CoL oiman For a hundred yeors Somerville High School has served our community, and we are proud of this fact. But there is no pride in institutions apart from pride in the men who hove served them, and given to them their character. We honor in this 1952 Yeorbook a man who for thirty-seven yeors has served this school faith- fully ond well. When Irving Colmon come to our school in 1915, he brought with him the experience of five yeors of teaching. But he brought much more. The United States, whose history he elected to teach hos been not merely a textbook course but a live and vital subject. His scholarship — for he is a scholor as well os a teacher — hos been enlivened for him by the fact thot his family roots lie deep in its history. His first Col- mon ancestor had settled in Scituote in 1637. In o day of self-advertisement ond loud confus- ions, strength con be found as it alwoys hos been found in the quiet, deep springs of the human personality and spirit. The real builder, whether he foshions a fine sailing vessel or a fine character and example, docs this only through quiet, persistent effort, through a care- ful economy of time and labor, through constant, precise selection, To be New Englond is to get up eorly And make the most of the doy. It is to spend Speech, labor, time ond oil essentials dearly; Rarely to buy ond patiently to mend. If is good to have had in our school a man whose troits of character stand for so much that is good in our New England heritage: self-containment; industry; sobri- ety; a sense of direction (os we should expect from one who comes from a long line of navigators); o man to whom true north is not merely o compass point. — 13 —
