Along with a spirited, hardworking se¬ nior class advisor, the class of ’86 got its first Case Rally victory. The seniors, be¬ hind new advisor Ken Day, finally did it. They won the Case Rally. The artistic talent of Lori Towers, .Lynne Gagnon, Kathy Cwikla, Melissa Gedacht, and Ro¬ sie O’Toole led the senior class to a first place in artwork. Though the skit was not first place, the debut acting of Mark Fur- tado (Coach Winslow), Dave “Budah” Banville, and Steve Chmeileski, clinched enough points to keep the seniors in the running. The skit entitled “Coach Pom Gets Lost” seemed like the same run- into-the-ground plot. But with the veteran acting of Ken Southworth, Adam Stein¬ berg, and John Beaulieu, along with the dancing feet of Dave Domingo, Mike O’Neil and Doug Medeiros (who also had the task of carrying the Mighty Budah), the skit became a funny, easy to follow comedy. The spirit cheer written and di¬ rected by Chris Miozza and Cheryl Mon- geon, clinched the victory for the seniors. Steve Crowley, known as Colby, led this creative cheer and inspired his class to win just enough points to come out on top. As always, the best win. It’s funny how the seniors always seem to win. 53 Sophomores 61 Somerset Junior Miss Senior girls in the Somerset vicinity were invited to participate in the first annual Jr. Miss Pageant. The participants were judged on scholastic achievement, poise and appearance, athletic ability, tal¬ ent, and an interview. Lori Towers won and Kristin Willard, Carla Munroe, Don- nalee Leonardo, from D-R, and Julie Salmon were the runners-up, in that re¬ spective order. After moving down from Division I to Division II, the 1985 cross-country team had a highly successful season. This was Richard Bernardo’s twenty- first season of coaching and was defi¬ nitely one of his most memorable and rewarding seasons. Two senior boys led the team through their up and down season. Jeff Tippins and Kenny David ran to¬ gether in most of the races and always finished near the top of the pack. Their dedication to cross-country for four years and their strong character has been an inspiration to the younger, less experienced runners on the team. On the girls’ side, senior Samantha Searles’ strong desire to do well and her competitive drive gave her the edge she needed in some close races. She profitted enormously from her hard work during practice. The three senior captains, working with Coach Bernardo, developed a strong sense of team unity as the sea¬ son progressed. At the end of the sea¬ son, Mr. Bernardo was confident that next year’s team would be as enjoy¬ able as this year’s cross-country team was. ■ mnl first row (I to r): Karen Kelley, April Blankenship, Nancy Fillion, Donna Gendron, tri-captains: Julie Salmon, Lisa Duarte, Nancy Gray, Kerry St.Pierre, Nancy BUBBA Lebel. second row (I to r): Tara McDonald, Pam Blake, Kathy Mendes, Lisa Geary, Heidy Frizado, Diane Bernardo, third row (I to r): Cheryl Iodice, Melis¬ sa Martin, Kris Cwickla, Tracy Kerrigan, Kyra Maggiacomo, and Coach Sue Curt. Field Hockey The 1985 field hockey season was a successful one. Although, there were eight seniors, the team was a young one. They captured a record of 10-5- 3, which earned them fourth place in one of the toughest, new leagues in the state, and a trip to the state tournament. Captained by Lisa Duarte, Nan¬ cy Gray, and Julie Salmon, the team tied arch rival Case 1-1 and 0-0 and defeated Stang and Dart¬ mouth, both past state champions. High scorers for the Raiders were senior for¬ ward Donna Gendron and sophomore Diane Ber¬ nardo. They were second and fifth, respectively, in the league for goals. Donna Gendron and Tracey Kerrigan both did an excellent job for the team and were named to the league’s all star team. captains: Julie Salmon, Lisa Duarte, and Nancy Gray. 68 € _1t ittr. ■ I Captains: Tim Kuenster, Dave Teixeira, Coach Horton, and Jon Gagne. first row (1 to r): Matt Medeiros, Dave Teixeira (C), Tim Kuenster (C), Jon Gagne (C), Mike Sampietro, Bill Aguiar, second row (1 to r): George Affonso, Kin Wong Mark Medeiros, Henric Bergman, Scott Beaudry, Craig Sousa, Scott Medeiros, t hird row (1 to r): Coach Whitney Horton, Steve Birkett, Andrew Buckley, John Car valho, Keith Arruda, Matt White, Thad Ward, Jamie Lynch. 90 Top Row: Coach Ken Day, Coach John Soares, Dave Haddad, Chris Chasse, Bob DeMoura, Mike Petrillo, Ed Judge, Todd Di Manno, Scott Jasparo Dave agerman, Kevin Souza, Greg Askrin, Bill Alexander, Coach Bob Tavares, Coach Ed Winslow Middle Row: Mike O’Neil, Tim Katon, Rich Goodrow Tom St Lau- rent, Doug Medeiros, Dave Benevides, Matt Leary, Ken Southworth, Steve Chmielewski, Paul Rogers, Sean Owens, Todd King, C.J. Without Mr. LaMothe’s time and dedication to the Raider, this year’s book would not be as successful as it is. We would also like to thank Joe Geoffroy our school photographer and Norval Garnett from Jostens. Chris Rosebrock along with the entire Raider staff should also be thanked for a job well done! On behalf of the whole Raider staff we would like to wish all the members of the Class of ’86 the best of luck in their future years. Our four years at Somerset High have flown by. Each of us will walk away with memories that will last a lifetime, though these memories will fade as time goes by. We hope this book will succeed in recreating those memories of Somerset High School. Mr. LaMothe, Advisor 142 On behalf of the graduating class of 1986, I would like to extend congratulations to the facul¬ ty and administration for making it through four years with our “ever-trying to improve” class. I would also like to thank them for their unending efforts dedicated to developing the minds of fu¬ ture America (and teachers, thanks for not going on strike). I would personally and sincerely like to thank our senior class advisor Ken Day. In his rookie season as class advisor, he combined his spirit a nd diligence to make this year a memorable one for our senior class. Thanks again Ken . . uh . . I mean Coach Day. Lastly, I would like to thank you, the class of 1986. I commend you on your choice for class president??!!) and thank you for your coopera¬ tion in any of our class endeavors. Thanks also go out to Steph Mendes (what a great last name). Steph’s great personality and dedication was a help to us all. I also thank secretary Dawn Roderi- ques and treasurer Sue Almeida for all their help. Let us not forget the other members of my staff, elected and appointed, who worked just as hard as anyone. But most of all, I would like to thank you for being (. . . on the whole . . .) good people and great classmates. Good luck! Brian Mendes, Senior Class President YOUR CLASS PHOTOGRAPHER GliestriufHill Studios, Ltd 28 c Briarwood Tiara Seekonk.Ma. 02771 (617 -336-4777 Professional Photography Best Wishes To The Class Of 1986 143 The years that now we call the past, where precious times, we hoped would last, and though it is time, to start again, we can not forget our special friends. Together we have searched, through good times and bad, as now we recall the memories we have. We have helped each other to grow and change, as we prepare for a life, that is new and strange. High school has ended and is now at a close, but we look towards the future and all that it holds. So the tears that we shed are for the years that we shared, reminding each other, how much we all cared. Although it is time to say our good-byes, we will remember each person, as they passed through our lives. For how it is time, when close friends will part, but the cherished memories, we will keep close to our heart. DR p I
