' ' ig J ,XS W To Begin With . . ENERGETIC, MULTICOLORED AUTUMN! TREES GONE GOLD This is the season of transition from summer's vacation to winter's work, when nature shifts from August greenery to somber austerity of january. It is that breathless in-between season, a vital time of plunging into a brisk new school year. Harvest time! The school is a granary of knowledge, and each student brain a miniature cerebral bin to be filled kernel by kernel, like the slow piling of newly shucked corn in the crib. A crop of freshmen come skittering through corridors and classrooms like fallen leaves blown thither and hither by unspecific winds. Time for football! Our seasoned varsity team of pumpkin-hel- meted players, Haunting autumrfs orange, charges on to golden victories. Now begin the club, class, and social activities, with programs spanning the full school year. It is the season for storing up substantial things which give way in spring to the more superfluous. What thought have we for passing time? Except that there will be ENOUGH. V I LN The Contents AUTUMN . WINTER . . 32 SPRING . . 58 lf 4, o ' s Y K K? lf' .WY ', K. Jacobsen. In his role of principal, he advised us both individually and as a class, instilling Q S X L in us a sense of responsibility and service. As students we owe him a debt of gratitude for his inspiration throughout our four years in high school. As graduates, each one of us will remember the example of leadership and devotion to duty Mr. Jacobsen has set for us. It X 2 XT Q 'ff if 4533 ' ' 'Wi ar 42 5 3 ff? Nxhk. Y i The traditional Thanksgiving game with Bound Brook brought to a close the first undefeated, untied season in the history of Somerville High School. The eight succes- sive victories gave Somerville a claim not only to the County Championship for the season but also to the Central jersey Group III Championship, which they were defen - ing. The 1953 Pioneers shared the Central jersey Group III Championship with South River. Many of the boys were given county honors. Frank Cicero, Sam Crosby, Bob Lusardi, Dick Kolans, Al Gara, and Ronald Shickora were among the boys who received recognition on All-County team. Football always produces its many heroes, Sam Crosby, quarterback, leading scorer, Frank Cicero, oldtimers, Bob Lusardi and Dick Kolans. But the success of these out- standing players depends on the other team members who aren't in the limelight. They work just as hard for the team's victories. Al Gara, Monte Gibson, Bob Hermann, jim Rick, Tom Mclnerney, Pete Vitelli, Clem Valko, and Henry Menapace all did their share as linesmen. With Bob Santora snapping the ball, the team was always sure that the play would start right. Ends were 'George Esposito, Charles Higgins, Harry Smith, john Chiselko, and Charles Halsted. Bob Ujabagy's skillful kicking racked up many of the conversions. Ronny Shickora played good defensive and offensive ball. Other backs who helped the team to victory were Stanley Wisniewski, Tony Capici, and Richard Spinelli. It was because of the boys' splendid teamwork that Somerville finished the season on top. The team made a total of 178 points while 51 points were scored against them. Hats off to the 1955 Pioneer football team and to Head Coach, Ernest Gardner, Back- field Coach, Albert Malekoff, and Line Coach, Errico Pacilio, for a magnificent season that will long be remembered! E Today's j.V.'s--l omorrow's Varsity! The j.V.'s, though not publicized as much as the Varsity, play important part in the football program. Ik is in j.V. Football, that the boys learn th basic principles of the game and first put them into Ei-actice. Next year's varsity squa iwill Pro ably include those who have distinguished themselves in j.V, footballg en Cornell, Glens Mad. clalon, Gus Rutled e, jo Pinarchik, William DiPaolo,'and Neil. itzpatgrickg Va g At the end of the season, the j.V.'s had defeated St. Peter's,iNorth Plainfield, and Regionalg tied Bound Brook and Bernards- villeg and had lost to Millburn, Plainfield, and New Brunswickg a record not compar- able to that of the Varsity squad but never- theless encouraging. Letfs hopes that the 1955 j.V. team with a seasorfs experience and coaching to back them up will have a successful 1954 season, ' A . 7 x Q? Members of this organization are taught to formulate opinions, support their arguements, and influence audiences in their favor. Debating provides excellent experience in research and public speaking. In addition to inter-class debates, Forum members partici- pated in numerous tournaments, appeared on TV Panels, took part in the state-wide public speaking contest, and pre- sented programs for school and civic audiences. The teams are coached by Charles L. Doyle, who has received acclaim throughout New jersey for the excellence of the Somerville Tourney which othcially opened the Forensic League Season. HONOR SOCIETY One of the most outstanding organizations in Somerville High School is the Honor Society. Membership in this organization is the highest honor a student can receive. Students are admitted on the basis of excellence in scholastic Helds, service to the school, leadership, and character. Twice during the school year, an impressive candle light induction ceremony is held. At the first, only seniors are admitted, and at the second, juniors, as well as a number of seniors, become members. Miss Ethel Lux serves as adviser to this branch of the National Honor Society. PUBLICITY Instrumental in keeping the townspeople well-informed about school happenings, the Publicity group supplied four local papers with school news once a week. The reporters, aided by Miss Feeley and Mr. Kunzman, have made this newly-formed organization one which has served both school and town well. 0lfUflCL efiriiond were due QUILI. CLASS 0F 1955 The juniors this year proved themselves more than worthy of the privileges and responsibilities of upper classmen. Among their memorable contributions as a group to S.H.S. were The Autumn Carnival and The junior-Senior Prom. Mr. Haldeman, class dean, and the class officers worked together to plan the Autumn Carnival, continuing the theme of the Winter Carnival they had given the year before. Later in the year, the juniors, co-sponsors of the prom, worked hard to make the most anticipated event of the year the huge success that it was. The junior class has contributed to the school notx only as a group, but also as individuals. Many outstanding athletes who made our football and wrestling teams so successful were members of the class of '55. In every organization were representatives of the junior class. We, the Class of '54, cannot regret leaving the privileges and duties of seniors to so capable a class, the class of '55. Leading the class of '55 through a successful year were Ray Porcaro, President, Sam Crosby, Vice-President, Angie Cardillo, Secretary, George Esposito, Treasurerg and Bob Herman, Social Representative. While they were still eighth graders, the group was given a first-hand glimpse of Somerville High School at the initial Orientation Day, now sponsored annually by the Guidance Department. At the beginning of the year, they were guests of the Student Council at a closed party-dance, complete with dancing, refreshments, a magician, and other entertainment. Following tradition, the class presented the annual Frosh Talent Show for the entire student body this spring. In january, the class elected a capable slate of ofhcers to guide its activities: President, William Tullyg Vice-President, Sarah Bonhamg Secretary, Gertrude Sukg Treasurer, Virginia Creelyg Social Repre- sentative, Anne Driscoll. The play, a melodrama in three acts, with its cast of capable young dramatists, was directed by Mr. Ronald Kunzman. Barbara Bonham, Mr. right-hand man, was assistant director. The smooth performance seen on play night was the result of weeks of long rehearsals and the efforts of those invalu- able, yet unsung, backstage workers. Louise Blumberg and Betsy Heath were on hand to prompt while Irene Paranay served as a stage manager. The make-up committee worked long and hard to achieve profes- sional-looking make-up on the performers. Yet all the hard work was rewarded after the performance as the audience applauded its approval for a fine play well done. ..6U'l AQLUCL 1 W 'ff-M ,M,,.,.,,,,,, W., ,L , H NVQ? X . Bleak and seemingly endless! The season closes in around us after the fast-paced, glittering Christmas holiday. The interminable stretches of january and February, mitigated Only by brief spurts of new-fallen snow and ire spangles in wintry suns, have come. Now we fate snow drifts of lessons, facts piled on facts, to be ploughed through before spring. lt is the long, leveling season, not unlike the sophomore and junior years when students must grind steadily toward seniorhood. We seem destined forever to follow Chilly tunnels through never- ending work. Now and then we turn into a snow eddy of social activity, but even then the girls in flaky, formal gowns remind us that it is still winter. Our sports, too, reflect the season. There is wrestling-a rugged, wearing, enduring struggle. Basketball follows-a tense, swirling flurry. In this meet, championships among seven schools participating were decided. George Esposito, 123 pound class, and Sam Crosby, 157 poun class, came in first while Bob Sferra, Paul Bell, Eddie Marshall, and Richard Kolans placed second in their respective weight groups. The team as a whole also placed second. The only team member to go through the season undefeated was Sam Crosby, who captured the State Championship crown in the 157 pound class. The play, Papa is All, was chosen as the vehicle for the time talents of the stu ent actors. Mr. Kungman directed and produced the masterpiece acclaimed by many as the most professional stage presentation in the history of Somerville theatres, Particular recognition should be given to Mary Fenuck who played a fine part as Mamag Mary Ann Gerardo, as Mrs. Yoderg Mary Ann johanson, as Emmag Emery Haas, as the very funny son jakeg Mike Halpern, as a tremendously cruel Papag'l jan Beekman, as an understanding and competent Pennsylvania State policeman. The stage setting was accomplished by the att classes under the direction of Mr. Regan. Costumes were by Pat Karabella with the help and advice of Mrs. Hartman. 1 2 at va ,asf if . ,gl . Sports go out of doors again. Baseball and track-long flights of ball and boy. For us, the Seniors, Spring bears a special mark. It is the begin- ning, tinged faintly with the regret of parting, but silver-edged with the anticipation of what is to come. Spring! Terminal of activities! End of the school year! Once again the beginning of Spring saw boys of all four classes turn out for their physicals and the Hrst day of practice of the baseball season. With the first game early in April, Coach Al Malel-:off was busy getting the team lined up and in shape. Positions seemed rather sure in some places however. Around the bases and shortstop are Clem Valko, joe Sferra, Bob Lusardi, and George Esposito. In the field, Frank Cicero, Dick Kolans, Harold Van Horn, Pete Vitelli, and Vinnie Kostreba are contending for the three positions. Returning to the mound again are Martin Baloga and Charles Halsted. Charles Higgins is also a pitcher for the squad. Claude Carter is behind the plate doing the catching. Coach Bob Allen also has to choose a junior Varsity squad from boys with a wide range in experience. It is the hitting power of the team that makes the runs and determines the Victory. It looks as if both the Varsity and jay Vee squads will enjoy a successful season and possibly get the County Championship. DIAMGND 9 FACES TCUGH SCHEDULE owning up f ,, ,, f s . ? m riff, 1 mf emi-OO As the first few days of Spring rolled around, the track- men of S. H. S. started their annual practice for this year's tompetition. Although the ranks were thinned somewhat by last year's graduation, Coach Haldeman and Assistant Coach Gardner had forty boys with which to make a team. In spite of the work of seniors on the team there are many experi- enced juniors and underclassmen returning again this year. For the running events, the coaches are depending on Charles Bothers and Bob Kreider for the mileg Dave Gon- zales, Glen Maddalon, and Tony Capici for the half-mileg Q Stan Wisniewski, Bob Grayer and Mel Hundley-quarten milers. Also Sam Crosby, Bill DiPaolo, Frank Morrison, Stan Wisniewski, and Wilson Baker for the 100-yard dash and hurdles. Weight men are jim Rick, Henry and Lou Menapaee, Tom Mclnerny, and Milt lfinklestein. Rounding out the team are Walt Kalmback and Gus Reitledge-pole vaulters. If the success of the team can be foretold by their victory at the first meet, S. In the fall the Girls' Athletic Association officers were elected: President, Miriam Boomhowerg Vice-President, Bar- bara Bonhamg Secretary, Alice Strampg and Treasurer, Betsy Heath. These offices were open only to girls who had earned a required number of pointsg but all members were eligible to vote. Every girl wishing to participate in after-school activities must hold a membership card. Archery, hockey, soccer, and tennis highlighted the autumn season's outdoor sports. Recreational sports-badminton, ping-pong, and volleyball--were held indoors on Tuesdays. Because boys' sports have the gym during December and january, the only early winter sports going on were Night League volleyball, basketball, and bowling. However, a group of junior and senior girls participated in a basketball playday at North Plainheld High School. Between spring rains, the girls moved outdoors to compete with the boys for playing space on the softball diamond. This season, too, was climaxed by a playday-Somerville, the host. Girls from each gym class were elected to be members of Leaders' Club, which meets Monday afternoons. In class the leaders were marked daily by the teachers. Every two weeks the girls with the highest marks receive a stripe. After four stripes are received, a star is awarded. At the end of the year awards were given to the most outstanding leader. Officers of the Leaders' Club are President, Irene Paranay, Vice-President, Alice Strampg Secretary, Pat Meccog and Treasurer, Ann Montagna. U? .J 5 . 1 ' r t . We have had a taste of each of these and now go forth to use the knowledge which we have contributed. As freshmen we showed great promise socially as well as in the fields of athletics, scholarship, music, drama, art, and journalism. We have more than lived up to the example put forth by the pre- ceding graduating classes. We feel that we contributed to outstanding achievements. We hold the distinction of having the first undefeated, untied football in the schools long grid history. This team also tied for the Central New jersey Championship and gained the first un- disputed Somerset County Conference Champion- ship in many years. This year's wrestling team was, also, one of the best in the history of Somerville High School. Along with the not easily forgotten memories of 1953-1954 are the half year and final exams, the Senior Play, A Girl in the Rainy the Valentine Dance, the two informal dancesg the wonderful junior-Senior Promg and the Senior Party. Some of us are now leaving high school with a feeling of relief, however, the majority of us realize that we will never be able to live these days over again, It is this majority that is leaving with a feeling of genuine regret, taking with us a picture of the many pleasures afforded to us by Somerville High School. This picture will in all probability grow dim with the passing decades, but it shall never be completely erased from our memories. May I take this opportunity to wish each senior true happiness and success in the future. Sincerely, Robert G. Lusardi 4 I I Q 1 ,, ,f - -' ' Constance Ruth Ahrons 438 Bartine St. Somerville, N.
