Our entire lives are guided by three basic forces: to seek, to find, to share. From the classroom, to the football field, to the stage, we seek victory and success in all our endeavors. Whether we win or lose, succeed or fail, we lind something of value which will help us to triumph in future struggles, We must share both our victories and defeats with all those who support us in our attempts to reach those goals which we seek, for the sharing of our strengths and skills, weaknesses and deficiencies, is the key to the advancement of all mankind. In their search for perfection, both teachers and students inevitably encounter pain or discouragernentg and yet efforts continue to be made because of an unending desire for self-improvement. Perhaps more important than the goals we reach is the joy we find in reaching them, Such joy accompanies every achievement, whether it be as momentous as being crowned football queen, or perhaps as unnoticed as finding an answer on the slide rule. This joy is a part of that inexplicable phenomenon called finding oneself -be it plung- ing over a wall at the goal line or painting a picture in the art room. Whatever we find-even if it is only the right to say, I tried -the joy of discovery is perhaps greater than the discovery itself. ,,,.....4--M 6 -J l 5 f QU 9 9 10 l Tajik The guidance counsellor, the coach, the teacher - each attempts to share with the student his knowledge and experience. At the same time students share with each other their ideas and their companionship, their moments of victory and defeat. Perhaps this is the most important part of education-learning to live with others. Without it there would be no happiness, and to seek or to find would be meaningless. ali ik .WHL 4,59 Eff X' 3 GG J TWV rf - - 'V f-w rmf z X FN - Aim, ?i'X f??.1 fY!f ' H fy fs fx: WZ f , v ,W X ,,,, , Km: , ., mu,- 16 Ag- ,' -F4 if 'X x 2, Q 'Nt 354 if-31? fb THE CLASS OF 1969 The senior, standing upon the thres- hold of life, dreams of great deeds and high positions. Through the years there has developed in the senior his own unique concept of success, but whatever this concept may be, he may yet have to learn that success will not just come to him, that it does not occupy some pre- determined lofty space in his life. Perhaps an idealist in his impatience to strive toward and reach new and better goals, perhaps a dreamer with incredibly great expectations, the senior's rejection of the pettiness of mediocre life remains that of a realist who has come to see the world as it is. He sees selfishness, in- equality, misunderstanding, and corrup- tion, and he wants to abolish them. He cannot do this by standing on the thres- hold, so with the high hopes and energy of youth he steps forth. Working hard to help the citizens of the Somerville area, the council sent Christmas baskets to needy families, sent Christmas cards to American servicemen over- seas, and contributed funds to Somerset Hospital for necessary equipment. On the lighter side, this year's Student Council sponsored several dances, entertained us with the faculty-All-Star basketball game, and created other new ideas such as the Turkey Trot and Clash Day to maintain school spirit. To publish a medalist winner like the Valkyrie Newy takes stamina, genius, and supervision. While the literary staff strives to meet its dead- lines, the editorial staff spends long hours on make-up night facing hostile printers, illegible copy and typographical errors. Yet, despite the confusion, missing photos, constant work, and misplaced articles, the Valkyrie Newr manages to bring school and local news to the student body with each of the ten issues. The Valkyrie Business Staff, beginning the year in debt, used tremendous ingenuity to raise money and promote the sale of the paper. Their advertisement campaign got off to a great start when the paper dolls, several girls attired in paper garments, leaped through the gymnasium during a pep rally, throwing paper flowers to the assembly with attached notes saying: Buy the Valkyrie! FUT RE TEACHERS An apple a day is not the only reward for members of the Fu- ture Teachers of America. Counseled by Miss Ethel Lux, these ardent would-be teachers attended conventions, heard guest speakers, guided night school students, and hosted the National Honor Society recep- tion. They observed experi- enced teachers in the class- room, discussed college plans, and found for themselves an overall view of the teaching profession, FUTURE NURSES The Future Nurses Club is an organization of girls who plan to help eliminate the nurs- ing shortage. Other than at- tempting to promote careers in health, they try to establish a general concern for community health. Hence, this year the girls organized a school wide fund drive for the Heart Fund, the March of Dimes, and Tu- berculosis. On the social side, the club went on a trip to Valley Forge. It can be said that the community can profit widely from the fine work of these girls. BIOLOGY CLUB Pathologists and lab tech- nicians kept the members of the Biology Club informed with up-to-date hospital methods and research techniques. Led by tri-captains Pat Aiello, George Davidson, and George Sherman, the Somerville Eleven opened with a 3-0 win over MSC foe, South Plainfield. With this providing the mo- mentum and a tough defense anchored by Ed Fair providing the consistency, the SHS squad captured its first Mid- State Conference Championship. Im- portant one-point victories over North Plainfield and Bridgewater West showed the talent of Jerry Jaremenkds toe and the never-say-die attitude of true cham- pions. While losing many good seniors, a bright spot in the future was that this year's JV squad went undefeated, SENIORS Front row, left to right: George Sherman, George Davidson, James Gianchiglia, Patrick Aiello, Robert Perhach, Dennis Eriksen, Michael Niemic.
