The coaching staff believes they gained valuable experience and learned to play well together. They developed more appreciation for one another's abilities and also improved in having a positive ap- proach tothe game. The team finished strong with three victories in a row, over North Hunterdon, Franklin, and Hillsboro. Offensive standouts were backs Bill German, Ben Thompson, and Matt Buckelew and linemen Eirik Hergert, Phil Ocampo, Steve Stabile, Craig Stires, Dave Wilbur, and Ralph Sena. Outstanding defensive performances were made in the secondary by Kurt Lange, Dave Pomrinca, Ben Thompson, and in the linebacker area Steve Savoye, Herm Proctor, Al lntili, Ralph Sena, and Matt Buckelew. We are looking to big things from this group next year. Congratulations on a very good year to all the team members. The Staff Upper Left: Ralph crushes his opponent. All three losses were by one touchdown or less. Throughout the season these players were enthusiastic and they worked extremely hard to develop their football skills to the best of their ability. The players have the potential to develop into an outstand- ing football team. one hundred thirteen one hundred fourteen VW M..,..,:.. .Q ie., . ,.. .. 1 -l In . . ...ex -.----W' --- v- M-my Y - M-A ,wi K -K :rw ' . f , . Overall the team improved very much since last year. They won their first varsity game and developed great team spirit. Unfortunately, four games were lost by only one point. The major goal of the team was to win 500A of their games which was not met. Another goal was to develop underclassmen as a nucleus for next year. The team's expectations for next year are to win its Mid-State division. They finished third this season, par- tially due to injuries to key players. Max Jarmillo was injured and Diego Gomez missed half the season. There were good points this season. They defeated their biggest rival, Vorhees. ln their best game, the team defeated South Plainfield by a score of 5-0. Wayne Davis had two assists. The best players this year were Wayne Davis, who had eight goals, five assists, and, as a result, was named to the second All- County teamg and German Gomez had three goals, five assists, and was named to third All-County team. Their most improved player was defender Doug Ftienhart. Except for Wayne and Nerbert Fox, the en- tire team returns for what looks to be a very promising '84 season. Upper: Kick that ball, Steve! Lance Walton Skilled Underclassmen The JV Soccer team started the season with a 4-1 record and were looking forward to a very suc- cessful season. However, the team suffered losses of key players due to injuries and some roster changes. The final record of 5-10-1 does not reflect the success of this year's team. Leading players this year were co-captains Mark Johnson, Darren Rodriquez and Rich Rossomon- do on offense. The defense was led by co-captain Steve Giovanelli and goalies Scott Axmann and Bill Brown. Coach Colavita is looking forward to an improved season next year. Division Champs The 1983 girls cross country team finished with an outstandingecord of 13-1. Their goal for the season was met by returning to the all-group meet for the second year straight, and next year, they hope to return for a third straight year. The best runners on the team were Katy Reh, Patty McCormick, and Carolyn Thierfelder. KT and Patty both made the Mid-State team. This was Katy's sec- ond year on the Mid-State team. A major part of the squad will return next year along with Debbie Antonides, who was the team's most improved runner. The team almost doubled in size this year with eight freshmen. Injuries were abundant this season, but the team's depth and spirit prevailed, and they overcame their problems to win the Mid-State Conference Raritan Division Championship. They placed second in the Somerset County Meet and Group 2 State meet. They also placed third in the Shore Invitational Meet and the Mid-State Meet. The GirI's Cross Country team deserves a lot of credit for their fantastic season and excellent effort. Upper: Here's the cheat sheet you wanted. Mid State Champs Led by senior Michele Galka, junior Pam Tocci, sophomores Kelly Radziewicz and Heidi Bauer, and freshman Jenny Regan and Tracy Copeland, the SHS Gymnastics team had another fantastic season. Perhaps the most exciting meet was gainst Hunterdon Central. Behind, throughout the meet, the team came back to tie the score, thus clinching the Mid-State onference Co-Championship. The Ville's other big rival, East, was conquered as was everyone else, leading to a very im- ressive 9-0-1 season record. As the year progressed, the routines improved, aiding the team in their quest for Mid-State and County Championship ities, and allowed the team to qualify for the state meet. Unfortunately an injury caused the team to be ranked 11th in the state because they were unable to supply a complete team. Three gymnasts had outstanding seasons: Michele placed third all-around in the county and was named to the Mid-State :onference first all-around team. Heidi came in first at the county meet and was also named to the Mid-State Conference irst all-around team. Kelly placed second on bars and third on vaulting at the county meet. Expectations for next year are high. The team wants to keep the titles won this year and improve their state standing. 'hese goals should be easily reached because, with the exception of Michele, everyone will return next year. Also, more reshmen got competitive experience this year to aid them in the future. The Pioneer wishes the gymnasts success in the uture. one hundred twenty-five one hundred twenty-six Top Row flett to rightj: Liz Allen, Missy Gottlieb, Chris Finne, Anne Groninger, Chrissy Daly, Leslie Nevius. Heather Quick went from second in doubles to second in singles. The whole team has become stronger in singles. The girls lost to their rival, East. They hope to improve on last year's record, be more competitive and have more fun together. Kris McAIoon The 1983-84 J.V. Basketball team was comprised mainly of sophomores. In terms of winning and losing they were four victories better than a year ago. Our main area of concern was team concept. We worked hard with the total game, of- fense, transition, and defense. Leaders on the team were Butch Davidson, most assists, Paul Fisher, top rebounderg John Voytek, steady performerg and Ben Thompson, all-around player. Pat Balunis and Kris McAIoon contributed heavily to the success until they were elevated to the varsity earlier in the season. Herm Proctor, Zoran Milich, Pete Talke, Ray Davis, and Ken Ciccotelli, rounded out this year's squad. Coach Anderson summed up this season perfectly. The team improved their teamwork more and more with each game, enabling them to play well together. This togetherness paid off by pulling them through some close games. A team that can attest to the strengthened teamwork is Immaculata. We suffered our only loss to them in overtime by 2 points the first time we played them, but our freshmen came back in the next two games to beat them. The last win accomplished the major goal of the team: to beat lmmaculata in the final game scheduled against them. Perhaps the next biggest benefiting factor was the large team and a strong bench. Put all the advantages together and you get a super team. The freshmen finished with an astonishing 21 wins and 1 disappointing loss by 2 points in overtime. Wrestling Squad, Considering that the team was comprised mostly of freshmen with little or no experience the team ended the season with a .500 record. Two upperclassmen, John Donnally and Doug Leubner won their weight classes in the Novice Tournament. The most improved wrestlers were sophomore Clinton Mundy and Curt Lange. A problem encountered this year was lack of numbers. The team had to forfeit three weight classes which affected the team's wins and losses. Next year looks very promising, according to Coach Tom Robinson, since most of the team will return and next year's freshmen will hopefully fill the forfeited weight classes. one hundred forty-one ,n xg d Q xv 5 s Qs ' has J' 7 ka 91 V . ,.xA A UswffQf.ix:nQa.aeiw:-m,:wx.wxJa 1?
