The varsity field hockey team started out with a new coach, Sue Curt, and a new system. The season began as a good one, but as time went on, the team suffered. Virginia Laur¬ eanno, a powerful defense player, was in¬ jured and Kathy Sullivan became ill half-way through the season. Both girls were unable to finish the season. Lisa Anctil was also injured mid-way through the season in a game against Case High. However, Lisa was able to return a week later to help out her teammates. The team was held together by Miss Curt with help from her co-captains Liz White and Lisa Anctil. Lisa was a defensive player and Liz played center and wing. Being the only two weniors, Liz and Lisa expected hard work and gave the team encouragement. The high scorers, respectively, were Tracy Worton and Pam Bustin. The girls worked hard this season and had a good coach and captains, to keep their spir¬ its up. I enjoyed playing field hockey with them and wish them luck next year. CROSS-COUNTRY Never has the concept of our cross country team been as severely challenged as the season of ā82. Could we maintain our invisible glue and stick together as a team, even while we lost several dual meets? The problem was SMC Division I competition. Falmouth, Seekonk, New Bedford, and Attleboro proved to be among the top ten teams in the state. The last time the cross country team was as severely tested was in 1972. The big guns of the state of Mass were awesome. But the team did stick together. They maintained the truth of their own definition of winning- - - Hard work, fun, improvement, competition, team spirit. The season of 1982 will long be remembered as the season that proved the formula true. The team was blessed by dedicated captains- - - Julie Hynes, Peter Lopriore, Jennie Churn and Mike Nicolay- - - who believed in themselves and pulled their team up with them. Miracu¬ lous as it may seem, the team that struggled through ten dual meets had a truly great meet at Seekonk, had a marvelous Conference Meet (7th), did super at State Coaches (5 medals earned) and came through with a gritty performance at the State Class Meet (6th) that will long be remembered in the legacy of cross country. A glance at the record certainly may not impress any¬ one. But those who know will always have a warm feeling in their hearts at the thought of the Trials and Triumphs of the Season of 1982. It was an experience the Seniors will never forget. 90 j I 91 VOLLEYBALL The Somerset girlās volleyball team compiled a record of 9-1 and were tied for first place in the Division II league. This yearās team was led by co¬ captains Kathy Curry amd Marybeth Dunne. They led their team to a spot in the playoffs. Filling out the rest of the team roster are Terri Mello, Kathy Royds, Kelly Curry, Dawn Beaudry, April Periera, Christine Reagan, Lynne Wolsten- holme and Jodi Lizotte.
