The Class of '56 led by the following officers: President, Neil Fitzpatrickg Vice-President, jacob Quickg Secretary, Anne Montagnag Treasurer, Judy Kahng and Social Repre- sentative, Melvyn Hundley, contributed greatly to the social scene at S. H. S. They sponsored the Hallowe'en Dance called The Haunted Hop, which proved very successful. Later, in May, they joined with the Seniors to stage the school's great event, the Junior-Senior Prom. The junior Class also provided the school with many academic leaders, a championship debating team and many outstanding athletes. A stirring candlelight induction ceremony was held twice during the year, the first at which only seniors were admitted, and the second at which juniors, as well as seniors, became members. During the past year members of the Honor Society assisted the faculty and the administration at the College Tea at which various alumni were present to renew old acquaintances and to share new experiences. The Latin Club, under its advisor, Miss Ethel Lux, informs the members of the language through songs, games and a Latin newspaper, The Me1'mr'y, published by the students and written both in English and Latin. Fina ly, when the great day arrived, everyone was sure to be in school. The backdrop was beautiful, but no one seemed to notice it for each was pulled into a spell, a wonderful trance of dancing notes. The play told of the ruthless murder of a supposedly paralytic old spinster. The spine-tingling murder scene really electrified the audience. Drama Club. the play in her realistic characterization of the acid-tongued old woman. jerry Crum was cast in the role of the neurotic killerg Pat Mecco as the niece and Barbara Aliberto as Dora, the maid, provide the romantic interest to add a touch of humor. Clarence Illario triumphed in his portrayal of Hubert Laurie, the slightly pompous young man-about-town along with Carolyn Schiavi playing the part of a coclcney house- keeper. K IlASIlHIlAll The Pioneers improved on their poor record of last season as a quick glance at the scores will show. Besides beating such teams at North Plainheld and Springfield Regional, Somerville lost one to mighty Dunellen by a slim two-point margin and dropped a heart-breaking 68-67 decision to North Plainfield in a play-off for the county championship, Somerville also defeated Bernardsville twice, Bound Brook twice, and Washington for their total of seven victories. This years team loses only two seniors through graduationgtheir high-scorer, Bob Parker and their fine, hardworking center, Ron Schickora. With such players as Neil Fitzpatrick, Bob Grayer, jake Quick, George Sipel, Mel Hundley, Ralph Riccioni, Fred plus a fine Jay-Vee team under the apt coaching Schenck, Charlie Higgins, and Ed Miller returning, of Mike Burcin, the prospects are encouraging for Coach Bob Allen next year. S. students anticipated hearing at all the baseball games, for as soon as the warm weather made its debut, not far behind was the baseball team under the able direction of Mr. Malekoff. The nucleus of the squad, composed of the returning letter men, were Claude Crater, Neil Fitzpatrick, George Esposito, and Vincent Kostreba. The outheld was wide open this year to new contenders, who proved that they could handle their positions like professionals. The job of pitching was handled mainly by Vince Kostreba, along with Charlie Higgins, Bob Parker, and Richard Deto. Coach Bob Allen had a busy season with the j.V. squad. Many of the boys had gained valuable experience in the Pony Leagues, and were able to give a fine account of themselves. There is no doubt that these boys, who will make up the future varsity squad in years to come, will be able to defend the Somerville crown as well as their predecessors. Rigbl douvz Ike lille, n0w! N ' Q E we grv' M TRACK f To some people spring might mean vacation- time, or the signal to get their swimming trunks out, but to enthusiastic sports fans, spring means it's time for track! On home games, Brooks Field is the destination of many S. H. S. students. Before each game gets underway, many of the track men can be seen doing their last minute workoutsg Bill DiPaolo can be seen trying to perfect the 100-yard dash, while Bob Hermann is concentrating his thoughts on the weights. Leaping high over the hurdles is Stan Wisniewski, and Tom Maclnery is busy hoisting a javelin into the air. The track team got off to a fine start, giving thrills and unlimited excitement to the crowds. Many of the Pioneer fans held their breath when Somer- ville met Bound Brook, but came out with a sigh of relief when S. H. S. won by one point! However, the score wasn't quite so close when Somerville triumphed over St. Peter's. Gm Rufledge working up lo 15 feel. C ompfefe frame lefwz. ppp bf' SHS e Su 55593 r fi 'f:!l'-li'2'iiis WS' 8 Q .
