Time is an important factor in education. A person's accomplishment is reckoned in periods varying from one year to a lifetime. The intermediary years of a student's education are divided into four year segments. His progress is evaluated at the end of each four years, and he either goes forward or drops by the wayside. Once he goes beyond these formal levels, education becomes a lifelong proiect. The student, now man, advances on his own. He is rated in terms of what he does. There are no set periods for ending a phase of his development. The time allowance is what he makes it. Theoretically then a man can grad- uate at any time, he can have many graduations. This time we speak of is a paradoxical element. To the student it is a turtle roused from his winter hibernation moving stupor-like to a new burrow. To the teacher it is a gazelle alarmed by the presence of a beast of prey dash- ing to safety. To the administrator it must be part turtle and part gazelle, for he reckons his time not in terms of matur- ing youth or developing minds but in the mundane matters of ordering supplies, signing diplomas, or building schools. As the student must be graded, so must the admin- istrator. However, as there are no stipulated periods the time for evaluation must be arbitrary. Because students operate on the four year plan, why not the administrator? Besides the Class of 'I956 feels akin to a particular adminis- trator, for they began their S.H.S. careers with this man. This man has proved himself lust as the graduating mem- bers of the Class have proved themselves. The parallel careers make for a natural period of recognition. Dr. John B. Geissinger, the Class of 1956 salutes your accomplishments in the past four years. We hope you will consider yourself a part of our graduation. Your grades merit the diploma of Administrator Extraordinary your report card follows: COURSE Building 'l8 Room School ..................... . I Construction of Brook's Field Bleachers ....... . Certainly this party brought out the hidden qualities in several usually quite quiet young genltemen. Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White , as played by Bob Graiff, Joe Maxey, Jim Biddlecome, and Dave Wissert, resounded throughout the lower halls. He who laughs best, laughs last and so some seniors learned after racing to get in line for chow only to discover that in the end, they were at the end. Must have been a good one. ,., ' A 'i!'.z. The I956 Pioneer Most of us thought the day would never come, but here it is. With sighs of relief and regret we view the product of all our work and worry. The staff of the Pioneer has tried to make this yearbook a living memory for the Class of 1956. It has been an all year iob with lots of work and lots of fun. The pictures, the copy, the layout and the composition, all had to be combined by the staff to make this yearbook possible. lt is with a great deal of pleasure that we see the results of our labors and present this book to the Senior Class. FootbaH Characterizing Somerville teams of the past three seasons, the 1955-1956 Pioneers thoroughly throunced Bound Brook in the traditional Thanksgiving classic. This victory, coupled with a triumph over North Plainfield, placed Somer- ville second in the county race. Other victories included wins over Morristown and Princeton. Despite iniuries and lack of experience the team, showing great courage and determina- tion, gave a good account of itself in each encounter. Truly fine coaching on the parts of head coach Albert Malekoff, Errico Pacilio, and Mike Burcin deserves the credit for the team's success this year. The starting backfield was composed of Charlie Higgins, Glenn Maddalon, Richard Deto, and Danny Soriano. The forward wall consisted of Bob Lysy, Don Commandini, Larry DeBaro, Eric Sailor, John Cirello, and Herman Sickler. The ends were Jake Quick, Neil Fitzpatrick, Ed Blaufuss, and Andy Stala. Promising sophomores Tom Carroll, Jim Oller, and Emil Fieldler aided in bolstering the attack. For their fine offensive and defensive play throughout the grid campaign Charlie Higgins and Bob Lysy both re- ceived All-County recognition. Again may we offer our congratulations to the boys and their coaches and say, well done, for a fine season in the true Somerville fashion. 34 2 The Varsity He's af the 70, the 20, fhe 30 .... Gaining in experience as the season progressed, the Pioneer men placed third in the District ll Team Championship, just nine points behind first place Washington High. Charles Becker, team captain and Martin Halpern placed first at the championships in their prospective weight classes, Joe Maxey, 168 pound class, and George Painter, 157 pound class, placed second. Graduating Warren Allie, Jim Emmanuel, Roger Grimm, Martin Halpern, Joe Maxey, and Charles Becker mean the team will have to look to under- classmen Bob Allie, George Painter, Bill Dudeck, Cyril Gillette, Tom Stanton, Andrew Serafino, and Joe Amoroso to continue the team next year. With letter winners Marek, Verba, Quick, Loss, and Fitzpatrick returning to the squad, Coach Malekoff had the backbone of a strong team. Tough breaks and close decisions have made the record look bad, but the team has come through in the pinch and is undefeated in county competition. Baseball Schedule April 3 Woodbridge .. At the beginning of the year, the constitution was revised to provide a more suitable point system and election of officers. For the first time this year, the association gave an informal dance, which was held on April I4 in the gym. The theme of the annual A.A. Show presented to the public on April 27 was Wishes . The various scenes from the show portrayed the wishes of a typical teen-age girl from her youthrto her maturity. Another important phase of the program was the intramural sports activities. Volleyball, hockey, basketball, bowling, and baseball comprised the sports agenda. To conclude the activities the Athletic Association held its annual sports award banquet at Martinsville Inn.
