Hoban, history teacher, building master, good friend, ond compelling advisor to thousands of Somerville High School students through thirty-eight years of dcdicoted service to the academic community. A lifelong resident of the city, born ond raised in the Ward Two boiliwick which he represented oldcrmonically ond with distinction during his and the calendar's corly twenties, Mr. Hcban greduated from Somervillee High School in 1914. An especially evid student of Lotin and Bernard R. Moulton Bernard R. Moulton wos elected a Physicol Education teacher of Somerville High School in 1928. He retired in December, 1963. Before coming to Somerville, he wos Assistant Physical Director at the Y.M.C A. in Roonoke, Virginia, ond in 1927 wos elected Physicol Director of Education in the Providence Public Schools. Over the years his pupils have been given the oppor- history, subjects which he was to teach severol years later in the Boston and Somerville school systems, he neverthe- less found time for proficient involvement in athletics, os on end on the football squad and cotchcr for a trophy- winning baseball team thot included John Norton, John Mitchell, end Wolter Whittaker. The lively interest in competitive sports has persisted for a lifetime, for to this day Mr. Hoban is in the vanguord of rooters whenever Somerville teams toke to diamond, gridiron, court, and track, ond no one is o more orticulote Mondoy morning quarterbock of Friday and Saturday ploys. He prepared for his teaching career of Boston College, which he groduoted with o Bachelor of Arts degree in 1919, his Junior yeor of undergroduoto work hoving been interrupted by service in the United States Navy. Groduate credits in history ond government ot Boston College, in education ot Colvin Coolidgc, ond in corporation law and finance ot Horvord's School of Business Administration subsequently earned him his Mostcr of Education degree. Cross-posted from the Boston schools, Mr. Hobon be- come o teacher of Lotin and history at Somerville High School in October, 1926. He wos appointed Moster of the West Building in 1934. Juniors at Somerville High School during the thirty- eight yeors thot are telescoped into o few porogrophs of biology will remember Mr. Hoban with o very speciol offection. His interest in their pitching orms and T- fomotions, their tordy and truant steps, their little follies and large crises, the coronation of their prom kings and queens hos made him o very riband in the cap of youth . They ond oil his friends on the faculty wish him o hoppy, heolthful retirement. tunity to keep themselves physically fit, fit to leorn, fit to understood, to grow in grace ond stature, to fully live. The level of physicol fitness of oil his pupils wos his constont concern. Mr. Moulton wos an invigoroting and understanding mart; furthermore he wos an excellent example of the subject he loved most, physicol fitness. May the yeors of his leisure, away from the romping exuberance of S.H.S. boys expending their energy on the bars end ropes of the gymnasium, be rewording in restful contemplation of a hard job well done.
