Attitudes of the faculty directly influence the en- thusiasm and loyalty with which the students carry on their class work and activities. It is largely because Somerville High School has been endowed with a faculty so gifted that the school rates today as superior among those that have been evaluated by the Commis- sion on Secondary Education. The chief aim of the school, however, is to in- spire us, its students, to open our minds constantly to new subjects and to new ideas, whether we go on to college or accept a job. Good counciling by our teachers, a friendly approach and the ability to help us to find joy in learninggthese things determine whether or not we are to continue our education tomorrow. We have been most fortunate in having on our faculty men and women who have given to us this desire. FACULTY llff ll! ADMINISTRATICN- - We take this opportunity, as the first class to pub- lish a yearbook during his administration, to welcome our new supervising principal, Dr. john B. Geiss- inger. Although he has been with us but one year, we have glimpsed his effective leadership, a leadership which is sure to grow wider in scope and more potent in influence with the tomorrows to come. Capable leaders we already know in the persons of Mr. Randolf T. Jacobsen, principal, and Mr. Lawrence L. Moore, assistant principal, who have served us many years by drawing together the faculty and the student body into one harmonious whole. It is with a sense of gratitude that we thank the Board of Education, civic-minded citizens of the community, who have given selflessly of their time to provide for us today our excellent school facilities. In our tomorrows, may we take from them the in- spiration to do our part in a similar manner. Robert A. Henry, Edward C. Kane, Norman S. Greiner, Homer E. Cook, M.D., Miss Dorothy M. Herder, Allan M. CLASS HISTORY FELLOW CLASSMEN: In a few weeks our four years at Somerville High School shall pass into the realm of memory and nos talgia . . . There have been moments of pleasure times of toil, periods of sadness and remorse. We hope that we have taken and benefited from the best that our school has offered, and in return we sincere ly hope that our record, as a class, shall stand as an inspiring testimony to our accomplishments. What is the record? What are the accomplishments? Let us during these few moments, look back over the years As Freshmen, timid yet eager to belong, we par- ticipated whole-heartedly in all school activities. Each following his own taste and ability. The more ath- letically inclined engaging in football, basketball, baseball, track, and wrestling. Those seeking musical expression joined the various vocal groups, dance band, orchestra, and band. Still others participated in the activities of the various clubs and special organi- zations of the school We were active We sought service and cooperation and the feeling of security that comes through belonging and participation in our social world We feel that we were progressive as a class-our contributions are many We gained the Central New jersey Football championship for the first time in a great many years We also resented the school with the Somerset County Basket all League championship for the first time in that league s history Our fellow classmen have represented us in All State Band and All-State Chorus. Progress? - Certainly! Now we are graduating Seniors - our time has come to pass on our heritage to those who follow. We trust we have served well. We hope that the records we have established shall long be remembered. More- over, we wish each of the Seniors their full measure of success in any and all endeavors of the future. The team did not compile a very impressive record but the boys did gain valuable experience for the future. In basketball it was altogether a different story, the Freshmen won eight of the twelve games played, which made them the best Frosh team in Somerset County. The class is also well represented in the other activ- ities of the school. We are proud to have two members who made the varsity debating team and three who made the dance band. Many others are active in j.V. Chorus, Male Chorus, band, orchestra, Valkyrie News, and language clubs. X 1 J 'if' Q' if' STUDENT CCUNCIL 9 Richard Kolans, Patricia Henry, Richard Stryker, Leroy Lusardi. The Student Council embodies honor, citizenship, leadership, and authority. The membership of the Student Council is composed of thirteen seniors, nine juniors, nine sophomores, and two freshmen elected by their respective classes. The Student Council acts as a contact between the administration, the faculty, and the student body. Problems.submitted to the Council are thoughtfully considered, and solutions are earnestly sought. On occasion meetings are held with the homeroom captains, faculty members, and the administration. The capable leadership demonstrated by the offi- cers enabled the group to complete many projects. Routine Council work includes the printing of foot- ball and basketball programs and schedule cards for varsity sports. Two professional and two exchange assemblies are sponsored. Council members serve as hosts and ushers when various groups visit the school. Bundle Day is another annual project. This year at the State Student Council Convention, Somerville provided a chairman, a reporter, and two panel speakers. The Student Council appreciates the co-operation it receives from everyone at S.H.S. for without this, the Council work would not be successful. 1 ix , . Somerville had a very active debating squad this year. If you should stop into room 202 any after- noon, you would be very likely to find one or more practice debates going on. Not only is debating good fun, but it also gives theparticipant good experience in doing research, assem- bling data, and presenting his facts in a formal matter. Through debat- ing, one gains confidence in him- self. The year's debating schedule in- cluded three interclass debates to determine the-school champion, The sophomores won. VALKYRIE The chief aims of The Valkyrie News, one of the busiest organi- zations in the school, are to bring the news from every nook and cranny about school to the students, to guide student opinion, and to serve as an historical record for school events. The advisor of the oldest extra- curricular activity is Miss Hannah G. Cranston. Although the students actually only see eleven issues of The Val- kyrie News during the school year Qwhich they probably read in half an hourj, weeks and weeks of preparation go into each issue. The news must be collected, written up, typed, proof-read for errors, and then put into the final form. The actual printing of the school paper is done by the Messinger-Gazette. The Valkyrie is a member of the National Scholastic Press Associa- tion, Quill and Scroll, and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This year it received a second year rating in the Columbia contest. T941 0 VIKING The viking is a magazine composed of creative writing of students from the Somerville Public Schools. This group has had an exceptionally good year, and this reputation is truly deserved. Under the untiring efforts and excellent direction of Claude Shappelle, these musicians have reap- ed the rich reward which comes to those who spend numerous hours in rehearsals after school. The band is an added attraction at all football games. The members not only put on a performance during the half, but give moral support to the players with their attendance and music. This group is not only an asset to the school, but to the town of Somer- ville. They play and parade at any season of the year, whenever various parades and celebrations are held in town. One World, Come to the Fair, and Deep River, have added to the rich memories of singing in Gif s' Glee. Although rehearsals are held during noon hour, the Chantelles don't mind missing part of their lunch hour to do what they enjoy doing most. The close harmonies of Talk of the Town, I'll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time, and All the Things You Are were the outstanding musical triumphs. The girls stepped lively this year through many command performances. The members are Betty Creely, Annette Curcio, Pat Henry, Pat Severin, Shirley Filigheri, Barbara Dafter, Lee Soriano, and Marianne Hageman. fioij 'vig-'89 'f - '-1-A466 'Gr hw if 1 5 ,, is J gf Wjffzfffg W if H 18 gf ,gl .mn W we Q , M--Q, fr A. A. PLAY Melody jmzer. a comedy drama by Ruth and Nathan Hale, was the annual presentation of the Athletic Association in 1953. The production utilized the talents of students from all classes. Some of these young dramatists were introduced to the god Thespis for the first time, while others were bidding him farewell. Mary Ann johan- son, Pat Mecco, and Sandra Danzig appeared for the first time in a major production. Gus Kane, joan Cremer, Diane Van Nest, Morton Scharman. and Everett Drake completed their acting careers as students at S.H.S. Arlene Lebom, a junior, appeared in her second major production. The A.A. Play was organized in 1926 when a variety show entitled A.A. Follies was presented. Nineteen hundred twenty-seven saw two one-act plays taking the place of the variety show. Following this the switch was made to the three-act play and this has been the tradition since 1928. The Somerville gridiron machine swept through the first eight games of the schedule only to suffer a most unexpected defeat at the hands of Bound Brook in the annual Thanks! giving spectacle. The Pioneers were awarded the group III Central jersey State Championship, which was some consola- tion tor the defeat by our arch rivals from Bound Brook. After twenty-four years of strivingg heart-rending close ones, back breaking practicesg and utter disappointment, Dame fortune has, at long last, showered her blessings on Somerville High School in the form of its first County Basketball Championship. Wrested from the grasp of a worthy adversary in the dying moments of a play-off game, this trophy, emblem of a cherished victory, takes its place among other honors of today and yesteryear. This is the first time in the history of the Somerset County Basketball League, that Somerville has won the title. They won't forget it. They won it through faith, faith in their coach, Bob Allen, and faith in themselves and their ability. The title is a fine tribute to a group of men who molded themselves into a Hghting, cohesive unit that never died in the stretch. lst rovs left to ri ht bottom jim Sermons Prank Cicero joseph Panzerella LeRoy Lusardi Everett Drake Znd row top Robert Esposito Getrge Esposito joseph Mehalick Hubert Breitenbergei joseph Sferra Coach Robert Allen Roselle 62 Dunellen 46 South River 89 Dunellen 55 Roselle 44 North Plainfield 52 Springfield Regional 51 Bernardsville 49 Highland Park 69 Bound Brook 55 The beginning of the season found Coach Allen with the difficult task of rebuilding his club with only two lettermen returning from last years quintet. As the season progressed, his problems were lessened somewhat by the development and steady play of Frank Cicero, Everett Drake, jim Sermons, john Chiselko, joe Mahalick, and the twins, George and Bob Esposito. The scene on the horizon looks a little brighter for the Pioneers next year. A fine jay-vee team established a brilliant record under the tutelage of Coach Ernie Gardner. This jay-vee young blood moving up into the varsity ranks, should provide the Pioneers with a greatly strengthened combination for next year's foray in league competition. Taking into consideration the fact that this years team is composed largely of veteran lettermen, the Championship appears as more of a certaintly than a wild dream. Coach Malekoff will have a pitching staff of great experience and ability with such talent as Mickey Kostreba, Charlie Halstead, and jerry Gote returning to the mound. An infield composed of jimmy Sermons at first baseg Leroy Lusardi at secondg joe Sena, shortstopg Bob Lusardi at thirdg and Frank Cicero behind the plate should provide the Pioneers with the defensive strength necessary to turn back any uprising. Sanders. WRESTLING The wrestling team had one of the best dual meet records in the history of the sport at Somerville. We lost only two meets, one to Union and the other to Bound Brook. For the first time in many years we defeated Washington. Sam Crosby and joe Shine were undefeated in dual meet competition. Though the season record was good, however, we did not fare so well in tournament competition. Sam Crosby was the only one to win the District Cham- pionship. Sam went on to win third place in a very tough State Tournament. Coach Fred Christ has a good nucleus returning to the mats for SHS next year. The only graduating lettermen are Bob Sanders, joe Shine, and joe Hazy. Bob Sanders and joe Shine were co-captains of the squad this year. For next year we lool-4 forward to another successful season. TRACK Track and Field men launched their first year of competi- tion under coach Haldeman, assisted by Mr. Gardner. Last years squad was thinned by graduation, so a new building program ensued. Physical exams were held Thursday, lfebruary 19, with a turnout of over hfty candidates, Many of the Freshman and Sophomores look promising. C0-captains will be selected by all members of the squad when the season gets underway April 7. Last year's hold-overs who will be aiming for greater records this year are Everett Drake, and Buddy Carroll in the weight division. In the running events Dick Libby, Dave Mc- Connell, Pat Esposito, Ray Woodland, and Robert Chiselko will also be aiming for new records. It is the teams purpose to create the squad into a county and state power. All the boys pulling together will accomplish this. t NHYQMACB LF -J-L4 Y wh +57 1 ,Tv ...r a ,H-21 f'i ii .S mf xii 'X 6? 5,-5. : ,,,.... '12 -, ,,. Q 1' ylar ... . ,. M ., G L -5.-':. ' ' . .
