One day we were just starting school, and you lived right down the street. Summer vacations lasted forever. Winters were endless days of ice-skating and sledding and hot-chocolate after dark. We watched each other’s memories grow, yet our eyes never saw past each day’s sunlight. There was no such word as good-bye, but we finally learned its meaning, and the sun faded, and our child-like eyes filled with grown-up tears. 62 Case Rally We Did It Again! Due to some hard-luck defeats, the team just missed making the playoffs. The offense was sparked by John DaCosta, the leading scorer, and John Rocha led the defense. They were both selected to the All-Scholastic team. Other Major a contributors to this year’s success were Robert Swain, Jim Velozo and Scott Rosa. Even though the team did not make it to the playoffs, the season will not be for¬ gotten because of the memorable defensive bat¬ tles against Barnstable and Dennis-Yarmouth. The team would like to thank Coach Horton for his lead¬ ership, his dedication and for the time he put in for the team. Soccer picture: front row (l-r): Scott Rosa. The overall record was 6-5-2, while in the league we were 5-32. Al¬ though our record was impressive, we ex¬ perienced the misfortune of not qualify¬ ing for state tournament play. The team was comprised of eight sen¬ iors: Sue Anctil, Kim Brogan, Lori Car¬ valho, Cheryl Geary, Mary McDonald, Beth Pereira, Tracey Thibault and Cap¬ tain Jocelyn Thibault. The seniors will be greatly missed but the underclassmen proved themselves to be very talented. Best of luck to the 1982 team. Cross- Country The seventeenth edition of the Big Blue Ma¬ chine” again achieved a measure of success on the hills and dales of the cross country courses of the Southeastern Massachusetts Division 1-West Con¬ ference. Their conference record was 6-4; overall 10-4. They were in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with Attleboro and Feehan, two teams they traded victories with. State champion Seekonk was conference champion with an unble¬ mished 10-0 slate. Team Dynamics”, the cross country equivalent of team pride”, came through in big meets. They were third in the Conference Meet, (5th overall), fifth at C.M.I., fourth in the state meet, and fared well in the State Coaches’ Meet. Controversy with the MIAA over the All State Meet forced the Mass, communites to enter club teams in the All State Invitational sanctioned by TAC. Dan Gendreau was hit early in the season with mono but recovered by the last week and showed typical courage in helping his teamates during the season. Philip Lussier smashed the South Middle School 2.5 mile record and was consistently in the top 5 of all the big meets he ran-he was named as a Boston Globe, All-Scholastic. Peter Lopriore, al¬ though in Philip’s shadow, earned a conference¬ wide reputation in his own right. Chris Pereira, Mi¬ chael Nicolay, Kevin Vezina, and Donald Walker were consistent scorers. The girls were consistently led by sophomore Jen¬ nie Churn; following her lead invariably were Nancy Picard and Julie Hynes. Injuries to Kerrie Johnson. Audrey Lussier and Beth Lizotte hurt. Elise Ironfield, Karen Gallant, Sarah O’Toole took up the slack. Nan¬ cy Newman nursed an injury late in the season. The captains were; Dan Gendreau Kathy Sapelly Philip Lussier Annemarie Pereira Nancy Picard Julie Hynes Kerrie Johnson Seniors on the squad were: Al Baskin Kathy Sapelly Annemarie Pereira Dan Gendreau Philip Lussier Nancy Picard Chris Pereira Bob Judge Mike Chmielewski Freni Row: Captains; left to right—Danny Gendreau, Kathy Sapelly, Phil Lussier, Julie Hynes, Anne¬ marie Pereira, Kerrie Johnson, Nancy Picard Second Row: Mike Chmielewski, Chris Pereira, Peter Furtado, Kevin Vezina. Volleyball The 1981 Volleyball season proved to be an exciting one. Somerset started slowly but finished strong by upsetting two different league champions. Old Rochester and pow¬ erhouse Case. Somerset was the only team to beat Case all season. Even though there were five sen¬ iors, only four players on the team had more than a year’s high school experience in volleyball. The Raid¬ ers finished 9-7 overall and placed third in league play. The team was led by Tri-captains Lynne Fillion, Mary Fingliss, and Na¬ dine Camara. Fingliss and Camara were the team’s offensive threat with Mary setting and Nadine spik¬ ing. Both players were named to the first team Southeastern Mass. It was an outstanding year for our Blue Raiders with an undefeated season of 10 and 0. After numerous hours of hard work and dedica¬ tion, the Raiders once again achieved a Super Bowl berth. Behind the leadership of co-captains James Beaulieu and Paul Duarte, the team won outstanding victories over Taunton, which had an undefeated record and Case. The offense was led by quarter-back Steve Bartsch and the produc¬ tive backfield of Paul Duarte, Rick Kowalski, and Dave Rockcliffe. Helping the backfield to move up the field was the powerful offensive line of Bull, Joe Sheppard, Ray Mac, and Roger Beauchesne. If Steve did not hand off to a back, he could count on a spectacular catch by Mike Attar, Kevin Shea, Mel Harvey or Dave Gregory. The Blue Raiders’ defensive team was awesome due to hard heads and the determination to stop big rushers like Carl Fisher of Taunton and Chris Geagon of Case. The strong defensive line backers who kept the defense together were Wayne lodice and Joe Medeiros. These two were helped tremendously by the powerhouse line of Mike Attar, Joe Fingliss, Joe Mello, John Marcille and Steve Mello. If a runner happened to get by the line, he would encounter the offensive backs: Kevin Shea, Tim Mulrooney, Dave Hathaway and Brad Lizotte. There were six players who made the Coaches’ All-League Team: Wayne lodice, Kevin Shea, Rick Kowalski, Ray McDonald. Jim Beaulieu and Steve Buckwheat’ Mello who was the key component of the Somerset High Raiders. With his skill and awesome foot, Buck won games-like D-Y, Taunton and many others. The 1981 Varsity team will not be forgotten for a long time. They set school history by achieving a perfect 10-0 season, which was last accomplished by the Class of 1958 who finished the season of 8 0. In each game every man on the field had his moment of glory, who also was part of a team striving for victory. COMMUNITY CLEANSERS. INC. SYPKO BUILDING 1049 County Street Somerset, Mass. Mary-Elizabeth McDonald Senior Class President June of 1982 has quickly arrived and soon we will be graduating from Somerset High School. Through hard work and determination, the class of 1982 has become a class quite different from all of the others. We have ac¬ complished many things that have never before been ac¬ complished. More importantly, we have grown together as a class and made many lasting friendships through our achievements. It has been an honor to work for a great class such as ours, and I am a proud member of the class of ’82. Good Luck, Mary Laurie Newton Managing Editor - 82 Raider I hope that in the years to come this book will bring back memories of the times we had and the friends we knew at Somerset High. The years have slipped by so quickly. It seems like only yesterday that we were just freshmen waiting anxiously for the day when we would graduate and be on our own. Well, we made it. That day is finally here. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the people on the staff who made this book possible. Very special thanks goes to Mrs. Talbot for all her time and effort and to Mr. LaMothe for his hard work and dedication. Good luck to all and best wishes for happiness and success in the future.
