when you go to high school you won't play games, you know. Contemplating running away, we would count with apprehension the months, weeks, and days till high school. But now, dear graduates, the impossible has been ac- complished. We did indeed work hard, and our teachers certainly did not accept a paper like that. However, let no graduate of Somerville High say that he did not enjoy the past three years. The good times we had more than compensated for the agony of too much homework or the shock of a surprise exam. We will al- ways remember the exciting Tech Tourneys, the football games, the dances. Talent Night, the Music Department Concert, the crowded lunchroom, and of course the Prom. So, it soon starts all over again. Some of us will go on to college, and some will enter a career despite the same warnings we heard before high school. We are now being told that College is much harder than high school, you know and Wait until you have a boss watching over you every minute. We only hope that the wise will recognize the pattern and will make the change with a more enlightened mind. BUCKLEY £ , eunnci 7 For more thon o third of o century, the holls ond ploying fields of Somerville High School hove been illuminated and warmed by the gcniol personality of Robert F. Buckley. A product of our own schools, he ployed on the athletic teams thot in his day brought fame ond renown to the fair name of Somerville. Together with the late much beloved Charlie Dicker- man, he moved on to Mt. St. Mary's College in Maryland where h; continued the successful coreer in othletics he had begun here. After his groduotion from college, hoving proved his competence m the field of cduc:tion, he returned to his Alma Motor to take up th: duties of a teocher of biology. Shortly thereafter, he added the onerous duties of Fo:ulty Manager of Athletics. Down through the years his gentle patience, his kindly humor, ond his devotion to his work for others have end:ored him to his fellow workers and to thousands of young people who hod the good fortune to come under his beneficent influence. The post of Avon tells us that parting is such sweet sorrow. The sorrow of his departure from our midst is sweetened only by the happiness we hove enjoyed in the grocc of his friendship ond the inspiration he hos engendered in us. MISS MARY CANAVAN This June, 1966, marks the resignation of Miss Mary Conovan from the Faculty. A graduate of Emmanuel College, she was appointed to the High School in November, 1929. Three yeors lotcr she eorned her M A degree ot Boston College. Her thirty- seven years of tcoching hove been devoted to our Somerville High School students. It hos been o happy, successful career. Miss Ccnovan will be fondly remembered by her many former pupils and certainly will be greatly missed by her associates. As for us, the Class of 1966, we are especially pleased to welcome her os o member of our graduating class. MR. MELVIN T. CARVER Ending a tcoching and coaching career which began on October 1917, Mr. Melvin T. Corvcr retires os of June 1966. During his corccr mony boys and young men hove gone on to moke their names in sports. Some who were taught by Mel Corvcr the fundamentals of foir ploy ore not only numbered among the living but also omong the honored dcod of our country MR. PHILIP Philip L Holmes greduoted with Honor from Somerville High School in 1920. and Cum loude from Horvord University in 1924. He olso received his Moster's degree with honors from Harvard, and hos studied ot the Sorbonne in Paris, ond at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin. Before joining the faculty of Somerville High School in Sept. 1933 he taught in the Deportment of German at Trinity College He inaugurated the French progrom in the evening classes at Northeostern University, and hos taught French, German, and To enumerate the mony achievements of this tcocher-cooch would fill volumes. Although he Icovcs the school system, he leaves with us a heritage of character and sportsmanship. We reflect the feelings of all those who knew him in wishing him mony years of happiness in his retirement. Mony of us ore much better men ond women for having known Mel and our lives arc much richer because he passed our woy. L. HOLMES Sponish ot Lincoln Preparatory School (a branch of Northeostern University). He has also been on the faculty of the Huntington Preparatory School for many summers. In the High School, before teaching Germon and French, he tought Spanish and Italian for ssverol yeors. Hoving traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Carribean Islands, he is looking forward to trips to other ports of the world in the future. 10 MISS VIOLA JACKSON Not often do the right person ond the right position come to- gether. Miss Violo Jockson cchieved this hoppy situotion. As Heod of the French Deportment she brought not only o fine scholastic bockground (A.B. ond A.M. Rodcliffe) but on enthusi- astic support of oil school ond professional activities. Miss Jackson's keen ond discerning interest in Dramatics wos evidenced in her tireless work with the Ployers' Club for seventeen years ond her crcotion of the Hornet M. Bell Scholarship Fund. An ordent football, baseball, ond boskctboll fon, she knew her athletics, end her enthusiosm wos genuine. Many o Somerville boy in the Armed Forces of World War II wos cheered by the letters she somehow found time to write. Mony o sick person ot Boston City Hospitol and the Vctcron's Hospitol is grateful for her untiring services as o Nurse's Aide. Her love of trovel, (an honorary citizen of Nautico, Fronce) brought extro life end knowledge to her closses. Europe, Asio, ond the U. S. were fomilior hounts of the little lody of 141 . Yet, obove everything else. Violo Jockson wos first ond lost o teocher. Glodly did she learn ond glodly teach! The student body of S.H.S. end the foculty solute you! MISS HAZEL L. SMITH Miss Hozel L. Smith is o groduote of Somerville High School, where she wos president of her closs. She received her higher education ot Massachusetts College of Art, which she served later os President of the Alumni Association. Throughout her coreer she hos been ective in stotc ond notionol Art Education Associations. Miss Smith's superior tolcnt ond training hove been evident well beyond the confines of the classroom. Mony pupils trained in her closses hove mode art o life career. Projects expond from room 145 into local ond distont com- munities. She hos hod the gratification of watching skilled ond interested students progress in ond beyond Somerville High School ond achieve gools new to them. Within the school each graduating class for years has seen the Cinderella-like transformation of our plain utilitarian gymnasium into the fairyland setting of the Senior Prom. Actuolly no foiry- godmother's wond hos brought this obout. Every student ottending owes on additional thonk you to Miss Smith when he soys goodbye to her ond to Somerville High School. MR. JOSEPH B. WEENE In November of the post school year Mr. Joseph B. Weene resigned from the teaching profession offer thirty-two yeors of being o member of the History Deportment ot Somerville High. Mr. Weene himself wos o graduate of S.H.S. in the closs of 1925. In 1932 he graduated from Boston University with o B J. and went on to Tufts University to eom his M.Ed. in 1934. The previous year morked the beginning of his coreer ot Somerville High, ond now he begins o well-deserved retirement. We ot S.H.S. thonk ond congratulate Mr. Weene. With a song . . . STUDENT COUNCIL The football rally initiated by the Student Council. 18 Another council production: The Good Guys vs. S.H.S. Faculty basketball game. One of the most populor ond certoinly the busiest of the orgoni- zotions ot Somerville High is our Student Council. Under the direction of Miss Frances Accorto, the council literally adds its two-ccnts to countless funds, donees, ond other school functions. Among this year's activities were o scholarship dance, on un- forgettable basketball game between the S.H.S. faculty ond the WMEX Good Guys, ond o spirited rally before the onnual Thanksgiving Doy game. When it came to business the council proved successful in re- writing o Student Council Constitution, conducting elections for all class officers ond Prom and Closs Doy Committees, assisting Mr. Donohoc in the United Fund Compoign, end selling High- londer book covers. Reviving a custom of many years, our closs olso saw o change in the council itself in that from now on o representative from every homeroom will be elected to serve on the Student Council, ond idea which will certoinly bring the council closer to the student body. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Our Future Teachers Club at S.H.S. is part of o notionwide orgonizotion, the Future Teochers of America, for those students who intend to enter the field of education. Under the guidonce of Mr. Francis Thornton ond Miss Kathoryn McConn the club met every Thursday in the cofeterio. This ycor members thought it beneficiol to listen to several S.H.S. practice teochers from colleges os Salem Stote, Boston College, ond Northcostcrn University speak on their experiences in education. The club also held a Past Officers Doy when former officers of the F.T.A. returned to report on whether or not President of F.T.A. NANCY DISCHINO they actually hod entered teoching, ond if so to give their opinions on it. Members attended the F.T.A. Convention held at Boston University along with fellow future teochers from other cities. After the convention they were given o tour of B.U. and offended a tea. Social activities included a Christmas porty, o scholarship dance, ond the club‘s activities ended with o banquet for members. Officers were President Nancy Dischino, Vice-President Jean Vacoro, Recording Secretary Morcio Tucci, Corresponding Secretory Evelyn Ashey, and Treasurer Donna Loriscy. 22 Future statesmen . . . TEEN CITIZENS ADMINISTRATION The Teen Citizens Administration is for High School students throughout the city who ore interested in government at o municipal level. Sponsored by the Somerville B.P.O. Elks, the administration met twice o month to discuss civic problems with city officials. Of course, the most cnticipoted event is the election of o Junior Mayor to take Mr. Bretto's scot during o designated Student Government Day. This yeor the honors were bestowed upon Bruce Shlager, President of the Somerville High Chapter, after an all- out political rally in the High School ouditorium. Another function of the T.C.A. is the participation in the Stu- dent Exchange Progrom, in which students from the High School become guests of o town to become acquainted with town govern- ment. This yeor Noncy Dischino, Leo Gortlond, Bruce Shloger, Poul Von Stecnsburg, Chorlcs Shubow, and Allon Nisscnboum, accompanied by Advisor Richard Anderson, were token by mem- bers of Morbltheod High School on a tour of that town. Under the direction of Miss Violo Jockson the club's moin concern is the study of French culture. To help in this study Le Cercle Leclerc invited two guest speakers to lecture on life in Frcnce. As o social function the club ran a dance, the proceeds of which went to a scholarship fund. French Club officers for the year were President Ronald Silvestri, Vice-President George Stovrinos, Secretory Loretta Traniello, and Treasurer Stephen Gonchor. FRENCH CLUB 26 . . . to the Tower of Pisa ITALIAN CLUB Advised by Mr. Louis DeAngelis, the Italian Club proposes to unite those students who ore interested in the Itolion language end culture. Highlighting this year was on inspiring lecture on Languoges in College by Professor Figurito of Boston College. The club also held its usual parties, movies, ond a scholarship dance ond on severol occasions met with the French Club for activities. It is composed of boys under the direction of Mr. Gerard Donahoe who ore eager to serve their community. This year the club held two cor woshes, sold Highlander Pen ond Pod sets, collected for the United Fund, polished the 79 school trophies in our librory, oided the Kiwcnis Club in conducting o Christmos Porty for the underprivileged children of the city, ond President of Key Club LELAND HOWARD set up Christmos decorations ot the Somerville Garden Center. Every other week two members attended a Kiwonis luncheon ot Cabot Forms, ond five members were chosen to ottend the annual New England District Convention of Key Clubs ot the Stotler Hilton Hotel. PLAYERS' CLUB 32 Free Speech PORTIA DEBATING SOCIETY Portia is o debating society for girls, especially those who possess the Gift of Gab. Under the supervision of Miss Cothlocn Curron, the club met every Fridoy in Room 210. In the past year members complied with the club's unwritten low: to debote, discuss, deduce, and draw conclusions. Subjects probed include: Drcoms and Their Meanings, Coreers in Business Administration, Fashion Designing, and Elementary Teach- ing, ond Madame Ghandi as Premier of India. However, Portia is not just a lot of talk. Members olso attend vorious ploys, concerts, and museums, besides sponsoring several dances per yeor. This year the donees were Portio's Plymouth Rock held at Thanksgiving time, ond Portia Presents the Huns feauturing a local musical group. What ever profit is received from the dances goes back into the society ond olso to provide some members with scholarships. Since all the work is hondled by students, the opportunity is efforded them to gain practical experience in business procedure and bonk routine. The privilege of working in the school bonk is gronted only to those who hove good scholastic records and who desire to gain a working knowledge of business methods. We, the, fons were provided with many exciting moments os the season drew to o close, and hopes for the Tech begon to fodc. The only two reol veterans from lost year's State Chompionship team were Andy DiDomenico ond Jim Killoren. The whole season hinged on the pitch- ing, and this yeor's staff was almost sure to show some surprises. Besides Killoren, there were lost year's number one reliever. Behind the plate there wos Emil Monfra, who improved tre- mendously over lost seoson, ond wos recognized for his oll-oround hustle. From behind the plate. 101 Hockey The unfovoroble record of the 1966 season shouldn't discredit the S.H.S. Hockey Teom. They hod the desire and the will, but they lacked facilities, they lacked a sufficient number of players, and most of all they lacked student support. There should be no criticism, for most people connot even ice skote well, let alone play o lightning-fast gome of hockey. These boys practiced for one hour about three nights a week oil seoson. For the first fifteen minutes they would skote to loosen up and increase their speed and breathing. Then they either hod a scrimmage or practiced shooting, passing, and ploys. For the lost ten minutes they would skote ct top speed to build up their endurance. Co-Captain Nick Tzannos, who was chosen as an All-Star in th® G B.L. was also the high scorer on the team with 14 points. Some high schools are just plain unlucky. On Septem- ber 22 at 10:00 a.m., just about a year after a plane plowed into the East Building, disaster again struck Som- erville High. Some say it was an earthquake, others don't know, but whatever it was left thirty unfortunate students with some of the goriest injuries since Ben Hur . Strang- est of all was the sight of several sadistic-looking men with note pads and cameras who prowled the deserted corridors callously snapping photos of the victims. Of course it was all a game, but a very serious one. The object: to test the preparation and coordination of the disaster-combatting agencies of Somerville, including Civil Defense, the Somerville Hospital, the Red Cross, and the various municipal departments. The scorekeepers: the previously mentioned Civil Defense evaluators. Although the drill was not the best kept of secrets, this was certainly no time for levity. Our victims did a commendable job of producing groans to match their artificial injuries. Having been scattered around the build- ing, they had to assume varying degrees of conscious- ness and pain, which most managed to maintain while they were led, helped, or carried through the simulated smoke to one of the waiting stream of ambulances, rushed to the Somerville Hospital, and brought to the proper treatment area. 113 A champ Somerville High has been honored to hold a champion within its walls. He's Mike Jacques, championship roller- skater, celebrated in many newspaper articles and a well- known sports magazine, in which he was named Athlete of the Month. He began skating when he was just six years old at the familiar Bal-a-Roue. He soon joined a club in Revere and started competition in juvenile events, eventually skating his way up to the Senior events. Last year Mike spent a weekend at Bakersfield, California, passing the time by winning the World Gold Skate Classic in the Senior Men's Single Events. Last July in Lincoln, Nebraska Mr. Jacques received four medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) in the North American Championship. Just this winter Mike was given a five week tour of New Zealand (you may have noticed his tan), concluding his vacation by defending the Gold Skate Classic, and recently was named Skater of the Year by the New England Chapter of Rollerskating. Presently he skates at Norwood Roll-Land , in case you'd like to catch him in action. Award winners, 65 Five worthy Juniors were honored at the annual Awards Assembly, held last June. Ronald Silvestri re- ceived the Harvard Book Prize and the Phi Beta Kappa Book Prize, which was also awarded to Margherife Bona- ventura and Leland Howard, as the three most outstand- ing members of the Class of '66. Frederick Rackmil received the German Book Prize from the German Consulate in Boston, and Jack Ronayne was presented with the Somerville Journal's Hockey Award. Mr. Giroux presided over the assembly.
