We must put pettu grievances behind tts and learn to stand shoul- der to shoulder with others who are facing the danger which now threatens our generation. How strongc the first doy of school eighty-three ycors 090 would seem to us! At thot time, sixty-thrcc pupils were odmitted to the school in comparison to the more than 2600 who now enter our high school doily. On May 3, 1852, two teachers conducted the first session in Somerville Free High School The hcadmostcr then wos Robert Bickford. His excellent record has been upheld by such men as Leonard Wolkcr, Somuel Pike, Isoac Beols, Henry Babcock, George Boxter, Charles Whit comb, John Avery, Horry Sears, and of course, our present headmaster, Albert Giroux. 1 Having outgrown its first building, in 1872, the school moved into the building loter known os the Somerville Lotiri School. 8ecouse enrollment continued to increase rapidly, the Somerville English High School was built in 1895 When Mr. Boxtcr resigned, the two schools were united making one Somerville High School. In 1912 the enrollment increased to approximately 2,000, and three years later Junior High Schools were built Then the Senior High School was changed to a three year school. A plan wos odopted in 1927 for the enlargement and improvement of the school ond for the oddition of o gym. This work was completed in 1930 at an expenditure of $1,000,000. Since then our school has strived to mointain its high stondord of Honor ond Progress. Moy it continue to do so in the future and hold the honored place it has attained. Not one of the staff members will ever forget the odventures he has experienced in the land of journalism during the last yeor. Each member has learned how to cooperote with others in order to achieve the best possible results. This lesson is, in itself, invaluoble. All the honors thot could possibly be due an editor are showered on John Russell, whose leadership, potience, kindness, ond thoughtfulness knit the group in the friendship and hormony needed to publish a first-rote yearbook successfully. H. S. has finally orrived — groduotion is here. Even during the last doys of our high school career, we moy hove joked about wanting to finish school. But now, olmost everyone cannot help but feel o slight pang of melancholy at parting from the intimate and cherished friends of high school doys. It is our most sincere hope that the 1951 Yearbook will help you to remember fondly your friendships at S. H. S. Since Class Doy, 1950, when the first condids were taken, work on our Yeorbook hos pro- gressed steadily. Before school closed lost June, many important problems had to be discussed and resolved — the general atmosphere of the book, the type of Senior loyout ond any possible deviation from post form — to mention only o few Since September, o round of collecting and filing dota, identifying ond posting glossies, checking names in organization groups, and proof- reading hos kept the Yeorbook Stoff humming with activity ond anticipation. Our closs color — the gorgeous red that spurs us ahead — is unfortunately o rather dif- ficult companion. Nevertheless, we hove tried to use enough of it so that it is outstanding, yet not overpowering. The general plan of our Yearbook, with regord to layout, is quite similor to that of 1949, with the addition of o new type of content poge, o greoter division of the activity section, ond more consistent group picture size. Here is the story of your high school life — a post-graduate course to which you will sub- scribe ogain ond again over the years. Of course we will feel tremendously proud and pleased to see your smiles on Class Day os you see condids and formol pictures of your friends, but if, in ten or fifteen years, we might see the fond tecr or heer the -sly chuckle as you gaze ot this record of your younger doys, we would feel more than amply rev.aided ■ r the effort we moy hove expended on your record -- the Yearbook of the Class of 1951. MacPHERSON Faculty Adviser After formal Class Day Ceremonies, graduates gather on the campus to look over their Yearbooks Do June 4. six hundred twenty graduates receive their long awaited diplomas at Tufts Dval e . —senior In 1948 we were apprehensive sophomores, frightened by thot sprowling, red brick build- ing that loomed so cold and friendless on the hill. Our fears were somewhat colmed when we learned thot many previous sophomore classes experienced this some feeling. We were told that gradually we would become occustomed to our new center of activity. Probobly the first big step from our shell of timidity wos the election of the Sophomore Executive Committee. Our representatives were Anthony Nosson, Mary Korogeorges, William Wolsh ond Ida Brigida. In the fall we returned to the hill os juniors. Now the Seniors were not so oloof and we laughed ot the frightened tenth groders. Were we ever so young looking? We were new more important factors of our group. We took port in mony of the school organizations and many of our members began to assume leadership in vorious fields. We hod our fovorite footboll ployer, our class singer, and o Mr. Basketball. For more important than these things, however, was the fact thot we were making new friends, friends we saw only on the hill. This Junior year wos one of accomplishments. The basketball teom again won the coveted Tech Tourney crown and some of our members were elected to the Notional Honor Society. Then come the Junior Prom. The committee composed of Chairman Frank Henry, Florence Williamson, Ido Brigida, William Walsh and Dixie Walker were responsible for o memorable night. Earlier in the yeor we had elected for our Junior Closs Officers: President, Anthony Nosson; Vice-President, Mary Korogeorges; Treasurer, Thomos Robertson; ond Secretory, Joon Doley. September 1 950 and the Senior year pounced upon us from out of nowhere. The sudden- ness left us no time in which to reflect We were caught in on entirely new world. We had more decisions to make both individually and as a class. We had more functions to attend, we needed more money and we had more friendships to cultivate. For some the senior year dragged tediously; for others it moved ot breakneck speed. As always, the realization downed that graduation would end the trudge to the hill, would end all sports participation, ond would end the mony friendships thot we hod mode during our three yeor visit ot Somerville High. All these thoughts come too late If only we had it to do over....................... This year we elected for our Senior Closs Officers, President - Anthony Nosson; Vice- President, Mory Korogeorges; Treasurer, Thomos Robertson; and Secretary, Joan Daley. Our excellent bosketboll team just missed capturing another Tech Tourney title. We were proud to soy thot they were our representatives in the tourney. The Scholarship Ploy, Angel of Red Canyon , proved to be one of the most outstanding events of the school yeor. In Moy we elected a Senior Night Committee with Choirman Michael Tarantino, Joan Billings, Ida Brigtdo, John Heneghon, ond Gunnel Thorell. This group prepared for our big night For the prom the gym was dccorotcd in o modernistic penthouse design Soft lights, good music, ond handsome couples spelled a very successful evening. Another committee hod the tosk of planning our lost day ot Somerville High This com- mittee consisted of Chairman Fronk Henry, Rita Ryan, Eunice Colesa, James Jensen and Wil ham Wolsh. Now we have groduoted. Three yeors have passed. Years of happy moments that passed too quickly. Years replete with excitement, apprehension, happiness ond friends. Years that hove become part of us Yeors which we know will never be forgotten. A day that some seniors will remember chiefly os the last day of secondary school; others, os their lost day at Somerville High, ond others, os a wonder- ful climox to twelve enjoyoble school years! The hockey team had such outstanding sophomores as Edmund Poole, Anthony Cofferty, Jack De Celles, and Robert Chop- mon, while Gene Deody deserves great praise for being the only sophomore to moke the first team in basketball The sophomores were well represented in the musical organizations. Webster, under the direction of Mr. Hickey and offi- cers Joseph Murroy, Walter Jackson, Albert Woodman and Harvey Thomos held informal debates on current problems. The two clubs combined to send Anita DiNitto, Mary Drougas, Joseph Murroy, and Walter Jackson to the Tour- nament Debate at Waltham in April. They were outstanding in this debate and showed their fine training and innate ability. 104 — The Junior Red Cross council officers for 1950-1951 were Jonet Fuoco, president; Lorroine Norton, vice-presi- dent, Virginia Humber, Student Council representative and secretory. The Junior Red Cross membership drive wos held in November. Part of the money was used for motenols pur- chased in Somerville to moke gay favors and toys in the schools for the Children's and Veterans' hospitals. Jonet Fuoco and Virginia Humber hove worked at Boston Red Cross headquarters where they were trained os leaders. Virginia worked at the Blood center last summer. Other students did secretarial work and courier work for head- quarters. In May o group from the high school went to the leaders' comp in Sharon. Since the clerical work connected with the deposits made in the School Bank in all the schools of the city is concentrated in the High School Bank, the Bank Corps has an exceptional opportunity to gain experi- ence in practical work and give service at the some time. I he members of the Bonk Corps, carefully chosen for their qualifications to engage in this important work, gave cn excellent accounting of themselves by their effici- ent work in handling all the details. An idea of the magnitude of the work con be gamed from the fact that, since the opening of the School Bonk lost year under our new system, 10,264 accounts have been opened through- out the city. A sense of honor, as well as of pride in careful and cccurote work, has characterized the Bank Corps. — 108 — With the help of faculty librarian Mr. Richard Obcor, the twenty-two library assistants, consisting of eleven Sopho- mores, ten Juniors and one Senior, performed their tasks for the improvement of the library. These jobs included filing catalog cards, preparing new books for circulation, doting circulation cards, making out ond delivering overdue book notices, and keeping circulation and ottendonce records. Their efficiency and willingness to cooperate made their help more pleasant and doubly useful. When pupils discovered that the library was an excel lent and a useful place in which to look up material for research and projects, the library become a popular place in which to spend study periods. Anyone needing help re- ceived it from willing hands. Many of these pupils will probably go on to careers as librarians. The many compli- ments it received and the growing demands for its perform- ances prove the sincerity of its efforts. During the seoson in the Greater Boston Leogue, Captain Gil Rice led his teom to thirteen wins ond only one defeat, this at the hands of Quincy. At the close of the season we were tied with Quincy for the league leod ond os a result shared the Greater Boston League Championship, thus automatically receiving an in- vitotion to the Tech Tournomcnt. In the final game of the tourney we were defeated by Quincy by two points. Jim Papo- luco's educated toe, and Bob Eriksen's running ability greatly helped the cause. The team participated in the Metropolitan Track League ot the East Newton Street Armory in Boston and in three lorge meets in the Boston Garden: the Northcostern, State, and Greater Boston Interscholastic Meets. In the Greater Boston Meet, Coptain Jim Connors led the squad to second place in the Senior Division, first in the Sophomore-Freshmon, ond third in the fmol standing. The track team must overcome two difficulties which would discourage o less hordy group of boys. Leading the teom was captain and high scorer Fred Talbot, who inspired the teom to fight its way through the seoson agoinst very strong opponents. The work wos not in vain, for our girls' basketball team ottoined a record os laudable as that of the boys. The girls worked together smoothly os o team, indi- cating that they thoroughly appreciated the time and efforts of Miss Snell, Mrs. Boudreau, and Miss Cavctta, the faculty coaches. The team went forword to win a number of its sched- uled gomes.
