It was a year of memorable victories and heart-wrenching defeats. It was a year in which the injury list grew to almost the size of the roster. The team worked hard to claim a tie with Attleboro as Division One-west champions, only to be denied a playoff berth due to an unknown rule change. No matter how it ended, no one will forget the season of ’80. Steve White’s three goal performance against Attleboro, the come from behind tie against Taunton, the defensive battles with New Bedford and the rain in Barnstable all will be remem¬ bered. The team would like to thank the Mantis, the Moth, and the Bee for laughs; tri- captains Steve White, Shortie Bamford, and Bill Terry for leadership; and Coach Whit Horton for everything. ' The 1980 girls’s field hockey team, under the strong lead¬ ership of senior captain Lisa Thibault, completed a success¬ ful season of 8-3-3. Although the team did not make it to the state finals, they still finished very strongly in their division. The team will graduate eight seniors who will be sorely missed. These girls are Lisa Thibault, Cathy Phillips, Patty Mullins, Anne Hussey, Sue Thibault, Sherri Hanatow, Mary Lib Barrar, and Martha Ward. The entire varsity squad should be congratulated for their spirit of competitiveness and desire to win. The junior varsity team also completed a successful season. All of the girls on this team will certainly contribute to fut ure varsity teams. The young “Big Blue Machine” was ably led by junior captains Dan Gendreau, Kathy Sapelly, anf Nancy Picard. On the boy’s team significant contributions were turned in by Phil Lussier, Peter Lapriore, Alan Baskin, Mike Lockett, and Chris Pereira. A strong field of runners competed for the girls. Among them we re Sue Rowe, a first year runner and the only senior on the team, Nancy Picard, Elise Ironfield, Jenny Churn, Beth Lizotte, Annmari Periera, and Carla Nicolay. Conference team to be invited to a post-season Superbowl berth in Division III. The Blue Raid¬ ers had to fight a court challenge with Canton High School over the Massachusetts Interscho¬ lastic Athletic Association’s rule that picked the third ranked team over the second place squad. Canton had already met number one seeded Sil¬ ver Lake and it is contrary to association rules for two teams which have already met to play again in the Superbowl. Somerset won in the court but lost on Boston University’s Nickerson Field, 21-3. Steve Mello kicked a second quarter field goal and the Raiders had a three point lead at the half. Somerset’s defense, the “Blue Crunch Bunch”, dominated the powerful Lakers. Silver Lake, the undefeated Old Colony League Champions, turned the game around in the sec¬ ond half and took advantage of Raider errors to score three unanswered touchdowns. The Superbowl was Somerset’s first chance at a football championship since the 1958 captured the title. 117 Joyce Diskin, Maryanne Swidey, Caroline Briere, Kelly Valton, Anne Lewis, Carla Brisbois missing from the photo are CHEERLEADERS Front Row: Pattie O’Neill, Head Caroline Corrigan, Nikki Panowski Middle Row: Manager Vicki Kyriakakis, Cheryl Re- zendes, Pam Cabral, Lisa Senechal, Cathy Joncas, Yvette Mulero, Advisor Marcia Salmon Back Row: Lynne Senchal, Sherri Caron, Sandra Paiva, Karen Venturini ... •- i m- Front Row: Christine Cotter, Christine Capone, Debbie Sylvia, Lisa Caisse, Donna Dahlstrom, Lori Chadkowski Back Row: Tammi Flemming and Anne Carvalho 118 n Front Row: Carlin Phillips, Dave Cadorette, Steve Attar, Pete McNally Second Row: Tom Cabral, Dan Gendreau, Chuck Walker, Chris Mendes, Ray McDonald; Kevin Higgins, Ed Keyes, Coach Ray McDonald Missing: Mike Attar BASKETBALL Rear 1 to r: Trainer Nancy Souza, Sue Kozak, Tracey Worton, Mary Fingliss, Pam Brabant, Terri Mello, Kathy Knapp, Coach Nancy Paulus Front 1 to r: Carey Newton, Nadine Camara, Lisa Tessier, Sherri Hanatow, Lori Van Brunt Debbie Kelly - GIRLS’ BASKETBALL -— 12 123 Top: Co- Captain Jane Cote, Kim DePoala, Co- Captain Patty Mullins Middle: Lynne Cote, Jennifer Jaryna Bottom: Beth-Ann Calis, Lisa DePoala, Michelle Arruda, Tish Donahue, Bridget Rebello ' GYMNASTICS For the past three years, Somerset High School has fielded the most outstanding girls’ gymnastics team in New England. The Raiderettes, un¬ der the guidance of Coach Bill Bar- nicoat have captured three consecu¬ tive state and south sectional cham¬ pionships and have a winning streak that dates back seven years. The 1980-81 season was expected to be a continuation of past excel¬ lence. The Boston Globe made the Somerset girls the pre-season favor¬ ites to win their fourth straight title. Halfway through their season, the girls seemed well on their way to re¬ maining on top. For the first time the team has co-captains: Jane Cote and Patty Mullins. Neither has ex¬ perienced a loss or less than state championship performance since their freshman season. As a junior. Jane was an all-state selection. Oth¬ er outstanding performers were: Lynne Cote, Kim DePaola, Michelle Arruda, Lisa DePaola, Tish Dona¬ hue, Jennifer Jaryna, Beth Anne Ca¬ lis and Bridget Rebello. The team’s base is still the underclassmen, so Somerset’s dominance of the sport should continue for years to come. 124 125 WINTER TRACK t 126 126 Dave Paquette, Rick Rego, Ray Benoit, captain Scott Geary, Bob Silvia, Mike Richarson, Ted Medeiros, Mike Rodriques, Tom Aldrich; Second Row: Ken Sullivan, Gregg Laureanno, Tony Almeida, Paul Marcellus, Jeff Colbert, Dave Cuttle, Chuck Borge, Dave Hathaway, coach Souza ICE HOCKEY The Blue Raiders were expected to have a rebuilding year in ice hockey, but it did not start out that way. After defeating Bridgewater-Raynham and North Attleboro in pre-season scim- mages, Coach Bob Souza’s Raiders only lost once in their next nine games. Somerset plays in the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference Division 1 and is always copmpetitive with state powers Fal¬ mouth and Barnstable. The past two seasons, the Cape schools have won the Eastern Mass, and state Division II champion¬ ships. The Raiders have defeated and tied these teams during that time. Captain Scott Geary returned for his final season in the cage. Scott was a three time selection to the Spectator’s all-scholastic team, and he was twice picked by the Fall River Herald News all-star team. Defensemen Dave Cuttle and Jeff Colbert contin¬ ued to skate regular shifts and kept enemy attackers away from in front of the crease. Up front, Coach Souza had Kenny Sullivan, Paul Marcellus and Chuck Borge. Sullivan was second in the league in scoring dur¬ ing his junior year and Paul Marcellus was the early pacesetter in 1981. Borge was an outstanding defensive forward who also played with the blueline corps. These six seniors provided the leadership for a talented group of underclassmen who hope to keep Somerset as the top ice 129 hockey school in Bristol County. As we leave SHS, we leave with a great sense of accomplishment. I’d like to wish everyone the best of luck after we graduate. I have really enjoyed working for the class. I am very proud to say I am a member of the Somerset High School Class of ’81. rvipurtKo- MARTHA GLADUE SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT STEPHEN MICK - MANAGING EDITOR A year is a year is a year (with apologies to Ms. Stein), but this one was a little special. Ronald Reagan became the fortieth president, 52 american hostages came home, and the world mourned the death of John Lennon. In our own little corner of the globe some big things happened too: the band went to Florida, the gymnastics team had its usual superb season, the football team went to the Super Bowl, while Proposition 2 V 2 threatened to take most of it away; and of course, the class of ’81 graduated. In remembering all the great things we’ve done during our four years here, I can’t help but remember all the people who have helped us along the way. That is why this book is dedicated to all the people at Somerset High; because without them, none of those great things would have been possible. With that in mind, I’d like to take a moment to thank all the people who’ve helped to make this book a success: all the staff, from Martha and Mike to juniors Laurie Newton and Mary McDonald; special contributors like Joe, Norval, Doug Chapman, Ted Parada, Mrs. Talbot, Diane Lebel (our artist) and Colin Brearley (who donated the final photo); and to everyone who bought a book, after all, it’s yours. My special thanks to Mr. LaMothe, without whom nothing would ever get done. Best of luck to everyone, , mm 1rs,?4.- Vt Vv “; • ? s4i ii ' • ■ ' ■ - i saas® ,- fv -5 ' f £■ ' . 33 . 5 -v. ■ : v ; : , a® . :i; ,.. ' ' ? ' .. faS ftii - BB £ r r j vi %- “. . .
