' Www Membership in the National Honor Society sym- bolizes high ideals, good character traits, and a high degree of scholarship and leadership. Each year, as the members renew once more the pledge of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Serv- ice, the spectator senses the great sincerity of purpose on the part of the student to become an asset to his school and a leader in his community. An organization such as the National Honor Society is definitely needed to raise our American educational system to its highest standards, and to imprint in the students' minds the true purpose of education. The members pose in front of the National Honor Society emblem, the flaming torch. Diane Vachon, Secretary, Sandra Spellman, Presi- dent, Raymond Lassonde, Vice-President, Wayne Chick, Treas- urer. 80 As the world becomes smaller and smaller, a knowledge of foreign languages becomes more im- portant, and capable language students are in great demand. Also, the study of another tongue can be a fascinating and rewarding experience. Realizing this, the French Club, En Avant, strives to improve the students' speaking ability, and to kindle an interest in French history and culture through the many activities, movies, lectures, and the annual trip to a French center in Boston. An added attraction is the hilarious initiation of new members. Under the direction of Mrs. Jessie O'Malley and Edmond Valade, the organization has maintained its high standards, and the programs have proved to be enjoyable to its members. D . Vigilando, agundo, bene consulundo, prospera omnia ceduntf' This ancient motto of Sallust seems a most appropriate standard for the Latin Club. Vigi- lance, action, wise counsel-these insure success. Cer- tainly this newly formed but active organization abounds in all three. Students must work diligently to attain the ninety per cent average required for membership, but the study of che customs, manners, and history of the Romans make the course in Latin rewarding and enjoyable. David Vallee served as captain and Roderick Ferland and Alan Adams as managers of the team, which ended the season with a 5-5 record, good enough for second place in the Division III standings. At the start of the 1959 season, four regulars, re- ported for football-Captain David Vallee, Ronald Canney, David Fields, and Norman Dumont. They led a green and inexperienced squad of 40 eager can- didates to a successful season. The traditional All-State eleven, chosen at the close of each season by the New Hampshire Football Coaches, was predominantly Somersworth. Captain David Vallee and David Fields were first team choices. Norman Dumont, Dennis Pouliot, and Denis Moore were second team choices, Ronald Canney and David Veno were on the third team, while honorable mention went to Reynald Bald, Gerard Blanchette, and Demo Eleftherion. This was David Vallee's second year on the dream team, as a guard a year ago and as quarter- back this year. Lord jeff Francoeur completed his 31st year as SHS football coach. Fine team play enabled the three regular running backs to share scoring honors-David Veno led with 48 points, followed by Demo Eleftherion with 37 and Ronald Canney with 50. The leading ground gainer was Ronald Canney who gained 581 yards in 91 tries for an average 6.4 yards per carry. This was the first time that Somersworth had bowed to the Blue Knights in over a dozen games. Although the Somersworth offensive line blocked well, the Hilltopper's backfield could not gain ground. Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the Somersworth lads began to show a little more spark, but penalties and a stout defense prevented any scoring. ST. JOHN-8-O The Blue and W,hite defeated the St. john's Fighting Irish for their third victory at Memorial Field. A stout defensive line, consisting of Norman Dumont, David Fields, Dennis Pouliot, Gerard Blan- chette, and Ronald Canney held the Concord lads to one first down and a net of 30 yards rushing and pass- ing. Roland Turcotte, a sophomore line backer, showed his running ability by intercepting a St. John pass on his own 22-yard line and running it back 30 yards to the St. Johns 48 to set up a touchdown. SPAULDING-12-0 The Somersworth High School football team reached its peak on a rainy, muddy day when it de- feated the Spaulding Red Raiders, l2-0, before a wildly cheering partisan crowd at Rochester. A 50-yard pass play thrown by David Daigle was miie first Somersworth play of the ball game and set the tempo of the entire contest. Somersworth's upset victory over Spaulding was undoubtedly the highlight of the 1959 season. Captain St. Laurent drove in four runs on four hits, Captain Thibaulr, Robert Lambert, and David Vallee, all had two hits in the two games. Lack of control and loose fielding lost the St. john's game, 9-3. Somersworth's runs were driven in by Raymond Thibault, who had three hits, and Reynald Bald, a freshman. Denis Moore scored twice with two hits. Seven errors led to a 6-5 defeat by Sanborn. Denis Moore and David Pouliot were on base a total of seven times. David Chick, a freshman, won his first high school game with a well-pitched victory over Oyster River, 7-6. Robert Lambert batted in three runs Reynald Bald, two, with two hits each. Co-captains Thi- bault and St. Laurent each scored twice. Pinkerton bombed the Toppers, 13-4, in a game marred by walks. Roger Langevin drove in three runs with two doubles to give Robert Lambert all the runs he needed to win. An earlier defeat from Sanborn was avenged as Robert Lambert gave up only three ,hits to win, 6-0. Thibault drove in two runs and David Vallee made several excellent fielding plays. Roger Langevin and David Vallee had two hits each and drove in three runs, but this was not enough, as Winnacunnett won, 9-6. Pinkerton scored fourteen runs in the last two innings to win, 17-5.
