The senior class, behind David Benoit as Coach Ed Winslow pulled off their second straight Case Rally with a hilarious visit to “The Twi¬ light Zone”, and the stars of 1960’s television shows. The antics of Ke¬ vin Mendes and Curt Smith as Fag- man and Robin, and Cheryl Noble, Craig Phillips, and Abby Morse as Annette Funicello, Beaver, and The Flying Nun proved the supremacy of the class of 1984. Diane Borges and David Gabriel, as Ginger and Mr. Howell, turned in memorable performances, as did Tracey Worton, the voice from Poltergeist. Tony Cabral, leading the crowd with his “applause” signs, was the best indicator of the spirit of the seniors. 54 Juniors History Of The Raiders Sophomores • Saturday Night Live are out MM ■M -sam r o ' . They started the season with a loss to Canton, but showed great improvement in the games that followed with exceptional wins over New Bedford, Falmouth and tradi¬ tional rival, Case. Senior tri-captains Timmy McGrady, Ke¬ vin Mendes, and Sean MacMurray all had an excellent season, and were great team lead¬ ers, while the team as a whole played ex¬ tremely well. The seniors, according to coach Ed Winslow, were leaders on and off the field, and there were few problems with discipline. Three athletes were named to the coaches All-League Division 1 All Stars: Craig Phillips, 2 year starter at quarterback, threw for about 50% and completed passes for over 1400 yards. Kevin Mendes, tri-cap¬ tain; defensive and offensive star. Paul Chodkowski-school record breaker with 38 completed passes. The entire team deserves credit for all their efforts in making the sea¬ son an exciting and enjoyable one. 1983 Football 1st row: Scott Sylvester, Dave Benevides, Jason Rua, Bob Antone, Ronnie Michael, captains: Tim McGrady, Kevin Mendes and Sean McMurray, Fred Makuch, Mike Ryan, Tim Kerrigan, Mark Velozo, Steve Botelho 2nd row: coaches John Soares and Ken Day, Brian Mendes, Andy DiGiammo, Craig Phillips, Bob Gendron, Doug Coray, Bob Stickney, Paul Chodkowski, Mark Leary, Tony Botelho, John O’Neil, Jimmy Rebello, Dave Domingo, Jeff Hadad, John Cabeceiras, coach Jim Mulrooney, Head coach Ed Winslow, coach Bob Tavares 3rd row: Eugene Almedia, Mark Furtado, Chris Quentel, Carl Dimanno, Mike Fiore, Curtis Smith, Jeff Faria, Jim Mello, Mark Labreche, Paul Viera, Gary Rockliff, Scott Plosker, Don Torpey, Billy Simons, Bob Baker, Carl Correia Field Hockey FIELD HOCKEY 1983 The 1983 field hockey season was a successful one. Coach Sue Curt led the team to a 7-2-1 record, a trip to the state tournament and first place in the league. The beginning of the season started badly for the Raiders. Dropping two pre¬ season games to eventual state champi¬ ons Bishop Stang and tying weak West- port did not help the team’s outlook any, nor did injuries to starting sweep Virginia Laureanno and Carolyn Matula. After a disheartening loss to archrival Case, it looked like another battle just to stay out of the cellar. But the 1983 field hockey team did not give up hope. They defeat¬ ed Wareham one sunny September day and never looked back. The rest is histo¬ ry- Under the captainship of Virginia Laur- eano and Tracy Worton, SHS played ex¬ tremely well. Highlights of the season in¬ clude a tense 1-0 victory over powerful D-R, a superb display of defense in a 2-1 win against co-title holder Case, and an emotional final season game with See- konk which the Blue Raiders won 3-0. To opposing teams, Pam Bustin, Jenni¬ fer Crowell and Tracy Worton proved to be offensive threats while inner Donna Gendron led the team in scoring. Center- half Cindy Stafford anchored the solid defensive line of Linda Pomfret, Karen Kelly, Julie Jackson and Maryellen Moniz. Stacey Borges had a fine year in goal, recording 6 shutouts in the quest for Somerset’s first league title since 1976. Named to the SEMC Division II All Star team were links Pam Bustin and Tracy Worton. Halfback Julie Jackson and Worton were selected for the New Bedford Standard Times team; while Worton, Bustin, and junior Cindy Stafford were named to the Herald News’ All-Stars. Coach Susan Curt, after turning around last year’s 4th place team (2-6-2) into league champs, was chosen as coach of the year by the Herald News. A special thanks goes to some die-hard fans; Mrs. Mary Curt, Dave Rockliffe, Rich Chagnon and Tom Correa, and all the other parents who braved the cold days of October to cheer the team on. 1983 Junior Varsity Field Hockey 1st row: Cheryl Iodice, Christine Ready, Kerri St. Pierri, co-captains Nancy Fillion and Julie Salmon, Kim Correllas, Lynne Gagnon 2nd row: Lori Towers, Beth Harris Tara Mcdonald, April Blankenship, Kelly Donnelly, Kerry Kelly, Julie Plunkett, Dee DeMarco, Pam Blake v. 71 1983 Volleyball 1st row: Lynn Wolstenholme, co-captains Chris Reagan and April Pereira, Jodi Lizotte 2nd row: Wendy Hunt, Jennifer Howard, Julianne Bustin, Gina DeGaetano, coach Wayne Hall, Candy Taveira MU Volleyball The volleyball team completed a very successful 1983 season, finishing second to league powerhouse Dennis-Yarmouth, with an 11-5 record. Coach Wayne Hall is proud of his team and their efforts. They advanced to the state volleyball tournament but did not have much luck after drawing into pool A; which had them competing with Case and Durfee, local volleyball powers. Cap¬ tains Christine Reagan and April Perreira led the Raiders throughout the season. Reagan and Jodi Lizotte, both juniors, were named to the SEMC DIV II allstar team and the Herald News All Stars. Lynn Wolstenholme, the only senior on the squad, completed her fourth success¬ ful season. Since there is only one mem¬ ber departing from this year’s team, next year’s edition of the volleyball team looks good and should make a strong bid for top honors in Division II. Cross Country 1983 Cross Country . . . 1983 1983 Cross Country 1st row: captains Jen Churn, Peter Furtado, Kim Megna, coach Dick Bernado 2nd row: Karen Gallant, Steve Prario, Kevin Vezina, Roger LePage, Jeff Berube, Peter Silvestre 3rd row: Karyn O’Meara, Jeff Tippins, Todd Plosker, Ken David, Tim Lockett, Jeff Commeau, Jeff Amaral 4th row: Liz Furtado, Monique Chouinard, Tim Collins, Kim McNally, Rosie O’Toole, Chris Hopkins, Nancy Gray, Richard Cunha, 5th row: Cheryl Collins, Donna Dubriel, Wendy Vezina 6th row: Todd Nicolay, Marc Baillargeon Division I Cross Country has produced statewide powers in the last two years. The likes of Falmouth, D-Y, New Bedford, Seekonk, Attleboro have put our corner of the state on the cross country map. Our own “Big Blue Machine” Blue Raider Cross Country team has been part of it. In the past two years, victories have been scarce, but they have been competitive and have come up with good performances in the Conference Meet both years. Again and again, the Big Blue Machine was put to the test. Could our invisible glue hold us together? Could our concept of “team dynamics” still prevail? Could we endure the rigors of Division I Cross Country Competition week after week? The over¬ whelming answer is yes they did. They gave the good effort; they fought the good fight. From the 99° heat at Apponequet (Sept. 19) to bitter, raw cold of New Bedford (Oct. 24) told the story of the extremes of our season. Good individ¬ ual performances at Somerset Invitational, O.L.P., State Coaches, a great girls effort at the Conference Meet (6th) were the highlights of the season. Key injuries to Roger (Spot) LePage and Cheryl (Turbo) Collins hurt our team very deeply. Jenny Churn ran in pain all season, Kevin Vezina had his annual bout with illness, Rosie O’Toole missed the bus . . . these are just examples of our hard luck. We, nonetheless, are proud of our seniors —4- year girls (6th and 7th) in our history Jennie Churn and Karen Gallant; also Kim Megna and Karyn O’Meara. Good, solid performances were turned in by Kevin Vezina and Jennie Churn, who mad “Her¬ ald News All Scholastic.” Richard Cunha, Nancy Gray, Jeff Tippins, Karen Gallant, Steve Prario, Rosie O’Toole, Peter Furtado, Kim Megna, Tim Lockett, All provided solid performances. Newcomers to our team were Jeff Berube, Moni¬ que Chouinard, Liz Furtado, Christine Hopkins. Timmy Collins, Todd Plosker, Donna Dubreuil, Kimi McNally, Wendy Zevina, Jeff Commeau. When it was all over, we realized that the concept of the “Big Blue Machine” had prevailed. mtrnF m ' ■ ' -jfr ni - ' ' - h ., . 3% ’ v •; ■ ' «Se ' , .-i S .. It was a disappointing season because the team did not improve at the rate or to the level they were capable of reaching. However, although the season was less than great, individually some players did very well. Tri-captains Shawn Park, Tony Souza and Noel Moreira were named to the Herald News All Star Soccer Team, and Goalie Shawn Park was nominated to the Boston Globe Division I All Star Team. 1983 Soccer 1st row: Dave Miranda, captains; Anthony Souza, Shawn Park, and Noel Moreira, Mike Martinho, Russell Silvia, 2nd row: Keith Miranda, Mark Medeiros, Greg Louro, Ricci DeGaetano, Ric Prario, Brian Medeiros 3rd row: coach Whit Horton, Pat Hurley, Paul Bienvenue, Scott Everman, Chris Periera, Mike Souza, Adam Friedman INDEX TO BABY PICTURES Baby Picture Key 52. The loss of 5 all¬ conference athletes due to graduation left coaches Kevin Kaylor and Richard Bernardo with a handful of seasoned vet¬ erans and a small group of promising underclassmen. Led by cocaptains Katy O’Toole and John Couture, the Raiders had some strong individual efforts, but lacked suffi¬ cient depth to be competitive in every event. Couture went undefeated in ev¬ ery dual meet in the high jump and high hurdles, yet the boy’s team had a 0-4-1 record. The girls team fared a little bet¬ ter, but still had to fight for victories, as they finished the season at 2-4. For the five seniors; Karen Gallant, Lisa Willard, Caroline Marcille, John Couture and Katy O’Toole, it was a sea¬ son for recording personal bests. For the underclassmen, it was a season to re¬ member. Although it was not a winning year, the 1984 winter track team will never forget .... Tippi’s Tacos . . . the memorable bus rides . . .
