The Somersworth High School Hilltoppers surprised their most ardent supporters by com- pleting a very successful season in which five victories were registered as against only two defeats. Among the victims were Kennett of Conway, Sanborn Seminary, Manchester West, St. John's of Concord, and Pinkerton Aca- demy. Spaulding of Rochester and Exeter, the only two Granite State elevens able to com- pile unbeaten and untied records, were vic- torious over the Somersworth eleven. There were but three veterans of the l956 season among the 56 candidates who ans- wered the coll for practice late in August. Kennett was soundly trounced 27-6 as Cap- tain Smirles scored 3 touchdowns and ran for ll8 yards in the opening game of the season at the Noble Pines. 82 Two generations of Francoeurs Coach Francoeur and Jeffrey A series of unfortunate incidents slowed down the development of the inexperienced squad. Just prior to the first game, a heart breaking 54-56 loss to Berwick Acad- emy, the varsity squad members chose two seniors, Jeffrey Francoeur and Nor- man Ferland, as co-captains. Co-captain Jeffrey Francoeur scored 334 points in eighteen games to break Roger Lapointe's record of 306 points made in l953. He also broke Lapointe's record of an l8-point per game average, made in l954, by averaging l8.6 points per game for eighteen games. The original record of 277 points set by James Fabiano in the l938-39 sea- son has been beaten by exactly four players - Coach Robert Michel, Roger Lapointe, Robert Lapointe, and Jeffrey Francoeur. The scoring of the other six lettermen follows: David Vallee, l56, Paul Hen- nelly, l38, John Xenos, l28, Norman Ferland, l23, Roderick Ferland, 62, and Costa Smirles, 47. In the preliminary round, back to back singles by Donald Veno and Raymond Thi- beault accounted for both of Somersworth's runs. Norman Ferland pitched all the way. He scattered five singles, struck out nine enemy batters and gave up but one base on balls. Behind the one-hit pitching of Donald Veno, Somersworth nosed out Pembroke 2-O in two extra innings to move into the Class M finals. Captain Michaels' clutch double in the ninth inning drove in Paul Hennelly and Edmond Turcotte who had reached on consecutive singles after two were out. These two students were chosen because of their many fine traits of character, and for the true school spirit which they have displayed, not only on the yearbook staff, but in all other school activities as well. Their over- whelming popularity with teachers as well as students accounts for the fact that they have always maintained a high scholastic stand- ing, and that they have at all times been very co-operative and dependable. Fred Legro SENIOR RECESSIONAL School Song Gives Us From This Day Forward, a choralogue, under the direction of Miss Mary E. Riley, was presented as the commencement program of l957, and superseded the tradition- al type of graduation which had been used in the past. The four graduation speakers played the role of the Salutatorian, the Valedictor- ian, the Alumnus, and the Principal, and spoke when called upon by the Voice of Alma Mater which was heard over the loud speaker. They also invested the four highest-rank- ing students in the Class of i958 as the Junior Keepers of the Torch of Knowledge which was burning on the school altar. The setting for this choralogue was a simple one, but a waltz se- lection which recalled to the mem- bers of the class the night of their Junior Prom, added a touch of color. The whole program proved to be very effective even though it was so different from the general pattern of graduation exercises.
