i The traditional Thanksgiving game with Bound Brook brought to a close the first undefeated, untied season in the history of Somerville High School. The eight succes- sive victories gave Somerville a claim not only to the County Championship for the season but also to the Central jersey Group III Championship, which they were defen - ing. The 1953 Pioneers shared the Central jersey Group III Championship with South River. Many of the boys were given county honors. Frank Cicero, Sam Crosby, Bob Lusardi, Dick Kolans, Al Gara, and Ronald Shickora were among the boys who received recognition on All-County team. Football always produces its many heroes, Sam Crosby, quarterback, leading scorer, Frank Cicero, oldtimers, Bob Lusardi and Dick Kolans. But the success of these out- standing players depends on the other team members who aren't in the limelight. They work just as hard for the team's victories. Al Gara, Monte Gibson, Bob Hermann, jim Rick, Tom Mclnerney, Pete Vitelli, Clem Valko, and Henry Menapace all did their share as linesmen. With Bob Santora snapping the ball, the team was always sure that the play would start right. Ends were 'George Esposito, Charles Higgins, Harry Smith, john Chiselko, and Charles Halsted. Bob Ujabagy's skillful kicking racked up many of the conversions. Ronny Shickora played good defensive and offensive ball. Other backs who helped the team to victory were Stanley Wisniewski, Tony Capici, and Richard Spinelli. It was because of the boys' splendid teamwork that Somerville finished the season on top. The team made a total of 178 points while 51 points were scored against them. Hats off to the 1955 Pioneer football team and to Head Coach, Ernest Gardner, Back- field Coach, Albert Malekoff, and Line Coach, Errico Pacilio, for a magnificent season that will long be remembered!
